Background[]

At first glance, young Zatanna Zatara may appear to be nothing more than a simple young street magician. But underneath that hat and cape lies one of the most proficient magic-wielders in all of comic books. Born to the legendary magician Giovanni “John” Zatara, Zatanna had little idea about her magic potential, instead spending her time as a street performer.

Zatanna became a very skilled performer, but she one day came home to find her father Zatara missing, setting off her adventure to find him. Throughout her journey, she met heroes like the Atom and Green Lantern, before she finally located Zatara in Kharma, trapped by a spell cast by the evil Allura.

Following her successful endeavor, Zatanna returned to the magician biz, also meeting other heroes during this time. She began assisting the Justice League from time to time with their battles and conflicts, and became a full-fledged member after successfully rescuing Hal Jordan on a mission.

Zatanna’s arsenal is uniquely suited around the usage of magic and enchantments, giving her a unique advantage for League missions against opponents with similar supernatural powers and abilities. She notably became a good ally of Batman himself, sometimes assisting him in his own battles. However, she did notably struggle at one point with a bad habit of wiping the memories of her targets or those she feels know too much, which has created problems for her in the past.

However, Zatanna would ultimately succeed in overcoming the problems she caused and set herself right, being able to continue with her heroics. She continued to get stronger and more skilled, and is now seen as one of the most powerful members of the Justice League, if not its greatest member. Enemies of the Justice League beware, for if the League feels the need, you might find yourself facing Zatanna Zatara, Mistress of Magic.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Magic: Zatanna is one of the most powerful magicians in the world, having a mastery over both mystical and cosmic forces and able to manipulate reality. Although she usually performs her enchantments verbally, she is able to cast her spells by other means. She is powerful enough to be considered a "Sorceress Supreme".
    • Magical Awareness
    • Logomancy: Zatanna is able to speak her spells backwards to initiate a supernatural effect.
      • Black Magic: During her tutelage with Nick Necro, she along with John Constantine was taught black magic by the renown mage, a form of magic known for having a high cost to it's practitioners. When she was a child, Zatanna use her dark magic to resurrect a dead rabbit. Although this would have caused her a great pain if her father had not redirected the pain to himself.
      • Atmokinesis: Zatanna is able to utilize her backwards spells to manipulate the weather. She once changed rain into falling petals and changed the day cycle in Gotham from night to day, which she completely undid shortly afterwards.
        • Electro-Blast: Zatanna can use her magic to fire bolts of electricity out of her hands, usually by uttering something like "sdnah fo gninthgil".
      • Disintegration: Zatanna can use her magic to completely disintegrate objects. She was able to make a Batwing suit disintegrate by saying "edolpxe".
      • Elemental Control: Zatanna can manipulate magical elements such as:
        • Pyrokinesis: Generate heat and manipulate magical fire.
        • Cryokinesis: Generate cold and manipulate magical ice crystals.
        • Electrokinesis: Generate electricity and manipulate magical lightning.
        • Hydrokinesis: Generate and manipulate magical water.
        • Geokinesis: Generate and manipulate magical rocks.
        • Aerokinesis: Generate and manipulate magical wind.
        • Chronokinesis: Zatanna can move time forwards or backwards or even stops time in demand.
        • Photokinesis: Generate and manipulate magic lights.
        • Umbrakinesis: Generate and manipulate magic shadows.
      • Flight: Zatanna is able to walk on air, levitate or even fly. She can also give others the ability to do so, such as when she gave Batman the ability to walk on air
      • Force Field: Zatanna can create magical shields to withstand bullets, blasts, blows and explosions. The greater the size or density of the shield the more effort it takes Zatanna to hold.
      • Gravikinesis: Zatanna can control the gravitational pull of objects using her backwards spells. An example of this is when she uttered "teg yvaeh" on the robot Ascalon to make him fall through a floor. She can also decrease gravity in an area, allowing everybody within a certain vicinity of the spell to float upwards.
      • Healing: Zatanna can completely heal a person of their physical injuries. An example of this is when she healed Batwoman after a traumatic fight with Azrael by simply saying "laeh".
      • Invisibility: Zatanna is able to turn herself and others completely invisible by uttering something like "nrut elbisivni".
      • Molecular Reconstruction: Zatanna can use her backwards magic to alter the molecular structure of objects. An example of this is when she said "tius pu", transforming Bruce Wayne's tuxedo into a fully functioning Batsuit.
      • Telekinesis: Using her backwards magic Zatanna is able to move objects with simply gestures, such as when she tied cables around Batman's legs by saying "Dnib sih teef". She has also burst pipes and created a telekinetic umbrella against the rain using her mind.
      • Teleportation: Zatanna is able to use her backwards magic to teleport herself to anywhere on the globe. She can also teleport others alongside herself, such as when she teleported herself and Batman to her hotel room in Gotham.
      • Telepathy: Zatanna can also read minds, view and erase memories of others with or without the person's consent.
      • Phasing: Zatanna can make herself into her "phantom form" and become intangible.
      • Size Alteration: Zatanna can increase or decrease her size or the size of others to any conceivable size.
      • Deflection: Zatanna can return energy projections sent to her back to their source without loss of momentum or power.
      • Antipathy: Zatanna can reverse physical trauma so all damage that comes to her will hit her target instead.
      • Eldritch Blast: Zatanna can blast enemies with mystical energy.
      • Energy Construct Creation: Zatanna can use her magical energies to create inanimate objects such as traps or devices to suit her needs.
      • Energy Transference: Zatanna once forced a "nightmare" demon into the dreams of hundreds of people to split him apart then locked him away in her hat.
      • Transformation: Zatanna can turn anything into anything else, essentially. For instance, she has turned bullets into paper airplanes as well changing her clothes instantly. Most often she changes violent objects into harmless things.
      • Dimensional Travel: Zatanna can travels through dimensions through portals she opened with magic.
      • Reality Alteration: She can manipulate reality at will to inflicts confusions and mental trauma on her target.
  • Hypnosis: Zatanna can hypnotize anyone and command them to do anything she pleases.
  • Astral Projection: Zatanna's consciousness can leave her physical body and travel to other planes of existence.
  • Occultism: Zatanna is an expert magician with knowledge of innumerable spells and was taught by notable magicians Zatara and Nick Necro.
  • Driving: Zatanna has shown herself capable of driving a motorcycle.
  • Escapology: In preparation for her role as a stage magician, Zatanna was taught how to escape from precarious situations without using magic. By the time she was in kindergarten Zatanna could already escape from a straitjacket while underwater.
  • Meditation: Zantanna's father taught her a dozen meditation techniques by the time she was 6 years old: Buddhist, Tibetan, Kabbalistic, and Kundalini to name a few.
  • Lock Picking: Zatanna was taught how to pick locks by her father.
  • Prestidigitation: Zatanna is a greatly skilled magician and an expert illusionist, therefore performing extraordinary (real)tricks and incredible illusions on stage is super simple to her.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Zatanna has received extensive training from her time with the Justice League and from her father who always told her to rely on her wits as well as her fists should her magic fail.
  • Multilingualism: Able to speak English and many other languages and her signature "Backwards Speech". She also speaks some Spanish.

  • Magic Wand: Usually, she is often seen with a magic wand, although whether it is a stage prop or an actual focus for her power remains unknown. She does not need it though, considering her recent appearances without one and being able to cast spells effectively.
  • Magician's Hat: She can project energies/objects out from her hat or even take out any equipment she needs. The hat can also be used as a portal or a dungeon to capture and trap her target in it for as long as she wants. It is also unknown if its just a stage prop or a focus for her power. And just like her wand, she does not need it in order to use her magical powers.

  • Comparable to Superman, who can keep up with members of The Flash Family, keep in mind that Wally West, even in his early career as a member of the Flash Family, could reach speeds that we're impossible to calculate.
  • Comparable to Wonder Woman, who deflected trillions of particles of the Shattered God, which can travel the entire universe in a short amount of time.

  • Logomancy's Speech Dependency: Zatanna cannot initiate a spell with her backwards-related magic without speaking it's contents, if gagged or deprived of her ability to speak she cannot cast a spell. However, she can circumvent such a weakness by initiating a spell by other means.
  • Mnemonic Incantation: Zatanna casts her spells by saying the words of her incantations backwards. Mnemonic incantation is the most complicated of the mystic arts. On one occasion, the assassin Deathstroke delivered a direct blow to her liver, initiating a regurgitation reaction. On a separate occasion, The Joker (disguised as the stage magician Loxias) shot Zatanna in the neck, rendering her magic useless. She must be able to speak or read backwards in order for her to focus her spells.
  • Vulnerability to Magic: Powerful enchantments against beings of magic, like gods, are able to restrict her as well, preventing her from accessing enchanted places or dispel the adverse charm. Harmful magical realms such as Hell can also hinder how often she can speak her spells and can cause her great physical damage.
  • Pupaphobia: Zatanna used to have an intense fear of puppets rooted from a traumatic event in her childhood. Mere sight of a puppet could cause her to become nauseous or make her lose her focus. She seems to have overcome this phobia after a therapy session.
