Superman, real name Kal-El/Clark Joseph Kent, is one of the most powerful superheroes in the world of DC Comics.

I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard, always taking constant care not to break something, to break someone. Never allowing myself to lose control even for a moment, or someone could die. But you can take it, can't you, big man? What we have here is a rare opportunity for me to cut loose and show you just how powerful I really am.
~ Superman to Darkseid

The welfare of Earth and all its people will always be my primary concern. But if there is a solution of hunger, it must be one that comes from the compassionate heart of man and extends outward toward his fellow man. There's an old saying: 'Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime.' That simple message asks humankind to nurture with knowledge, to reach out to those in need and inspire others to do the same. That is life's greatest necessity and its most precious gift.
~ Superman

Something happened in Africa. Something pretty awful. But for a minute - just one minute, and for the first time - i got called upon to give my all. to have purpose. Like I was finally part of something rather than standing alone on the sidelines. like I was connected to the world... and man I want to feel that way again. That means no longer running from who I really am.
~ Superman

You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal... In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.
~ Jor-El to Kal-El in Man of Steel.

Well, I believe in truth, but I'm also a big fan of justice.
~ Superman to Steppenwolf.

Background[]

Born as Kal-El on the dying planet of Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lara sent him to planet Earth in a rocket as the last surviving member of his race. His rocket was discovered by a kind couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent, who took him in as their own under the name Clark Kent, and he was raised in the town of Smallville, Kansas. After discovering the truth of his identity, he discovered that he should use his unusual powers to protect this world that he calls home, and developed the persona of Superman... While as Clark Kent, getting a job as a reporter at the Daily Bugle in Metropolis.

Note: This takes info from Superman's extensive mainline comic book canon. We all know Superman and DC Comics as a whole have gone through multiple retcons. So Superman from the Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, New 52, Rebirth, Infinite Frontier, and so on. It would help to know which one is the main Superman, right? Well... they all are. See, the latest reboots basically said everything in the main series is kinda canon. Even when he had wacky powers like duplication, shapeshifting, matter manipulation, etc... Look, if you really dig into it, this isn't new. Plenty of characters have recalled events from supposedly retconned timelines before. See. Post-Crisis Superman did start as less powerful than in Pre-Crisis, but that was because of the mental blocks. Though he's not a complete composite; there's so many other Supermen out there. Superman One Million, Cosmic Armor Superman/Thought Robot, Red Son Superman, Dinosaur Superman/Supersaur, Injustice Superman! There's a bunch. Even beyond the "infinite multiverse" continuity, though, most mainline eras of Superman can be directly scaled to each other. Post-Crisis Superman fought Golden Age Superman, who matched Pre-Crisis Superman... you get the idea...

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Kryptonian Physiology: Superman's cellular structure is much more dense, resilient and biologically more effective than human tissue. He does not possess superhuman strength levels despite his enhanced cellular ability without his cellular structure charged with yellow solar energy. Without such charging, his physical capabilities are identical to a human of his height and weight who engages in regular physical activity. As an alien, he possesses several organs whose functions are not yet disclosed or understood, but are believed to be part of or the source of his bio-matrix force field and reclamation aura. Superman's body also stores energy actively within his bio-cellular matrix as an energy pattern that is linked to his body's electromagnetic field. This energy powers most of his electromagnetic capabilities such as flight, heat vision and other "sight"-based abilities while supplementing his physical abilities to superhuman levels. Superman has been shown to repel Darkseid's Omega Beams with his heat vision and has been shown to handle extreme heat from the Earth's Core.
    • Energy Absorption:
      • Solar Energy Absorption: As a Kryptonian, his cells function like a super battery, hyper metabolizing specific wavelengths of radiation as fuel to enable living functions and/or superhuman abilities. Different wavelengths of radiation have different effects on Superman's physiology and well being, but his cells cannot absorb or utilize all types of radiation. The wavelength of his home solar system's red sun enables his body to function on an identical level of a healthy human while the Earth's solar radiation in both its raw and filtered state through the Earth's atmosphere acts as fuel to enable all of his powers. Every time Superman uses any of his superhuman abilities, his body expends absorbed sunlight and he is capable utilizing any of them to various degrees through controlled circumstances. The solar-based radiation of a foreign blue star proved to increase his known abilities under a yellow sun to a higher degree and enabled additional powers. The existence and constant exposure to proven "healthy" radiation sources is not required for him to live and utilize his powers, but prolonged periods without exposure to them and/or utilizing his powers will require Kal-El to recharge in order to live and continue using his powers. His emotional state correlates to fluctuations in his solar storage. The more stress he is under, the more energy he retains from the sun.
      • Cosmic Energy Absorption: Kal's solar receptors can also absorb solar energy from cosmic energy, such as when he absorbed energy from Starman, gained from the Totality itself. So much that he felt like he could crack the Earth in half with a footstep if he wasn't careful.
      • Electricity Manipulation:
      • Soul Absorption:
      • Kryptonite Radiation Absorption:
      • Magic Absorption:
    • Godly Strength: Superman possesses near limitless strength, though the exact limits of Superman's strength is unknown. He is capable of lifting far in excess of one billion tons. Even being strong enough to break out of full Chrono-Suspension with just his strength. Different periods and intensities of exposure to Earth's solar radiation can cause his strength to fluctuate over time, but due to him living on Earth since he was a baby; Clark has managed to absorb incredible amounts of reserves of Solar Energy within himself. As time goes by, his strength and power tends to increase, whether he notices or not. Superman's known feats of strength include lifting an enormous pyramid and flying it to Mars without any strain, physically overpowering Darkseid in combat, moving Earth away from the Sun with aid of Green Lantern while Starbreaker was pushing it toward the Sun (a feat that would require quintillions tons of force), and having the strength necessary to shatter a small planet with numerous blows. Unhealthy levels of high exposure to solar radiation can exceed Superman's "normal" strength level. Clark's strength is so immense that when he's no longer holding back, his punches can shatter the boundaries of space and time, including separate timelines. Even when he was engaging in battle against his Earth-Two counterpart. Who was already strong enough to punch through dimensions inside the Universe Orb in order to get back into the New Earth universe. A great testament of Superman's strength is when he once lifted the Book of Infinite Pages which weights infinity if not, more than an universe momentarily before dropping the book.
      • Shock Wave Projection: Superman is strong enough to create powerful sonic booms with just the clap of his hands. These sonic claps are powerful enough to be heard across states.
      • Infinite Mass Punch: By vibrating his fist at just under the speed of light, Superman can use physics to his advantage by allowing his fist to gain a massive amount of mass, drastically increasing its impact force as he punches with the power of a dwarf star, which is equivalent to 10 octillion megatons of TNT.
      • Lineage Punch/World Forger Punch:
      • Knockout Death Punch:
      • Reality Shattering Punch:
    • Superhuman Speed: He is capable of moving, reacting, running and flying at superhuman speeds. While not as fast as the Flash, Superman can still fly at speeds faster than speed of sound. He can use this power to disarm opponents, catch bullets or shrapnel and cross vast distances in seconds. Thanks to his training with the Flash. Superman has been able to use his speed very creatively when in combat and travel vast distances faster than he normally could. Superman's speed is so great that even time manipulation has little effect on him. Clark has claimed to Sensor Girl that he could subdue her in a femtosecond, along with the Flash stating that Superman is among four other beings (Power Girl, Green Lantern, and Red Tornado) outside the Flash Family who are faster than him. He can even run and catch the Flash going at the speed of light and capable of having a causal conversation with the Flash in attoseconds.
      • Superhuman Agility: Superman's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to superhuman levels. This allows him to easily make sharp turns and easily maneuver while flying and moving at superhuman speed.
      • Superhuman Reflexes: Superman possesses reflexes far greater than any normal human being. This allows him to easily react to danger and events, and perceive the world in slow motion. His mind is able to process information at such speeds that he can perceive femtoseconds and attoseconds.
      • Molecular Acceleration: Superman can vibrate his molecular structure at various levels to achieve various effects. If he chooses, Superman can excite the molecules of whatever substance he vibrates through to critical mass causing it to explode. He even casually caught Captain Marvel, Jr just by simply vibrating at hyper sonic speed, thus matching the speed of Mercury. By matching the vibratory frequency, Superman exorcised a phantom planet from reality, thus saving the universe.
      • Vibration Manipulation:
        • Intangibility: Superman can vibrate his molecules to achieve an intangible state. While in an intangible state, Superman is immune to all attacks.
          • Invisibility: He can also vibrate so fast that light does not reflect off him, rendering him invisible.
      • Afterimages:
      • Phasing: Superman possesses the ability to control his speed and angular momentum at the molecular level, and control his molecular interactions to allow his body to pass through any substance.
      • Vortex Creations: Superman can use his speed to manipulate airflow for various purposes. He was able to use his flight speed to funnel a toxic chemical out of the atmosphere and into space.
      • Dimensional Travel:
      • Time Travel: Using the the cosmic treadmill Cosmic Treadmill Superman was able to move through time. Or by flying faster than the speed of light, he could break the time barrier.
        • Superman can temporarily halt the beating of his heart.
      • Super-Friction:
    • Godly Stamina: Superman is able to maintain continuous strenuous physical action for an indefinite period of time. This based on his body converting yellow solar radiation directly to energy, but is limited by physiological and psychological needs to eat, drink and sleep.
    • Superhuman Senses: All of Superman's senses are enhanced to immense superhuman levels, allowing him to perceive the world in far greater detail than the senses the average human possesses.
      • Super-Hearing: Superman has the ability to expand his hearing range, giving him the ability to hear sounds before the sound waves actually reaches him. This also gives him incredible hearing at extreme variances of sound and pitch frequency, allowing him to pick up noises from across the globe. He has shown enough control to block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source/frequency.
      • Super Smell/Superhuman Olfaction: On various occasions, Superman has demonstrated that his sense of smell is significantly enhanced to the point he can smell odors across the entire planet.
      • Super-Vision: Superman's vision processes the entire electromagnetic spectrum as well as allowing vast control over selective perception and focus. This umbrella ability includes the following:
        • X-Ray Vision: By focusing his vision, Superman can see through any volume of matter, except lead. He can see things behind a solid, opaque object as if it were not there and can focus this ability to "peel back" layers of an object, allowing hidden image or inner workings to be observed. Superman's enemies have attempted to use lead to hide things from his vision, mistakenly believing that anything with that material is somehow invisible to him. On the contrary, lead's opaqueness to his X-ray vision makes the material easy to spot with a wide-angle scan and allows Superman to narrow his search to those opaque objects. He can even use intensify his X-Ray vision to the extent that he could use it at a Gamma level to short out a Space Station's electrical engine.
        • Telescopic Vision: This is the ability to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. Though limited, the exact extent of the ability is undetermined. In function, it is similar to the zoom lens on a camera.
        • Microscopic Vision: This is the ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the atomic level.
        • Infrared Vision: Superman can see with better acuity in darkness, and to a degree in total darkness.
        • Thermal Vision: The ability of see through the heat tracks left by a living being or object.
        • Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: Superman can see well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum. He can see and identify radio and television signals as well as all other broadcast or transmitted frequencies. Using this ability, he can avoid detection by radar or satellite monitoring methods. This also allows him to see the aura generated by living things.
        • Theta Vision/Aura Vision:
        • Soul Vision:
        • Fourth Dimensional Vision:
      • Enhanced Sense of Touch: Kal-L could "read" the content of wire recordings with his fingers.
    • Accelerated Healing: After getting shot with a Kryptonite bullet by Metallo the wound was still closing up even though the bullet was slowing down his cellular restoration. He quickly healed after Wonder Woman cut his throat with her tiara.
    • Flight: Superman is capable of flying at supersonic speeds (over 2,000 miles per second) in a planetary atmosphere and at faster-than-light speeds while in space. He once traveled from the Vega star to Earth - a distance of over 25 light years - in minutes if not seconds, meaning he is capable of flying over one million times the speed of light.
    • Heat Vision: Superman can fire beams of intense heat from his eyes. These beams can be made invisible, allowing him to work undetected, and can be adjusted to affect matter on a microscopic level. Feats include powering up the giant ion planet moving engines, annihilating an army of Doomsday clones in one blast, potentially rivaling the heat of a Star and bypassing a target's outer shell, avoiding damage to a person's skull for surgical purposes. His Heat Vision was capable of piercing Epoch's Omega Barrier, along with replicating an event similar to that of a Blackhole. No one knows the true scope of Kal's Heat Vision, only that it surpasses by any of the standard of scientific measures, thus being derived of the sun. Therefore there may be no limit to the amount of he could discharge. His mastery over this power has allowed him to utilize it, to shoot for omni-directional use.
      • Solar Flare/Super Flare: Superman's last resort power that he'd discovered through his heat vision, was the ability to immediately expel all of his stored solar energy in one gigantic burst of explosive force. This Solar Flare uses all the stored energy within his cells at once, allowing for an all out AoE attack. He cannot use it more than once or twice however, as it drains him of all his powers until he can recharge his cells with solar energy. Give or take 24 hours, in that expanse of time, he is rendered virtually human and vulnerable. Luckily for Superman, thanks to the training he received from the Justice League, he learned to keep his flares smaller and more contained, so that it doesn't take as long for his powers to come back.
    • Interstellar Travel: Superman is immune to the nature of space and is not inhibited by its lack of gravity. He can travel the reaches of space where no human body could possibly survive without the aid of technology or protection.
    • Nigh-Invulnerability: His body is nigh-invulnerable due to his superhumanly dense cellular and anatomical structure as well as his radiating bio-electrical aura. Superman is under some circumstances resistant or immune to different forms and levels of lacerations, blunt force trauma, energy-based assaults, falls from great heights, explosions, the cold void of space, toxins and all known diseases on Earth. His supercharged bio-electric "aura" acts as an invisible "force field" radiating within a few millimeters from his skin. He can willfully utilize his aura strengthening it's power to a greater degree to provide an additional defense against certain levels of physical and energy attacks for a considerably short period of time, but doing so can endanger him should the attempted feat prove inefficient for any reason. Superman uses his aura by expanding it around a person(s) or object(s) to enable their structural stability when lifting or traveling with them. Superman's invulnerability has been in constant flux over the years. He survived the blast of nuclear warheads, entered the Earth's sun and emerged unharmed, withstand the impact of an exploding star, and survived being in the vicinity of an explosion equal to 50 supernovas while already significantly weakened by red sunlight.
      • Enhanced Immunity:
      • Solar Shield: The solar energy Superman stores also extends from his body, protecting him from all but the strongest blows.
    • Longevity: Superman can potentially live indefinitely with little to no aging to his being, so long as he continuously retains enough yellow solar radiation in his body.
    • Super-Breath: Superman can generate hurricane force winds by blowing, and also chill his breath to freeze a target. He can also breathe in large amounts of air to dispel clouds of gas by exhaling it.
      • Freeze Breath: He can chill the air as it leaves his lungs to freeze targets. He can also reverse the process to pull large volumes of air or vapor into his lungs.
      • Fire Breath:
      • Super Sneeze:
    • Super Scream:
    • Radar-Sensing Capabilities: Superman, as of Action Comics #49, has the ability to sense transmissions, energy waves, and signals spanning all across the globe; giving him the ability of also being a "super antenna".
    • Self-Sustenance: He does not need to eat or sleep so long he has enough yellow solar energy (but is still capable of doing so), and doesn't require oxygen to breathe enabling him to travel in space and underwater unprotected.
    • Super Teeth:
    • Blood Weapon/Fortified Blood:
  • Super-Disguise: In several stories set in and before 1942, Superman had the ability to disguise himself by twisting his plastic features into new facial arrangements. This also occurs in his battle against the Collectors.
  • Sound Manipulation: Superman can emit a supersonic whistle so high in pitch that humans can't hear it, but strong enough to destroy a tower. He also can project his voice over Metropolis and everyone there can hear him.
  • Hypnosis: Kal-L can control the thoughts of others with great concentration.
  • Superman can stop his breathing and heartbeat, faking death. However, Superman can only sustain this effect for a limited time before his body gives out.
  • Psychokinesis:
    • Telekinesis:
      • Telekinetic Rays:
    • Summoning:
  • Rainbow Projection:
    • Rainbow Rays:
  • Artificial Lightning/Super-Force Lightning:
  • Air Manipulation:
  • Duplication:
    • Image Duplication: Superman can duplicate images of himself, where one is like a ghost, one is like a hologram, and one is like a glass statue that shatters when hit.
    • Tiny Clones:
  • Telepathy/Mind Reading: As a Kryptonian, Superman is able to communicate telepathically.
  • Shapeshifting:
  • Memory Manipulation: Superman has the ability to erase memories. He used this ability on Lois Lane when he kissed her to make her forget that she had a relationship with him, and his secret identity.
  • Matter Manipulation:
  • Super-Sentries:
  • Mind Control:
  • Artificial Object Aging:
  • Super-Ventriloquism: He could project his voice without visibly moving his mouth or lips across large distances. He can project his voice through someone's body and threw radio signals.
  • Molecular Reconstruction: Superman was able to rebuild the broken bricks of the Great Wall of China with rays from his eyes.
  • Super-Mathematics:
  • Super-Weaving:
  • Super-Dancing:
  • Super-Eating: Can eat more burgers that are enough for an army!
  • ¨Super-Caller-ID¨/Telepathic Powers: He knows who's calling him with his telepathic powers, AKA, ¨Super-Caller-ID¨!
  • Super Plastic Wrap: SUPERMAN CAN THROW A PLASTIC WRAP S THAT CAN WRAP SOMEONE UP TEMPORARILY. This is akin to black magic. Where does this come from? Why doesn't this get used on low level criminals?
  • Genesis Enhancement: Superman was exposed to Warworld's Genesis-powered "white" sun. Genesis is the crystalized blood of an Old God. The mineral's energy enhanced his existing powers and granted new abilities. Superman claims that concepts like weight, distance, temperature and even spacetime have largely lost their meaning for him.
    • Energy Construct Creation: Superman can expand his bio-electric aura to create a giant construct of himself from Genesis energy.
      • Super Aura Avatar/Orphan Box Avatar/Genesis Energy Avatar:
    • Mechanokinesis: Superman was able to freeze Lex Luthor's Warsuit with a thought and cause it to break apart with a touch through his bio-electric aura.
    • Teleportation: Superman is able to instantaneously travel across interstellar distances. When teleported away by Lex Luthor, Superman was able to quickly travel back to Lex though a rift in space.
  • Chi Manipulation: Superman learned the art of Bagua under the instruction of I-Ching. He learned how to manipulate his Chi or Qi to help him gain a better control over his powers. Superman recommended to Supergirl that she should go train with I-Ching herself. Just so that she could regain proper control over her powers, after her fight with the Fatal Five. When going over his lost memories after the merging of the essences of both his Pre-Flashpoint and Post-Flashpoint selves, he remembered Super-Man that happened in his past, as a reference to his training.
  • Space-Time Manipulation:
  • Reality Manipulation:
  • Genius Level Intellect: He has shown incredible intelligence and computational abilities; his mind works sharply and with extreme speed relative to earth-humans. Kal discovered that he's 1000 times less intelligent than Brainiac. Who's spinal station can process and sort knowledge of over 7 octodecillion beings, with Brainiac's brain being 70 times that. Superman's analytical powers enable him to read information directly from machines (and, with careful usage of his heat vision, he can even reprogram machines). After implanting microbots into a few periods of a John Sandford book. He was not only capable of reading the book, but also complete texts of science, history, philosophy and current events; all at the same time.
    • Total Recall: Superman had total and perfect recollection of all the events that transpired in his life since his birth on Krypton, being able to recall even trivial and minute details or information from decades ago with impeccable accuracy. He could learn surgery in minutes by reading the appropriate books, and re-build an exploded computer by recalling where each component was. This power was facilitated by augmentation of his already formidable intellectual capabilities by the Sun's rays.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Due to having superpowers all his life and constantly engaging in battle with various foes, Superman has over time become an excellent hand-to-hand fighter utilizing a fighting style that directly complements his superpowers. Superman's combat versatility allows him to adapt to almost any foe and beat them. Additionally, Superman has been trained in boxing and according to Captain Comet his brawling skills are formidable. He was also trained by Wioska, a former combat instructor of Apokolips, Wonder Woman in Amazonian combat, bested and regarded as a natural hunter by Moon herself, and even learned some advanced martial arts techniques from Batman. Batman even complimented Clark, by agreeing that he can take care of himself, even without powers. In weakened state, Superman has shown capable of fighting blind while weakened to an extent, against the Superman Revenge Squad, solo. Even continuing battling blind and weakened against General Zod, for a while. Clark is a very experienced fighter, for he reveals that he has lived multiple different lifetimes/whole lives fighting and failing to defeat the likes of Barbatos, when he and Wonder Woman were trapped on a giant tower in Metropolis. Superman has fought the likes of Black Adam to a stalemate. Kal has engaged in a battle with Grikus the Undefeated for days, a being with the perfect genetics and training combined, to be a champion in combat sport with decades worth of fighting experience. Even when pushed into a near hopeless situation, Clark never gives up and is capable of multitasking, where he's can perform both acts of fighting and saving lives at the same time. Clark has even fought Braniac's Program to a draw, that possessed all the collective information and mindsets of all the Justice League's villains. Including the combat tactics of himself, Batman, Steel and Batwoman. While depowered, Clark managed to hold his own and defeat the likes of Owlman (Earth 3), Batzarro (Earth 29) and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Earth 42), nearly simultaneously. Also, even after being wounded with kryptonite based weaponry, he was still able to best his corrupted counterpart, Lord Superman. Superman prefers to end a fight as quick as he can and he's willing to target his opponent's vulnerable spots to gain a quick victory, if it's possible. Superman is considered a combat master, for he has been trained by some of the world's greatest warriors. His knowledge helps him to use his skills with precision and avoid unnecessary damage.
    • Boxing:
    • Jujitsu:
    • Krav Maga:
    • Wrestling:
    • Stick Fighting:
    • Swordsmanship: Considering Superman's reputation in hand-to-hand combat and his use of his powers. Superman is actually quite the skilled swordsman, capable of fighting on par with the Space Pirate Captain Freelance in a duel. Fighting alongside a magic based Justice League from a parallel future and even fighting Doomsday for a period of time. He fought on par with Hon-Ur when he briefly clashed blades with him, when he was powerless. He even slayed a Troll while protecting Jimmy Olsen, when he realized it wasn't even alive due to it not breathing and having no pulse. He overcame a copy of himself in a sword duel, when traversing the Fortress of Solitude without his powers.
    • Pressure Point Strikes:
      • Paralysis Inducement:
  • Indomitable Will: Superman has shown to have a powerful spirit, free of corruption and temptation. Having been raised by a kindly Kansas farmer and his wife, he was taught to protect life and help others. He is very optimistic and never gives up, even when things look bad. Superman has learned how to place mental inhibitors on his own power so that he doesn't accidentally "flex and cause the tectonic plates to shift." To him, they are the barriers that allow him to feel human enough to live a healthy life, and he only ever releases one of them when fighting a particularly powerful opponent or performing a difficult task.
    • Torquasm Vo: Torquasm Vo is a Kryptonian discipline that Superman uses sometimes. It's a means of entering the Theta State, where the user has full control of the realm, which the user can alter the surroundings however he or she fits, with the use of either their memories or use of their thoughts. Superman first used this martial art against Dominus after escaping the Phantom Zone. It is basically a means of focusing ones mental discipline to help fight adverse effects such as mental domination. It can be used to manipulate someone's mind, as when using this technique he's capable of dragging his opponent into the Theta State, with him. Superman used that ability during his fight against the Eradicator. It was used to create an illusion to let Superman enter inside the Eradicator. Superman can even run this technique through his consciousness, to find the difference between two memories of the same event, to discover which one of them is the real one; basically Superman's utilizing a lie detector when this technique is active. He can even share his findings with someone else.
      • Kryptonian "Theta State":
      • Illusion Projection:
      • Mind Manipulation & Protection:
    • Torquasm Rao: Allows him to tap into his instincts and separate himself from his body. Makes him able to prevent others from manipulating his mind and allows him to fight on the astral plane. This discipline not only empowers Superman, but also allows him to heal both his body and spirit from any harmful threats. When entering the astral plane also known as the Rao State, Superman can enter different dimensions when using this technique like Lois Lane did, regarding the use of his astral form, if he so chooses to. Superman can use this technique to however he wants, even in a dream, giving him full control in that state of consciousness. Such as when he created super static electricity with super friction, just by rubbing his hands together, while he was dreaming.
      • Astral Projection:
      • Energy Purification:
      • Increased Combat Instincts:
    • Horu-Kanu: The deadliest form of physical combat on Krypton. A martial art that involves taking advantage the body's pressure points. Superman learned this martial art in private and used it when fighting Batman who was filled with Green Kryptonite energy, Maxima, Tempest, Mongul II and Ultraman.
  • Marksmanship:
  • Intimidation:
  • Eidetic Memory: After his powers returned his memory became phenomenal. Clark's memory is so grand that he managed to memorize every nut, bolt and circuit of the Miracle Machine, after Brainiac 5 showed it to him no more than a few seconds.
  • Mental Resistance: After an attack by the Key involving telepathy, mind control and illusions. Batman suggested that the League should they should train with Martian Manhunter to combat this vulnerability, for future attacks. Thus Superman built up his mental defenses with the aid of Martian Manhunter, to make his mind more resistant against such threats. Which became useful when Clark fought against Arion's mind control spell; battling to reclaim his mind while utilizing the resistance techniques, that J'onn taught him.
  • Investigation: Both as a superhero and as a journalist, Superman is an expert at gathering evidence from all kinds of sources. Even Batman has given Superman props for his deductive reasoning skills. Green Arrow also refers to both him and Batman as the Hardy Boys. Clark even managed to solve how Massacre was capable of predicting his opponent's moves, by discovering that he can sense nerve signals, over the course of their battle. Kal reveals he was taught how to learn of his opponent's weaknesses and use it against them. Utilizing that skill, to identify and adapting to foes, that are able of getting stronger and smarter over the course of a battle. While striped of his powers, he has shown deducing the Key's identity via his voice and speech pattern, along with knowing he was still in the Fortress of Solitude, just by listening to the Key's prerecorded message.
  • Meditation: During his 20s, Superman traveled around to see the world and learn more about his powers. After first meeting with his "then" lover Terri Chung, they traveled to Bhutran. There, Superman learned of their customs and the secrets they had to offer, which involved meditation and yoga techniques; taught to him by Terri's father the former Rhana Bhutra. Superman even learned some mediation techniques that allows him to slow his heart rate down to mimic death and one to slow his metabolism down to allow him into a meditative state; all of which he learned while studying in Bhutran and from Batman. His training in Bhutran was most effective when his powers went out of control, due to excessive amounts of energy coursing through his body, at the time.He even resorted to meditation when creating the world of Metropia. His meditation practice was definitely useful when he first used Torquasm Vo to enter the Theta State, when fighting against Dominus.
  • Journalism: Clark is one of the best reporters on the Daily Planet, rivaled only by his wife Lois Lane. He gained a Pulitzer Prize at least in one occasion.
  • Leadership: Superman has proven many times over his ability to command respect and inspire others with his charisma, ardor and idealism. He often serves as the primus inter pares of the Justice League.
  • Multilingualism: Superman speaks Mandarin Chinese.
  • Fourth Wall Breaking:

Equipment[]

  • Superman Costume: Originally the normal Kryptonian cloth that infant Kal-El was swaddled with during his flight to Earth, Superman's costume becomes just as invulnerable as its wearer, if not actually more so, under the radiation of a yellow sun. Evidence that Superman's costume may become more durable than his body on Earth includes the fact that fights with various enemies capable of physically harming Superman still fail to tear or rip his costume. As a result, Superman's costume provides some measure of protection even when Superman is stripped of his superpowers, as it can resist the effects of drastic temperature change and physical abuse, though this says nothing about the ability or lack thereof of its wearer to sustain this type of damage under conditions of powerlessness. Superman's costume is also known to be able to shield its wearer (or anything wrapped in its cape) from the effects of friction.
    • Indestructible Cape:
  • Sword of Superman:
  • Supergun/The Expunger:
  • Unchained Armor:
  • Anti-Kryptonite Suit/K-Suit/Lead Armor: Superman occasionally used an airight full-body armor suit made of lead to block lethal Green Kryptonite radiations from reaching his body. Although the armor had no eyeholes as such, Superman could navigate with the suit on by using a viewscreen built into the interior of the helmet. The suit was frequently destroyed or transmuted into glass by Superman's enemies, presumably being replaced each time.
  • Kryptonian Biotech Suit:
  • Kryptonian Lenses: Clark Kent can use glasses with lenses from his Kryptonian spaceship to project his heat vision without melting them.
  • Supermobile: Usually just flies under his own power, but occasionally made use of a Supermobile to compensate for temporary loss of powers or for protection against non-yellow sun-systems in which Superman would often lose his powers or find them diminished.
  • Rocket-Belt: During his time in Kandor as Nightwing, Kal-El used a rocket belt to give him the ability to fly as he would be able to under Earth's yellow sun.
  • All items in the Fortress of Solitude:
    • Superman Robots: Android facsimiles of the Man of Steel imbued with inferior duplicates of Superman's main power set and used to stand in for him on occasions when it is necessary that Superman and Clark Kent be seen together in order to deflect suspicion or to defend Metropolis when their creator is unable to for a variety of reasons. Special Superman Robots have even been created to pose as Clark Kent in his civilian identity. Pollution eventually made it unsafe for them to use their superpowers.
    • Super-Computer: Superman's highly advanced supercomputer, located in the Fortress of Solitude.
    • Legion Flight Ring and Time Bubble: As a former or reserved member of the Legion of Super-Heroes Superman keeps a Legion Flight Ring (though he does not use it unless he cannot use his powers) and Time Bubble, the ring either cloaked on his hand, or like the Bubble, kept in the Fortress of Solitude.
    • Archer Rifle: As Commander El of the New Kryptonian Military Guild and leading Commander of the Red Shard faction, Superman kept a standard issue Archer rifle, though he only uses to disarm or hurt, never to kill.
    • Shrink Ray:
    • Gravity Gun:
    • Phantom Zone Projector:
    • The Miracle Machine:
    • Various technological artifacts from Krypton and other alien world Superman has visited in the past, usually contained within the Fortress of Solitude...

Alternate Forms[]

Electrical Superman[]

  • Energy Matrix: The radical mutation that had taken over Superman had turned him into an energy based life form that didn't normally exist wholly within this plane of reality.
    • Energy Form: Superman loses his traditional powers and transforms into a being of electromagnetic energy. In order to maintain physical cohesion in this form, he needs to wear a containment suit.
    • Lightning Bolt Travel: ability to travel as a bolt of lightning landing with a jolt when ever he landed.
    • Density Shifting: In this form, he can become intangible allowing him to phase through solid objects or down to the point where he is a normal human, but in this state he possessed no powers and was no more powerful that the average human male.
    • Electromagnetic Spectrum Manipulation: allows him the ability to influence all forms of energy allowing him to control magnetism, gravitational forces, radiation and electricity.
    • Electromagnetic Spectrum Sight: see in vastly expanded and different radiation spectra frequencies of energy.
    • Electricity Absorption: draw power from electrical sources.
    • Electrical Blasts
    • Solid Field: ability to produce a solid field that allowed him to physically interact with objects, he was also able to control the shape and size of his field.
    • Technopathy: ability to link with electronic systems such as computers
    • Electronic Teleportation: travel through systems much like electric current.

Sun Dipped Superman[]

This is Superman's power-up form, with it his powers are beyond the chart. Because of this form, his stats are powerful. His strength in this form allows him to lift 200 quintillion tons with one arm, casually tank supernovas like nothing and with it, telepathic powers barely work on him.

Feats[]

Strength[]

    • (Infinite Frontier)
  • Multiversal+:
    • (Golden Age)
    • (Silver Age)

    • (Infinite Frontier)
  • Omniversal:
    • (Golden Age)
    • (Silver Age)

    • (Post-Crisis) Shattered the primal void once being set there by Neron, with this being the ultimate foundation for all universes and dreams within the minds of men and gods.
      • This void exists as the pinnacle of existence in DC, the end-point of the infinite hierarchy of dreams, where all individuality stops existing whatsoever.
    • (Post-Crisis) While at his weakest, powered the Miracle Machine with his own life force, which recreated the entirety of the DCU after it had been consumed by Mandrakk.
      • The Miracle Machine calculates the life equation, which is the opposite of the anti-life equation, and one half of the dyad which immediately emanated from the monad which is the Source.
    • (Post-Crisis) Lifted the Book of Limbo with Captain Marvel.
      • The Book of Limbo contains every possible book and ‘only has one story’, with all the other ones in it. It was written by a Monkey within Limbo, who, due to having infinite time, was able to write anything and everything that could be possibly written on a typewriter. It is said that the Monkey will eventually write everyone out of Limbo, even though Limbo is the set of all possible characters that have not been told in a story yet. This is a reference to the Infinite monkey theorem, which states that eventually a monkey given infinite time will go through all possible permutations of English character strings and write down a famous work of art, such as Shakespeare. These writings in DC are self-referential and contain the realities that are described by the stories Rox Ogama is contained within the book itself.
    • (Post-Flashpoint) Shook the Phantom Zone while fighting Rogol Zaar and even said he was capable of destroying the Phantom Zone if he really put his head to it.
      • The Phantom Zone is a dimensionless structure in the Godsphere, and exists as an equivalent to Comic Book Limbo, which contains the set of all characters not yet written.
    • (Post-Flashpoint) Was considered by Dr. Manhattan as legitimately being able to kill him with one punch, as it was impossible for him to ascertain whether or not in his future vision Superman killed him with a singular hit, or he just destroyed the entire multiverse.
    • (Post-Crisis) Could mend Boomtubes and destroy a cube that was made out of the same material Boomtubes are composed of, even as Boomtubes are stable enough to increase beings to sizes which infinitely surpass the mortal multiverse.
    • (Post-Crisis) Was able to generate energy with his vocal cords which could shatter the true form of Darkseid’s godhead.
    • (Post-Flashpoint) After momentarily sundipping, was able to one-shot the World Forger and destroy his replacement multiverse.
    • (New 52)
    • (Rebirth)
    • (Infinite Frontier)

    • (Post-Crisis) Survived being in the primal void after being sent there by Neron, despite the fact that this exists beyond creation and reduces individuality into nothingness, the reduction into the emptiness that exists before form and thought.
    • (Post-Flashpoint) Could not be destroyed by Vyndktvx’s 5th dimensional magic, despite being attacked simultaneously during all time-periods at once, as well as being exposed to red sunlight and kryptonite (and being put up against a copy of Superman Vyndktvx was incarnate in, the thought of a Superman better than Superman, a thought that gets more powerful the more you think about it).
    • (Post-Flashpoint) Was able to facilitate the unification of gravity with electro-magnetism through running an electric scalar field in his body which extended to the 5th dimension, destroying a 5th dimensional super-weapon.

Weaknesses[]

  • Kryptonian Physiology: Under the effects of a "yellow" sun, Superman possesses the same potential weaknesses as an average Kryptonian. These include:
    • Vulnerability to Kryptonite: Since the destruction of Krypton, its remains (rendered radioactive by the explosion) have been spreading throughout the universe as Kryptonite, a crystalline substance whose specific radioactive wavelength is lethal to Kryptonians native to this reality.
      • Green Kryptonite: The most common form of Kryptonite is Green Kryptonite, and its effect is directly poisonous to him. Kryptonite from other realities do not necessarily have the same effects on all Kryptonians.
      • Red Kryptonite: Red Kryptonite, on the other hand, emitted radiation that would mutate Superman in unpredictable ways for a time span of 48 hours. No two samples of Red K would have the same effect on Superman, while any given Red K chunk could only affect Superman or any other Kryptonian once through exposure.
      • Gold Kryptonite: Gold Kryptonite emitted radiations that would permanently destroy Superman's powers without causing him direct physical harm; he would became equivalent to a normal human man of his age and build from so on.
      • While other varieties of Kryptonite, typically synthetic, existed, these three main varieties were the most commonly found in nature and impacted Superman each in their own unique, detrimental way.
    • Vulnerability to Magic: Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. Its permeability to certain wavelengths makes him vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extra dimensional signatures disrupt this force field. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies depending upon the special effects of the magic. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous.
  • Solar Energy Dependency: Kryptonian abilities will eventually weaken without replenishing their energy reserves with normal (yellow) sun radiation. When exposed to the same red solar radiation as Krypton's red sun Rao, it causes Kryptonians to lose their powers within a large amount of exposure until exposure to yellow sunlight reverses this effect. When exposed to orange solar radiation from a different galaxy, Superman's strength and abilities will drastically diminished, eventually weakening him. The radiation also affects his intellectual capacity and reduces his ability to think.
  • Vulnerability to Red Sun Radiation: When exposed to the frequency range of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a red sun, whether naturally or artificially generated, Superman lost all his superpowers and became, for all intents and purposes, equivalent to a normal human man of his age and build. Even on worlds that exist under yellow suns, the projection of red sun radiation at close range could render him imminently powerless. However, unlike Green K, red sun radiation does not harm Superman directly, and unlike Gold K, its effect is not permanent.
  • Vulnerability to Green Sun Radiation: Similarly to Red Sun, Kal-El will temporarily lose all superpowers in the presence of green sun radiation.
  • Vulnerability to Psionics: Superman could be totally incapacitated by a psychic intrusion if the source of the intrusion were capable of subverting his mental defenses quickly enough. Potentially, a talented psychic could render Superman unconscious or place him under mind-control if Superman were not given the opportunity to respond.
  • Sensory Overload: With his extremely acute senses, Superman can be overtaxed to the point of pain when encountered by extreme external stimuli such as hypersonics (hearing), balance, sight (flash bang).
  • Radiation Poisoning (formerly): Superman was exposed to deadly radiation during his encounter with the aliens from the Breach, causing him to rapidly age. He slowed the progression of his condition via regular infusions of rejuvanating magic from Enchantress, but this was undone by a sorceress working for Mongul.
    • Power Limitation: Superman's sickness has caused his powers to fade and weaken. Although still significantly stronger than a human he is less powerful than an average healthy Kryptonian.
  • The Black Tide: If Superman's chi flow is disrupted by being overwhelmed by this disturbed substance, he'll suffer from fatigue and pain; until he sub comes to unconsciousness. Eventually he will die, unless acupuncture is administered in time.
  • Lead: Superman cannot see through lead with his X-ray vision powers.
  • High-Pitched Noises: Because of his super hearing, Superman's ears are extra-sensitive to extreme noises. This gives individuals like Black Canary and Silver Banshee who use sonic screeches, a particular advantage in combat against him.
  • Vulnerability to Q-Energy: Q-Energy had a similar effect on Superman as Green Kryptonite and could potentially destroy him.
  • Although Superman can survive with no food, water, oxygen or sleep, it's been stated a lack of rest and dream taxes a Kryptonian's mind, to the point Superman becomes prickly, irritable and psychologically unstable. On one occasion, the mental stress from prolonged lack of sleep made Superman manifest a split personality that tried to kill his Clark Kent identity with deathtraps.
  • It is possible that Atron-Rays, which affected the renegade Kryptonian Klax-Ar might strip the powers of Superman or any other Kryptonian, if the exposure is prolonged.
  • A special type of rare metal ore had the ability to siphon Superman's ecto-energy, weakening Superman's powers and potentially creating super-powerful monsters from the ectoplasm. Another metal ore, buried deep into the Earth's mantle, had the ability to leech the solar radiation from Superman's tissue, leaving him in a perpetual state of lethargy until it was neutralized.
  • As a rule, any substance native to Krypton from before its destruction had the potential to affect Superman (or any other Kryptonian) in the same manner that an analogous substance made of Earth elements might do to a normal human.

Trivia[]

  • Was once in a porno with Big Barda
  • Superman was at one point in his life a vegetarian.
  • Superman admitted that the only being he is afraid of is Doomsday.
  • Clark's favorite movie is To Kill A Mocking bird.
  • Henry Cavill vacated his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe because Warner Bros. has put all Superman films on hold since 2017's Justice League (which was a box office failure) and he wasn't working on any new projects. He did say he is willing to return to playing Superman if Warner Bros. commences further films of the character; he was eventually confirmed to reprise his role in a proper sequel to Man of Steel.
  • Superman has many connections to the biblical figure, Jesus. They were both born from godlike families, they were both sent to earth with the purpose of being its savior, and they both died and came back to life.
  • One episode of Justice League Action has Superman indirectly denounce his duel against Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
  • Stalin literally translates to 'Man of Steel'. Superman once arrested Stalin and Hitler for the 1939 Invasion of Poland. In Superman: Red Son, Stalin and his government raises Superman, who becomes Stalin's political successor after his death.
  • He had sex with Talia al Ghul before Batman.
  • Superman owns a small army of robotic clones, which function primarily as his butlers and can sometimes assist in his fights. These robots are still nowhere near as powerful as Superman himself.
  • It is rumored that George Reeves was almost killed because of his portrayal of Superman. George was dressed as Superman and addressing some children fans. One of the kids pulled out a pistol and wanted to confirm if Superman was really bulletproof. George convinced the kid to drop the gun; claiming that 'if the bullet was to ricochet off Superman's chest, then it might harm someone else.'
  • Superman invented the concept of a modern superhero flying naturally without wings. However as iconic as this trope is, it was not created from the comics. Superman traditionally jumped from place to place, akin to the Hulk as both have powerful leg muscles. But when the Fleischer Cartoons appeared in the 1940s the animators decided to also give Superman true flight to make animating Superman much easier. This aesthetic is so common today that some of Superman's rivals share this trait (ShazamThor Odinson, the SentryGoku).
  • Superman was heavily inspired by 1800s strongmen; which is where his suit's design is based on. The idea that Superman wears 'underpants on the outside' is actually in reference to these strongmen; as their leotards were almost fully transparent and so they needed an extra layer of clothing to cover their visible crotch.
  • Superman's shield on his chest was inspired by a sheriff star: to show that he was a force for good.
  • Superman's powers were originally only superhuman strength, speed, durability, senses and intelligence: basically enhancements of what people can do. His super-vision eventually included X-Ray vision. Heat vision was introduced as a variation of his X-Ray vision; with the radiation being so intense that it could melt objects. This was retconned to be Superman simply expelling his solar energy from his eyes.
  • In 1980 (4 years before Dragon Ball) Akira Toriyama wrote the 37th chapter of his manga Dr. Slump. In it was a joke-character named Sourman or Suppaman; a fat drawf who is a clear parody of Superman.
  • Superman has had a poor reputation as a video game character, with Superman 64 being considered one of the worst games in gaming history. Multiple game creators claim that depicting Superman is very difficult without nerfing him significantly. The Superman Returns video game adaptation gave the city of Metropolis hitpoints since Superman's nigh indestructibility made it unlikely for him to die in-game. And while Injustice: Gods Among Us was a stellar addition to the fighting game genre with its gameplay and story, Superman was introduced as the main antagonist of the story.
