Background[]
Ray Palmer grew up in Ivy Town, Connecticut, and attended Ivy University, where he studied physics under renowned scientists like Alpheus P. Hyatt. One day, he discovered a White Dwarf Star Fragment that had fallen to Earth. Ray hypothesized that by grinding a lens from this fragment and focusing ultraviolet light through it, he could reduce the size of anything struck by the light to a fraction of its original size. A few days later, Ray and his friends were out spelunking when they became trapped in a cave-in, forcing him to to risk his stability by using the shrinking lens on himself in order to escape the cave and save his friends' lives. Ray, on the other hand, did not explode and instead returned to his normal height. In fact, the shrinking lens worked much better on his body than he had anticipated, and he devised a set of control devices that gave him limited control over both his weight and size. Ray created the identity of "The Atom" and began a career fighting crime in Ivy Town while keeping his discoveries hidden.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Microscopic Stability: For some reason, Ray's physiology allows him to not explode when he is miniaturized unlike other living things which explode after a short time of being miniaturized.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced): Ray's an Olympic-level gymnast and an excellent hand-to-hand combatant. Due to Ray being a part of the Justice League of America, they taught him how to fight in the early stages of being a member.
- Judo: Ray Palmer often finds himself in situation where physical violence become necessary. As such, he has developed a proficiency in the martial art judo.
- Genius Level Intellect:
- Physics: Dr. Palmer has a Ph.D. in physics and was a full professor at Ivy University.
- Pedagogy: He has a teaching position at Ivy University.
- Swordsmanship: The Atom used a long sword as a weapon while living among the Katarthans, gaining considerable skill in its use.
- Acrobatics: The Flash has stated that he's not as nearly as agile the Atom.
Equipment[]
- White Dwarf Star Fragment:
- Suit: Ray created a suit that contains the white dwarf star fragments so he can control his mass and density.
- Bio-Belt: Originally, Ray's size/weight controls were located in his belt buckle. However, he later moved them to his gloves for greater accessibility and swifter transitions, and in the costume he wore after his days in New Morlaidh, had an encepholpathic grid in his mask that allowed him to do it mentally.
- Size Alteration: Able to shrink his body to varying degrees (including the subatomic level), achieved by storing most of his mass in a pocket dimension. As the Atom, Ray can assume any size from his normal six-foot stature down to sub-microscopic, although he generally deems a height of six inches as most functional.
- Shrinking:
- Rearrange Atoms:
- Mind Manipulation:
- Giant-Size:
- Shrinking:
- Body Modifications:
- Molecular Manipulation:
- Mass Alteration: Able to instantly alter his molecular density to whatever degree he desires. Ray can also assume any weight at any height—up to his full 180 pounds.
- Phasing: By shifting his density, Ray is able to make himself nigh-intangible. While in this state he can pass through solid object like they aren't even there.
- Nuclear Blasts:
- Mass Alteration: Able to instantly alter his molecular density to whatever degree he desires. Ray can also assume any weight at any height—up to his full 180 pounds.
- Flight: He is able to glide on air currents and stiff breezes. A favorite travel method Ray had, was to call some location on the telephone; when the intended phone answered, he could shrink down enough to literally travel through the phone lines in seconds to emerge out of the answering phone.
- Superhuman Strength: By shifting all his mass into his fists he can punch with incredible force.
- Superhuman Durability:
- Dimensional Travel: Ray found out that by shrinking beyond the subatomic scale he could slip beneath reality at the quantum level to traverse around the multiverse at will.
- Metal Knuckles:
- Shrinking Blanket:
- Crossbow:
- Laser Gun:
- Miniature Blaster:
- Molecular Destabilizer:
- Dimension Vibrator:
- ¨Magic Satchel¨:
- Katarthan's Sword: The Atom used a long sword as a weapon while living among the Katarthans, gaining considerable skill in its use.
- Indigo Tribe Staff:
Feats[]
Strength[]
- Knocked out Black Lantern Hawkman’s tooth.
- Hawkman is capable of surviving blows from Black Adam.
- Carried a White Dwarf Star Fragment (36.98 megajoules).
- Sent Deathstroke flying with a single punch.
- Destroyed an energy containment device capable of holding energy that buffed Jimmy Olsen enough to match Darkseid.
- Darkseid avatars/emanations are capable of casually backhanding Captain Atom, crushing Lantern Rings, and battling Superman. Even rookie Green Lanterns can create universes.
- Was able to tear through a Black Lantern.
- Could punch with the mass of a Dwarf Star.
- Knocked over Green Lantern Hal Jordan.
- Threw Guy Gardener.
- Unstable shrinking is capable of blowing up the Spectre (who let him).
- Green Arrow considers the Atom one of the strongest leaguers there on a team with Zatanna, Kyle Rayner and Wally West on it.
- Kyle Rayner could contain Imperiex’s energy, which was worth the destruction of entire galaxies.
- Should logically be comparable to Ryan Choi, considering their tech is the same.
- Ryan could casually defeat most of Atom’s rogues gallery.
- Ryan has claimed he could go denser than a dwarf star.
- With a single hit, staggered Wonder Woman.
- With a ruptured Bio-Belt, was capable of counteracting the Ignition Point, which was threatening to destroy the Microverse, the foundation of reality.
- Threatened to blow apart the Microverse by growing too large.
- A future version of Palmer lobotomized Darkseid, who at the time possessed the Anti-Life Equation.
- The Anti-Life Equation can blow apart an aspect of the Source Wall.
Speed[]
- Shrank faster than a point-blank nuclear explosion could expand.
- Dodged an attack from Black Lantern Martian Manhunter.
- Green Lanterns at cruising speed can traverse the universe in a few hours (87.6 quadrillion c, likely infinite).
- Martian Manhunter’s telepathy can work down to plank speed (788.3 duodecillion c).
- Shrank down to nothingness while fighting someone while their foe was exploding.
- Out-jumped an explosion.
- Accelerated to fill a junction with the probability of his existence.
- Can travel at speeds similar to Fiber Optics.
- The Flash while inside of Ray’s body claims that he’s not nearly as agile as Ray is.
- Considers himself the second fastest member of the Justice League behind the Flash (dubious). Even remotely humoring this would make him comparable to casual feats by other members of the Justice League, including:
- Green Lantern could send his probes to scan the Universe in a heartbeat (9.4 duodecillion c, potentially infinite).
- Superman can react in an attosecond.
- Shazam can fly to the Rock of Eternity, which exists beyond space and time (Immeasurable).
- Able to move faster than light by shrinking himself and riding photons inside the Microverse.
- Should logically be comparable to Ryan Choi, considering their tech is the same.
- Ryan has dodged blows from a suppressed Wonder Woman, who has blocked pieces from the Shattered God (52.5 – 315.5 quintillion c).
Durability[]
- Capable of making his density equal to that of a white dwarf star.
- Survived this large explosion.
- Survived an explosion while he couldn’t move to get away.
- Survived yet another explosion.
- Tanked a blow from the Necroma Force, which harmed the likes of Wonder Woman, Zatanna and Green Lantern.
- Tanked an energy containment device exploding in his hand. Said device was amping Jimmy Olsen enough to box with Darkseid.
- Darkseid avatars/emanations can withstand blows from the likes of Guy Gardner, Superman and Alan Scott when amplified by the multiverse’s willpower. A battle between two separate Supermen was shattering the boundaries of space and time and putting both of their universes in danger.
- Survived the explosion of a Star Drive.
- Survived being inside a Venus Flytrap.
- Survived this planet dwarfing explosion.
- Blocked a blow from Dr. Sledgehammer’s well, sledgehammer.
- Dr. Sledgehammer’s hammer was capable of hurting a held-back Superman.

- Thrived within the hidden city of Morlaidh when he couldn’t use his powers.
- Member of the Justice League.
- Defeated Chronos, Jason Woodrue, Aron Aut, Hawkman, various Black Lanterns.
- Responsible for the legend of Aladdin’s lamp.
- Created the Ant-Farm’s (an entire microscopic city) shrinking and teleportation technology.
- Survived the Blackest Night.
- Separated the Firestorm Matrix.
- Had a successful protégé in the form of Ryan Choi, the second Atom.
- Ryan would go on to spin kick Hitler in the face and insult his jetpack (yes, really).
Weaknesses[]
- Missing Hand (Formerly): During the events of Convergence, he allowed Baracuda to cut off his left hand to save Ryan Choi from the miniverse.
- Ray is fairly vulnerable to loud sounds when at smaller sizes.
- The Bio-Belt can be overloaded by specific frequencies and forced to a default state.
- Unable to shrink if it gets down to absolute zero.
- That the Bio-Belt itself can actually be hacked.
- Metal somehow messes up the signals from his size circuitry.
- If the belt itself gets damaged, it can rupture upon Atom changing sizes.
- Without his belt, Ray isn’t capable of shrinking himself, as despite all the huge feats he’s accomplished with the belt, without it, he’s stuck as a mere man, of whatever size he’s currently at.
Fun facts[]
- The Atom appeared in the season 10 premiere of the popular web series DEATH BATTLE! where he fought against Ant-Man and lost.
