~ Vergil to Dante

Background[]

Millennia ago, war was waged between humanity and demons from the Underworld. The Demon King Mundus had his sights set on conquest, intending to subjugate the human realm to his rule. With his massive army capable of wiping out almost any being who dared oppose him, his downfall came at the hands of one of his own kind; the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda rebelled against the demons to prevent mankind from suffering under Mundus’ tyranny. With the use of his sword, his blood and a mystic amulet, he managed to seal away the entrance to the Underworld through the unholy tower called the Temen-ni-gru, at the cost of the greater portion of his power.

After benevolently ruling over mankind, Sparda vanished and descended into legend before passing away, but not before marrying a human woman named Eva. Their union would lead to the birth of half-human, half-demonic twins named Dante and Vergil, who were each entrusted with weapons and halves of Sparda’s amulet. Eva cared for their children as a single mother, but their happiness would end when the twins turned 8 years old. Mundus’ forces had caught wind of Sparda’s death and attacked the family, leaving the brothers as orphans and separating their paths for the next several years.

Distraught over this traumatic incident, Vergil began to believe that his human side was the source of his weakness, and embraced his demonic heritage. He travelled the world to find whatever remained of Sparda’s power, and soon learned of the Temen-ni-gru’s legend by way of a mysterious individual named Arkham, who explained that it can only be restored by one who bears Sparda’s blood and possessed the same artifacts used to seal it in the first place. Later on, Vergil learned of Dante’s survival and existence as a demon hunter, leading to the sons of Sparda eventually battling each other and clashing both their blades and philosophies together.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Strength: Due to his demonic heritage, Vergil has inhuman amounts of physical strength. So much so that he incorporates strikes with Yamato's sheath in combat and can throw it with enough force to pierce a scarecrow. Vergil is also strong enough to palm strike Rebellion through Arkham powered by the Sword of Sparda. He can effortlessly overpower much larger demons. Indeed, Vergil was even able to overpower Dante in a sword lock when Dante was not at his full awakened state easily and could match him after he had gotten considerably more powerful in his own right. After his time as Urizen and accepting his human side, Vergil has come to be Dante's match once again, constantly parrying his sword swings and holding Dante's blade back. Even after being drastically weakened, he was able to rip off Nero's Devil Bringer with ease.
  • Superhuman Speed: When wielding Yamato, combined with his prodigious swordsmanship, Vergil can cut and slash at speeds faster than the eye can see. He is quick enough to draw multiple slashes in one draw, to stop raindrops from hitting the ground in a heavy downpour, and swings Yamato fast enough that he can catch bullets and even launch them. Vergil is easily capable of outpacing Dante in his suppressed state and keeping up with him in all their subsequent fights.
  • Superhuman Agility: Vergil can perform jumps much higher than a normal human and perform a variety of flips and spins while doing so.
  • Superhuman Durability: Vergil is capable of taking brute force attacks without showing signs of damage.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Despite taking a large amount of damage and large amounts of physical strain, Vergil is shown to be able to continue fighting and only needs a few moments of rest to move about again without strain. By Devil May Cry 5 Vergil's stamina is great enough to the point he was able to fight Dante continuously for weeks while they were trapped in the Demon World.
  • Accelerated Healing: Due to his demonic heritage, Vergil can heal instantly as soon as whatever is injuring him has been removed from his body. It is strong enough that he came out unscathed from a strike from Rebellion that would have otherwise bisected him. This healing factor is extremely strong; even when Vergil is physically exhausted, his healing powers work at almost full strength. After his return to the human world, Vergil's body was breaking down due to unknown causes.
  • Demonic Power Manipulation: Vergil is able to imbue his demonic power into objects to augment them. He mostly uses his demonic power to create weapons that can be used for various purposes. Since reuniting his human and demon halves, Vergil is able to create a doppelganger of himself to aid him in the battle against his opponent.
  • Teleportation: Vergil has advanced teleportation abilities that he uses to strategically reposition himself around the battlefield. He is noted to be more skilled with teleportation than Dante, as he uses it far more frequently and sometimes with the aid of Yamato.
  • Force Field Generation: Vergil can project a purple, spherical shield, made of demonic energy, around his body, whilst preparing his Devil Trigger. Although it only seems to last for a few seconds, the shield is strong enough to protect him from every manner of attack. The shield can also generate a repulsion field that prevents enemies from getting close. Vergil can control this repulsion field, disabling it when conjuring a set of Spiral Swords, which will harm nearby enemies.
  • Devil Trigger: Vergil can unleash his demonic side to significantly enhance all of his powers and abilities. When he jumps during this state, wings sprout out, however he cannot glide or fly with them..
  • Sin Devil Trigger: In Devil May Cry 5, Vergil obtains Sin Devil Trigger, it allows him to fly with new wings while retaining his regeneration ability and further enhancing his power.
  • Doppelganger: In Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Vergil can create a phantom doppelganger of himself.
  • World of V: In Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Vergil can use Yamato to summon V & the Familiars for a short time.
  • Weapons Proficiency: Much like Dante, Vergil can quickly grasp the fundamentals of whatever weapon he picks up. He showed immense skill with Beowulf and Force Edge shortly after obtaining them.
  • Swordsmanship: Vergil is a dangerous master swordsman wielding the Yamato with unrivaled precision and versatility; his technique is based on Iaijutsu, a style of samurai swordsmanship which involves quick, precise draws from the sheathe, striking the opponent, and removing blood from the sword before resheathing. His Iaijutsu is made more powerful by incorporating his own demonic powers, developing a personalized style called the Dark Slayer. When Yamato is still unsheathed, Vergil also often uses the scabbard itself as a weapon, using it for blunt strikes, or to block an enemy's attack. Due to this style, Vergil commonly wields Yamato with one hand, holding the scabbard with the other. However, when necessary he sometimes puts the scabbard away and uses both hands with Yamato. In Devil Trigger, the scabbard becomes a part of his left hand and can adjust the position at will, allowing him to freely wield the blade with both hands while still performing his iaijutsu techniques. After obtaining Force Edge, Vergil was immediately able to fight in a style almost identical to Dante's. During his short time using Rebellion, he shows competent use of it. His overall skill in swordsmanship is shown to be great enough to easily rival his brother, and even at times overpower him. On lesser foes, the speed, precision, and discipline bestowed to him allows him to outpace and utterly them cut down as if akin to an artform; with great concentration in only splits of a second and issuing a number of blows at his discretion, one of Vergil's signature traits is to time his victim's demise, and sheathe in sync with the damage done, resulting in a display of destruction that slays the opposition before they could even realize it.
  • Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Though Vergil has never been shown in unarmed combat, he has shown excellent hand-to-hand combat with Beowulf. He uses a variety of punches and roundhouse kicks.
  • Mirage Blades: Spectral swords created by Vergil's demonic power. He usually fires one at a time, but by expending Devil Trigger, he can summon multiple swords that he can arrange in various formations such as a shield that rotates around him or to float behind him until he decides to launch them all rapid-fire.
  • Master Marksmanship: Despite Vergil's dislike of firearms, he is still able to fire his Mirage Blades with great precision.

Equipment[]

  • Yamato: A katana once wielded by Sparda to seal the true Hell Gate, it became Vergil’s signature weapon after it was passed on to him as a heirloom. The sword is imbued with dark magic, allowing it to cut through almost anything. Its signature move, the Judgement Cut, demonstrates this by having Vergil cut through the fabric of reality itself. Outside of it, Vergil practices a form of Iaido in direct combat, sheathing the sword when not in use and pulling it out for quick blitzing attacks.
    • Upper Slash: An upwards strike which launches enemies and allows Vergil to follow up with an aerial combo.
    • Rapid Slash: A dashing attack which hits multiple times. This can be follow-up with a launcher called Rising Star.
    • Judgement Cut: A fast slash attack which tears open a hole in space which shreds captured opponents to pieces.
    • Judgement Cut End: Vergil creates an area of slowed time around himself and his enemy, then performs numerous rapid slashes covering the whole area leaving no chance to dodge or escape.
    • Dimension Slash: Vergil dashes around the battlefield in quick succession, performing multiple Judgement Cuts in the process. This attack is also known as Judgement Cut End.
  • Beowulf: A pair of flash gauntlets and greaves which Vergil uses for different martial arts techniques. This Devil Arm contains the soul of the Lightbeast Beowulf, one of the guardians of the Temen-ni-gru.  After being weakened in battle against Dante, he attacked Vergil and was slain; his soul being reforged into a new weapon. Said to be blessed by the power of the sacred light, attacks with Beowulf emit large bursts of energy which compliment its hard-hitting strikes. Vergil can charge it up further to increase their attack potency.
    • Starfall: A dive kick from mid-air.
    • Lunar Phase: Vergil launches himself into the air and performs a rotating windmill kick that juggles foes and sends them crashing downwards.
    • Rising Sun: A quick combo that sends Vergil and his opponent upwards.
    • Beast Uppercut: A powerful uppercut that launches foes into the air. This can be charged further into two more attacks: at half charge, it becomes the more powerful Rising Dragon, while a full charge yields the two-hit Dragon Breaker.
    • Kick 13: A barrage of kicks that finishes with a launcher.
  • Force Edge: For a short time, Vergil wielded the dormant form of the sword of Sparda. This has become a staple weapon of Vergil's gameplay, as it was later replaced with Mirage Edge in Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition.
  • Mirage Edge: A solidified spectral copy of the unawakened form of the sword once wielded by the Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda. The Force Edge contained the remnants of his power after it was used to seal the Temen-ni-gru’s gateway to Hell. Its true form can only be reawakened with the aid of the Perfect Amulet, which was split into two halves and given to Dante and Vergil as keepsakes. With Mirage Edge, Vergil can perform his own versions of Dante’s signature attacks, such as High Time, Helm Breaker and Stinger. He can also dual-wield it alongside the Yamato for certain combination attacks.
    • Helm Breaker: A powerful overhead slash.
    • Stinger: A dashing thrust that can send foes flying backwards. This can be followed with Million Stab, where Vergil repeatedly pierces the target before finishing with one more thrust. Unlike Dante, Vergil can perform this move in mid-air at the cost of reduced knockback.
    • High Time: A launcher attack meant to be followed-up with aerial combos.
    • Round Trip: Vergil tosses the Force Edge like a boomerang, sucking enemies into a vortex where they are skewered repeatedly.
    • Drive: A wave of energy fired from the Force Edge. Can be followed with a second projectile as Overdrive.
  • Summoned Swords: These spectral copies of Force Edge are Vergil’s primary form of ranged attack, due to his distaste towards firearms. Vergil can fire these during his combos, and warp towards any foe or surface these land on with Trick. He can also detonate blades embedded into enemies for extra damage.
    • Spiral Swords: A group of Summoned Swords surround Vergil in a circle formation, damaging nearby foes and defending him from ranged attacks.
    • Sword Storm: Swords form around a target, and proceed to impale it after a brief pause.
    • Blistering Swords: Swords are formed behind Vergil, which he can fire one at a time. Heavy
    • Rain Swords: Vergil summons multiple swords to fall on a target, stunning them momentarily. Slows the target temporarily.

Alternate Forms[]

Devil Trigger[]

When Vergil gets serious, he awakens the demon half of himself, allowing it to take over his body and assume his true devil form. This is known as the Devil Trigger, a latent ability that demons and demonic hybrids can tap into for an extra boost of power. Under its effects, Vergil’s speed and power are boosted tremendously, and his innate healing factor allows him to regenerate from serious wounds quicker. Many of his moves are also enhanced when performed in this state, such as Summoned Swords being fired at the end of Yamato combos or extra kicks while performing Lunar Phase.

  • Dark Angel: He repeatedly slashes his opponent while placing Summoned Swords all around them which are launched when he finishes his assault.

Corrupted Vergil/Nelo Angelo[]

After being corrupted by Mundus, Vergil receives new enhancements to his original powers, though his techniques have less diversity than before. In addition to his vast supernatural strength, he can now fire concentrated demonic energies from his fists (though he can still use Summoned Swords), and he wields a strange black zweihänder with ease. Nelo Angelo is capable of using his own, much stronger, versions of some of Dante's attacks, making him a force to be reckoned with in Devil May Cry. However, he does not use his Summoned Swords until his final battle with Dante, though he can use them in different formations and in much greater numbers. Nelo Angelo is also capable of imbuing his gauntlets and greaves with his demonic power, manifesting as blue flames and electricity. This can be seen in the cutscene after his first fight with Dante. He has gotten considerably more powerful, as he is capable of overpowering and nearly killing Dante in combat despite Dante having gotten even stronger since his defeat of Vergil, only prevented from finishing off Dante due to Vergil's old memories resurfacing and causing him pain after seeing Dante's half of the Perfect Amulet, and later posing a difficult challenge as Dante grows further in strength.

  • Superhuman Strength, Speed, and Endurance: Nelo Angelo is capable of fighting Dante as a near equal, and even defeated him during their first encounter.
  • Superhuman Agility: Despite being covered head to toe in armor, Nelo Angelo is capable of jumping and flipping through the air with no hindrance.
  • Demonic Power Manipulation: Nelo Angelo's energy manifest as a blue flame occasionally accompanied by blue electricity. He can coat his sword, hands, and feet in his energy to augment his attacks. By concentrating his energy into his hand, he can launch a fireball or manifest Summoned Swords.
  • Teleportation: Nelo Angelo can teleport in a puff of blue flame. He also once teleported in a burst of lightning.
  • Swordsmanship: As Nelo Angelo, Vergil remains an exceptional swordsman, capable of nearly matching Dante on equal footing.
  • Hand-To-Hand Combat: Nelo Angelo was capable of disarming Dante and quickly gaining the upper hand and defeating him in unarmed combat during their first encounter.
  • Summoned Swords: Spectral swords created by Nelo Angelo's demonic power and used as projectiles or to orbit around himself as a shield. He is also able to teleport them around an opponent in various formations where they typically rotate around the target before attacking.
  • Devil Trigger-like State: Nelo Angelo enters an empowered state where his helmet is removed and he becomes significantly taller and stronger.
  • Greatsword: Nelo Angelo's signature black and silver sword.

Urizen[]

Upon stabbing himself with Yamato, Vergil split into his human half, V, who is able to summon his familiars, but needs to absorb demonic energy to stay alive, and Vergil's demon half, and the embodiment of Vergil's desire for power, Urizen. At first, Urizen may be bound to his throne within the Qliphoth Tree, but he's still very powerful, even if restricted to his throne. Urizen was powerful enough to beat Lady and Trish, and then used them as energy sources for powerful demons, and Urizen's also able to overpower Dante and Nero. Urizen can protect himself and/or push others away with waves of force, rain down energy blasts, cause bursts of blue fire to erupt from the ground, sweep the area with a powerful laser, fire energy orbs that create energy domes that slow down time within them, and fire large plasma spheres. Urizen can also control the roots of the Qliphoth Tree, and the roots on his armor. Urizen's protected by a crystal barrier that is in place of Yamato. The crystal can't be broken by attacks weaker than it, but it can be knocked away. When Urizen detached himself from his throne after Nero successfully managed to land a cut on Urizen's hand, Urizen became more mobile. He can sweep his enemies with his arm, and can smash his hand into the ground, while stabbing the ground with his roots. When Urizen finally consumed the Qliphoth Fruit, he achieved near-limitless power and shed his root-covered armor, revealing his awesome-looking true form. In his true form, Urizen still has all of his energy-based attacks, but now he has some skill in hand-to-hand combat, such as a downward punch, a high kick, and an uppercut. Urizen's now able to create Summoned Swords, run at amazing speeds, and create portals to travel through. But however, Urizen's weaker than Sin Devil Trigger Dante, who's able to break Urizen's crystal barrier, and heavily damage Urizen.

Sin Devil Trigger[]

The ultimate form of Devil Trigger, and the peak of Vergil's power. Vergil attained this form after eating the fruit of the Qliphoth tree as Urizen, and reforming his true self from Urizen and V. Sin Devil Trigger is a massively upgraded version of Devil Trigger, which transforms Vergil into a winged, reptilian demon and greatly enhances all of his abilities. This form grants Vergil an incredible amount of power, enough that he's said to be even stronger than his father, Sparda. It also allows him to form a copy of himself out of demonic energy to fight alongside him, and even fly with the wings on his back.

Feats[]

Strength[]

  • Impaled Arkham with Rebellion by hitting the sword with a palm strike.
  • Effortlessly overpowers much larger demons.
  • Held a tired Dante's sword back with one arm.
  • As Urizen, knocked out Dante and shattered Rebellion, both with a single punch.
  • As Urizen, swatted Dante very far away from him.

    • The Qliphoth tree bore fruit that condensed all the blood within it, which had the blood to begin with, so it’s possible this feat is even higher than this.
    • Also, the Qliphoth tree spread out through the whole Earth according to the DMC5 artbook. Again, would possibly make the feat even higher.
  • As Urizen, clashing with Dante shook the Earth (1 Teraton of TNT)
  • Sent DT Dante flying with ease, putting him into a 1 month coma as well.
  • Cut the Qliphoth tree with Dante’s help (8 Megatons of TNT for each of them)
    • Vergil clearly states he could have done this on his own and Dante’s just there to keep an eye on him, so he should be capable of the 16 Megaton feat by himself.
  • In Sin DT, he can fly and smash through the Qliphoth tree’s stone structure with ease.

Speed[]

  • Frequently moves faster than the eye can track.
  • Swung his sword fast enough to slice apart falling raindrops and stop them from hitting the ground.

  • Easily caught Dante’s bullets by spinning Yamato and fired them back at him
  • Dodged gunfire and caught a bullet with his sword, cutting into 6 pieces
  • Blitzed a weakened Dante after becoming whole again
  • While busy fighting Dante, reacted to Lady’s rocket launcher, cutting the rocket into pieces
  • Judgement Cut End is so fast, it looks like Vergil’s appearing in multiple places at once
  • As V, was able to react and keep up with Elder Geryon, a demonic horse able to slow down time

Durability[]

  • His healing factor has allowed him to regenerate instantly from being sliced through his upper body.
  • Easily recovers from getting stabbed through the chest with his own sword.
  • Able to survive Nero throwing Yamato back at him, the same katana that can cut through dimensions and space-time
  • Took hits from Dante all the time during their bouts
  • As Urizen, he survived Dante stabbing him through his eyeball…thing on his chest
  • Was able to just walk through Dante’s bullets as they bounce off him
  • Able to fight with Dante for over a month long and counting as well as fight as other demons that try to interrupt them (though it is possible they took breaks during this)

Skill[]

  • Killed Beowulf the Lightbeast and took his power as a Devil Arm
  • Escaped Arkham's demonic illusion
  • Defeated Arkham (who had Sparda’s corrupted power) alongside Dante.
  • Sliced hundreds and thousands of raindrops during his first battle against Dante, enough to temporarily create an empty dome during the middle of a rainstorm.
  • Nearly overpowered Dante in their first battle after becoming Nelo Angelo.
  • Defeated Agnus.
  • Equal to Dante in combat, even when both are using Sin Devil Trigger.
  • Defeated groups of demons with ease all the time
  • Defeated Dante several times and matched him as his best at the end of DMC5. He says they’re ‘even’ at the end of the game.
  • Eventually finally made peace with his twin brother and on much better terms with him
  • As V, defeated Elder Geryon Knight, Nidhogg, Proto Angelo & Scudo Angelo
  • As Urizen, defeated Dante pre-Sin DT unlocked, Trish, Lady, and Nero twice
  • Grew the Qliphoth tree, killing many humans, draining them of their blood to grow the Qliphoth fruit, which he ate to gain the power of the Kings of the Underworld like Mundus

Weaknesses[]

  • Arrogance: He has a tendency to underestimate his opponents, and is highly overconfident in his own abilities.
  • PTSD: He also has a bit of PTSD towards his rough past, as seeing any sort of reminder or figment of those times will significantly harm him mentally.
  • Honorable: Vergil adheres tightly to his code of honor, never breaking it even when in death. He holds what he feels as the rightful way of battle in high regard, much higher than his brother Dante.
  • Limited Healing Factor: Though he has been able to survive being stabbed and cut in half, things like limbs and his head seem unable to regenerate.
  • Energy Limit: His Devil Trigger is also limited by his amount of demonic energy, which depletes as Vergil fights, forcing him to run on a time limit when in this mode. This demonic energy limit also applies to his powers, though not on a time limit. Instead it depletes as he takes damage, needing him to be incredibly careful in battles.
  • Yamato Cutting Limit: Yamato’s ability to cut through anything is also seemingly limited, unable to cut through things like Lady’s Kalina Ann rocket launcher despite lore stating otherwise.
  • Limited Experience as Urizen
  • Superiority Complex: Vergil often sees himself as someone who can't be beat.
  • Considerably weaker as V
