~ Son Gohan

Son Gohan is the one of the deuteragonists of the of the famous anime/manga series, Dragon Ball. He is the son of series protagonist Son Goku.

Background[]

Firstborn of Son Goku and Chi-Chi. He began as an easily frightened four year old. However, even at such an early age, he possessed tremendous hidden strength in the form of a "hidden potential" that manifested in moments of extreme emotion, namely anytime the kid lost himself in anger such as during Goku's and Piccolo's fight against Raditz. Although he began as very shy and easily frightened boy, after spending a year training with Piccolo, he grew strong and brave, gradually tapping into more and more of his hidden strength, until the culmination of his arc came at the climax of the Cell arc, where he ascended into a Super Saiyan 2. 7 years after the defeat of Cell, Gohan was protecting the city in his superhero alias, the Great Saiyaman, he was also going to Orange Star High School where he met his future wife, Videl Satan. When the threat of Majin Buu came Gohan, really wasn't very effective since during the downtime between the Cell and Buu arcs, Gohan's power had decreased what? making him unable to even transform into a Super Saiyan 2, that changed after about a year after Kid Buu had died when Gohan wanted to train with Piccolo to regain the power he had as an adolescent.

Note: This takes Gohan from Dragon Ball Z, GT, and Super. Both the anime and manga versions. Excluding Infected Gohan when he was possessed by Baby from the Baby Saga in terms of forms.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Human/Saiyan Hybrid Physiology:
    • Superhuman Strength: While as a child, Gohan showed no level of superior physical strength, after beginning his training under Piccolo's tutelage, his natural Saiyan physical strength started to develop properly, becoming strong enough to crack big boulders of rock in less than a month, and even hurt Piccolo with just punches after some months of training. By the time he became a young adult, Gohan's superhuman strength had increased to the point where he could easily carry a Boeing 747 plane full of people without any discomfort, or cause earthquakes by just shaking his feet against the ground, all this without even without transforming into a Super Saiyan. He can also move in increased gravity with ease, destroy entire mountains with random blows, and even lift the extremely heavy Z Sword, and more impressively, he became able to lift, and swing the sword with no discomfort, in a very short period of time. During the Tournament of Power, Shin acknowledged that while Dyspo held advantage in speed, Gohan's raw strength and power was heavily superior, and that fighting him head-on would be a suicide move.
    • Superhuman Speed: Even as a child, Gohan's prodigy speed was noticed by the likes of Vegeta, Krillin, and even the bio-android Cell. As a teenager and young adult, and also, as a highly trained Saiyan, Gohan is easily capable of casually outrunning cars just by jogging, catch bullets with tremendous ease, and travel thousands of miles in astonishingly short periods of time. By using his ki to either fly, or enhance his body's natural speed, he can move much faster, even to the point where he can keep up with light-speed fast opponents such as Dyspo, the Sonic Warrior.
    • Superhuman Durability: After beginning to tap into his Saiyan potential, Gohan's body became incredibly tough, to the point where he could fall several stories high and feel just a tiny bit of pain, however, by the time of Vegeta's arrival to Earth, Gohan was able to resist a brutal beating by the back-then evil Saiyan, and even survive a Ki-Explosion while unconscious. By the time he became an adult, Gohan was so physically strong, that he could easily survive all Earthling-made weapons, with bullets simply bouncing off his skin, and explosions not even leaving a mark on him. Using his ki he can enhance his durability even further.
    • Superhuman Senses: As a hybrid-Saiyan, Gohan possesses superhumanly enhanced senses of smell, taste and sight, which further help him in battle, improving his combat reflexes and reaction time, with this, he can easily follow objects moving faster than the speed of sound or even dodge powerful attacks from his opponents.
    • Powerful Lungs: As a hybrid-Saiyan, Gohan's lung capacities are far beyond those of normal Earthlings, as he has been shown to survive on planets with no apparent atmospheres, like the time when Babidi teleported them to Pui Pui's home planet, or when he lived inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for over a year. In The World's Strongest, Gohan flew to the mesosphere and showed no apparent need of air or oxygen to survive for an extended period of time. Though it can be assumed, that long deprivations of air would eventually lead to his death.
    • Ki Manipulation:
      • Flight: The ability to take flight through the manipulation of ki.
      • Ki Sense: The ability to sense the energy of other beings.
      • Ki Transfer: Gohan can grant some of his energy to a wounded person to restore some of their energy.
      • Healing: In the manga, due to being a disciple of two Supreme Kais, Gohan possesses the ability to heal people, restoring them to perfect health and full stamina even from the brink of death. However, he has yet to perform this ability.
      • Telekinesis: A technique that allows the user to manipulate objects and other people with the power of one's mind.
      • Ki Blast: The most basic form of energy wave.
      • Hidden Potential: First, Gohan charges up and creates a whitish-blue energy sphere around his entire body. He then flies forward with his arms in front of him and fires a huge whitish-blue energy wave from his fists at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
      • Mouth Energy Wave: An energy wave fired from the mouth.
      • Masenko: The user places both hands above the head with the palms facing the target and one hand in front of the other with the fingers going in opposite directions. When the user thrusts their hands forward, they call the name and fire a beam of yellow, white, or orange energy.
        • Double Masenko: Gohan puts both of his hands out at his left and right sides, and he then fires a Masenko energy wave out of each hand in opposite directions, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
        • Super Masenko: First, Gohan raises his hands above his head like the normal Masenko, but charges it with more power. Then, while it is being prepared, some of the excess energy is released as streaks of yellow electricity. Finally, Gohan brings his hands forward and fires the attack at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
        • Explosive Madan: First, Gohan raises his hands above his head and charges yellow energy in his palm. He then thrusts his hands forward and fires a short, but giant yellow shock wave of energy at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
        • Masendan: First, Gohan puts his hands above his head like the normal Masenko, but keeps charging it until it forms an energy sphere. Then, he grabs the energy sphere with his hand and draws it back up to his side. Finally, Gohan shouts, "Take this!" and throws the attack at the opponent, inflicting a great amount of damage.
        • Gekiretsu Madan: First, Gohan raises his hands up to his sides and charges a yellow energy sphere in each hand. He then puts his hands forward and fires a barrage of yellow energy waves against the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
        • Wild Rush Blaster: First, Gohan kicks his opponent a few times, he then beats them up and kicks them to one side. He holds one hand with the other supporting it upward in a fashion similar to the Explosive Demon Wave and, as he shouts, "I've had enough!", he forms an energy sphere with excess energy releasing off of it in the form of medium-sized energy rings. Finally, Gohan brings his hands forward and fires a powerful yellow energy wave with a large energy sphere at the end at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
        • Full Power Masenko: First, Gohan forms a massive golden-yellow energy shield around his body. Then, he charges more power, condensing the energy shield into a large spiraling energy sphere in front of him. Finally, Gohan fires the energy sphere at the opponent in a fashion similar to an Energy wave, inflicting high amount of damage.
        • Ultimate Masenko: First, Gohan raises his hands above his head and charges streaks of yellow energy around his hands. Then, he puts his hands forward and forms a white energy sphere. Finally, Gohan fires a huge golden-yellow shockwave of energy from the energy sphere against the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
      • Kamehameha: A powerful ki blast fired with two hands after concentrating a large amount of ki.
        • Full-Power Kamehameha: While the fundamentals of the technique are exactly the same as a regular Kamehameha, the overall power of this Kamehameha is even greater. Used in Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound.
        • Super Kamehameha: An advanced and more powerful version of the Kamehameha.
        • Ultimate Kamehameha: As for a regular Kamehameha, Gohan cups his hands at his sides and charges blue energy, then thrusts his arms forward and fires the Ultimate Kamehameha. When used as a Super Saiyan 2, it is performed in the same way as a regular Kamehameha, but without taking the stance normally seen for the technique. Instead, Gohan stands perfectly still while reciting the phrase. On the final syllable ("..Haaa!"), he quickly cups his hands behind his back and fires an enormous energy wave at his opponent.
          • Ultimate Explosive Kamehameha: Gohan charges up an extraordinary amount of energy before firing a supermassive Kamehameha at his opponent, engulfing them in a blast reaching far into outer space.
        • Father-Son Kamehameha: First, Gohan fires a Super Kamehameha at the opponent, who struggles against the attack. Then, the spirit of his father Goku appears behind him in a Kamehameha stance and shouts to him "Now!!" Finally, Gohan pulls his hand back and throws it forward as he charges more power into the attack, overpowering the opponent and inflicting a massive amount of damage.
        • Kamehameha Return: The technique involves the process of a Kamehameha being erased by another Kamehameha. The collision of both techniques cancels out each other as a result. The end result is a beam clash between the two energy beams, that results in two blasts of equal power creating an explosion that knocks both users off their feet, or a battle for supremacy where one Kamehameha entirely overpowers the other.
        • Twin Dragon Shot: A double energy sphere-controlled version of the Kamehameha.
        • Electric Kamehameha: First, Gohan charges up an incredible amount of ki so that the golden aura around his body keeps flashing. Then, he brings his cupped hands to his left side and charges a golden-yellow Kamehameha. Finally, Gohan brings his hands forward and fires the attack with the flashing light emanating from his body at the opponent, inflicting a huge amount of damage, even creating a mushroom cloud in its wake.
        • Justice Kamehameha - A spherical version of the Kamehameha used by Gohan in his Great Saiyaman outfit. Used in Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn.
        • Super Great Saiyaman Beam: Gohan's version of the Super Kamehameha while in his Great Saiyaman form.

      • Special Beam Cannon: The move is performed by touching the index and middle fingers of one hand to the forehead and charging enough ki to attack. Its speed changes to the power level of the user performing the move. When ready, the fingers are extended forward, and two thin energy beams are unleashed from the fingers. One remains straight while the other coils around the straight beam. The resulting beam is quite powerful, drilling through most targets, and exploding on the ones it can't.
        • Masenko Beam Cannon: A combined attack utilized by Gohan and Piccolo.
        • Special Beam Cannon (Beast): As crimson lightning strikes around him, Gohan smirks and begins gathering streaks of bluish-white light, pulsing crimson and azure bolts of ki before holding his index and middle fingers to his forehead. Then, Gohan recites the technique name and brings his charging arm forward (holding it with his other arm to support it) to fire a brilliant white Special Beam Cannon at the target, completely decimating them.
      • Galactic Donut: Gohan executes this attack by raising his index finger into the air and circling it above his head to create a yellow ring of energy, whose appearance is very similar to the Destructo Disc. Once created, he transports the circular energy ring over his opponent, then lowers and homes it on them. This results in the opponent being gripped and trapped within the circular attack.
      • Spirit Ball: Used in the manga against the Namekian in Black during the Super Space-Time Tournament.
      • Justice Finishing Pose: Fighting Poses used while as the Great Saiyaman.

      • Gekiretsuhadan: The user fires flurries of large, bright ki blasts that is more powerful than the average energy volley. It is useful for quick, effective, as well as causing massive accumulations of damage to the foes. The difference with the Full Power Energy Barrage Wave is that the user does not move his hands while firing it. The waves themselves just chase the opponent. Used in Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.
    • Saiyan Power: As a hybrid-Saiyan, Gohan possess the Saiyan's genetic trait that allows Gohan's power to continue to increase as he fights and rise dramatically after recovering from near fatal injuries. It was this very trait that allowed Frieza to identify Gohan as a Saiyan after he his power increased after the near fatal injuries, he received from Second Form Frieza were healed by Dende.
  • Genius-Level Intellect: Being rigorously disciplined by his mother into studying college-level topics and classes, Gohan's intellect became rose to genius levels, from a very young age. Despite loving martial arts and adventure, Gohan's lifelong dream has always been to become a successful academical professor and investigator, which, later in adulthood, he would easily achieve. His genius is so recognized amongst the academic community, that he is constantly invited to give speeches and conferences at several different schools and research centers. Nevertheless, Gohan has given his formidable intellect has another use while in battle; using his incredibly intuitive mind, he can easily develop strategies and combat movements while he's on the move. His prowess was such that Goku himself appointed Gohan as the leader of Team Universe 7 during the Tournament of Power, as Gohan was as strong as him, but far more intelligent, making him the most suitable candidate for being leader. Even Piccolo, who is acknowledged to be one of Earth's smartest beings and a nigh-unmatchable strategist, was confident in Goku's decision of appointing Gohan as the leader and was always following Gohan's orders and combat strategies during the Tournament.

During his training under Shin, Gohan removed the legendary Z Sword from its resting place which he was eventually able to wield after getting used to its immense weight.

Alternate Forms[]

Great Ape[]

This transformation occurs when a person with Saiyan heritage (and with a tail) absorbs enough blutz waves through the eyes, usually from looking at a full moon. This stimulates a gland in the tail, enabling a seemingly unavoidable transformation. In this form, Gohan's capacities increase 10-fold. Because Gohan never had any proper training, Gohan loses all form of mental control, becoming a primal beast. However, during his fight against Vegeta, Goku's words were able to reach Gohan enough to regain some of his rational thought and focus on his real enemy. Gohan only transforms into this state three times throughout the series as ultimately, his tail was permanently removed. Gohan is the only known Saiyan/Human hybrid to ever achieve this transformation, due to having been born with a Saiyan tail.

Unlock Potential[]

Unlock Potential is a state of self-enhancement to focus the full extent of their current capacities. Gohan acquired it from Guru while on Planet Namek, who noted that Gohan's capacities were by far the greatest he had ever seen. Gohan's abilities were all greatly enhanced, and as a side effect, continuously grew at noticeably faster rates with each battle, as noted by Vegeta. This awakening made Gohan's power increase multiple fold, making him equal to Vegeta's strength when the latter appeared on Earth. This, however, only appeared to release his initial potential as only through moments of extreme emotion could he manifest all of his power. This powered up Gohan is still able to use his Super Saiyan forms.

Super Saiyan[]

Gohan became a Super Saiyan at nine years of age (ten if including the months spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), during the intense training he endured with his father to help him ascend. At the time, Gohan was the youngest to appear as a Super Saiyan until the appearance of his brother, Goten, who accesses the state effortlessly at seven years old. In this state, his capacities are increased either 10-fold or 50-fold. In this state, his musculature grows more defined, while his eyes become sterner and green, and his hair turns blond while standing up more with no loose strands. His energy is manifested as a golden aura. After Gohan had his potential unlocked by Old Kai, Gohan would rarely use this or any higher form, due his base state's power already being well-beyond the previous limits that Super Saiyan alone would provide. However, doing so still increases his power as proportionally as previously. After Gohan’s earnest studies led him to need glasses, his diminished eyesight is restored in his Super Saiyan forms. During Gohan's first appearance as a superhero, he used this form to lessen chances of people recognizing him. He became known as the Gold Fighter by the residents of Satan City, until he adopted a new gimmick of Great Saiyaman. Later, Gohan uses this form again during the return of Frieza to defeat Ginyu in Tagoma's body (in the anime while defeating Shisami in the manga/movie) to compensate for his lack of training in recent years, letting him access virtually his previously level of power. Super Saiyan Gohan was initially going to make his debut appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu prior to his first appearance in the manga. He was cut from the game but can still be found in-game files.

Super Saiyan Full Power[]

Gohan is one of the first to gain full mastery over Super Saiyan. After Goku noted the inherit weakness of transforming, a reduction in stamina and ki, Gohan learned to perfect this form with his father. By working to remain transformed for extended periods of time, Gohan and his father gradually learned to overcome the transformation's drawback to feel as natural in this form as their base state. This mastery of Super Saiyan enables full control over the energy output and consumption, completely diminishing strain on the body, even while constantly maintaining maximum power for. It also has caused no affect to Gohan's emotional nature and subsequently gives of a pure energy that attracts wildlife. During Frieza's revenge, despite still able to access Super Saiyan, reduction in performance from lack of training left Gohan only able to maintain Super Saiyan at its base level and only for brief periods of time. Despite his decline in conditioning and stamina, his power proved great enough in this form to signal Goku from Beerus' planet. Later, he retrained with Piccolo to become properly conditioned again and use this form as freely as ever. The power was shown off more during his battle with Lavender, even while blind Gohan is able to use the ki he gives off like a radar, allowing Gohan to fight and overwhelm Lavender in this state, even while dying and his body rotting from poison.

Super Saiyan 2[]

Gohan was the first and the youngest to reach Super Saiyan 2, achieving it at the age of 9. This occurred when a larger portion of his dormant power was awakened in rage from Perfect Cell killing the peaceful Android 16 (though in an anime-only flashback, Gohan had already instinctively stumbled upon it while training with Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber). While in this form, Gohan's muscle mass increases slightly and hair stands straight up and spikier with the exception of one lock that hangs down. Also, his aura is surrounded by repeated flashes of blue electricity. Originally, so new with this massive boost of power, it warped Gohan's attitude, giving him an almost sadistic sense of mind as he wanted to make Cell suffer for his evil actions, whereas before Gohan was a pacifist to a fault who didn't want to hurt the villainous Cell. As an adult during, despite his lack of increased might since defeating Cell, Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 power left Shin and Kibito in awe. His power also proved able to push Majin Buu's resurrection over halfway. Later, Super Saiyan 2 allowed Gohan to free the Z Sword from its stand and lift it when all Supreme Kais failed before. After training with the Z Sword, Shin believes Super Saiyan 2 Gohan can beat Majin Buu.

Great Saiyaman[]

The Great Saiyaman (グレートサイヤマン Gurēto Saiyaman) is Gohan's transformation alter ego and an attempt to hide his true identity from his classmates when he attended school in Satan City. The Great Saiyaman was first born when Gohan transformed himself into a Super Saiyan in order to disguise himself as he fought some bank robbers on the morning on his first day to school. However, his classmates (and in particular, Videl) began to note strange similarities between himself and the mysterious "Gold Fighter" (as they described his Super Saiyan form). Concerned that his identity might be figured out, but wanting to protect the city from random crime, he approached Bulma and asked her if she could invent a device that could instantly change his appearance. With his new costume ready and easily accessible with the press of a button, he could now protect the city without his identity being easily discovered.

Super Great Saiyaman[]

When Gohan becomes a Super Saiyan as Great Saiyaman, he is referred to as "Super Great Saiyaman". Despite the new disguise and protection of his identity being discovered, the Great Saiyaman identity still did not ensure Gohan's identity from being safe. Juggling between his school and superhero life proved to be difficult, and his classmates and teachers noticed that he was gone for a long period of time when he asked for bathroom breaks. Also, Videl proved to be a thorn in Gohan's side, as she was both reluctant to accept assistance from him and most importantly wanted to discover his true identity. At one time, the Great Saiyaman's true identity was in jeopardy of being discovered when he changed from being the Great Saiyaman to his normal form and noticed that his classmate Angela was standing in front of him during his change; however, he was saved when she revealed that she did not have her contact lenses on at that time and could not see anything, and that her big secret about Gohan was the fact that he wears teddy bear underwear. Gohan's luck ran out when Videl eventually discovered his true identity, agreeing to keep it a secretly only if he agreed to enter the World Martial Arts Tournament and to teach her how to fly, to which he reluctantly agreed. After the demise of Kid Buu, Gohan continued to fight crime as the Great Saiyaman alongside Videl, who now had the identity of Great Saiyaman 2; nonetheless, he eventually retired from heroics to become a scholar. All Great Saiyaman costumes were made by Bulma. The costume initially consists of a green tunic, black tights, white gloves and boots similar to those used in Battle Armor uniform, a red cape, and an orange-and-black helmet with a visor. Because the rules of the World Martial Arts Tournament forbid any type of armor, Gohan swapped out the helmet in favor of a white bandana and sunglasses, similar to the hero of the 1960s TV show Kaiketsu Harimao. He maintained the sunglasses and bandana look for the Saiyaman identity after the defeat of Kid Buu, and subsequently abandoned the red cape. In Dragon Ball Super, Gohan went back to wearing his helmet and cape again. The name "Saiyaman" is a reference to Gohan's Saiyan heritage. He thought up the name on the spot while confronting two youths who were speeding in a car, and was easily offended when they laughed at his name. Later, the name was frequently mistaken for others, such as the "Great Soyman" or the "Great Singing man", which further aggravated Gohan however over the years this issue has resolved itself as Great Saiyaman is now known worldwide as a superhero. He was also noted for his comical poses (comparable to or even more ridiculous than the poses of the Ginyu Force) he would perform when introducing himself and was generally written off as hilarious or weird. Nonetheless, he was still a respected hero within Satan City. While in this disguise, Gohan still uses his energy-based techniques. Recently, Gohan has begun to use other attacks and transformations as well during his battles with Watagash. He adopted an orange finger beam he calls the Great Saiyaman Beam. He also begun to use his Super Saiyan form as well if situations called for it, opting to go with what the film director called it his "Super Great Saiyaman" form.

Potential Unleashed[]

This power up was achieved by a special ceremony performed by Old Kai. In addition to Old Kai's Unlock Ability granting Gohan full access to all his developed capacities, Gohan is capable of pushing his power well-past those levels via his Potential Unleashed state. This power-up is when the full extent of his dormant capacities are released. This state looks identical to his base state, but with the addition of a lock of hair hanging down over his forehead in the anime. Once accessing his Unlocked power, Gohan's subtle differences are present to his appearances, including more pronounced facial features including sterner eyes, and is able to manifest a large white aura. While in this state, Gohan does not require his glasses to properly see. Gohan is also referred to as Ultimate Gohan (アルティメット悟飯 Arutimetto Gohan) in this state. He is also known as Mightiest Warrior and Strongest Warrior in this state. As this is a harnessed manifestation of his natural power, Gohan is able to maintain this state indefinitely throughout his daily life unhindered. Despite this, he still requires regular training to properly access this state and thus becomes weaker over time with lack of training like any other. During which, his diminished self can only access this form while maxing out his power, as seen in Super Hero, also causing his hair to spike up like Super Saiyan. With Potential Unleashed, he could easily overwhelm Super Buu, and hold his own against Super Buu (Gotenks absorbed). In the Dragon Ball Super anime, after Gohan resumed training with Piccolo and reached a higher understanding of his powers, his abilities evolved to such a level that he could rival Super Saiyan Blue Goku in a short fight, with him requesting his father further amplify his power via Kaio-Ken, albeit this let Goku defeat Gohan instantly. In the manga with his full power he could match Super Saiyan Kefla (who was not at her full potential) - though was noted to be weaker than Goku, with Krillin wondering if Gohan could surpass Goku by devoting himself to training. Gohan doesn't possess his Potential Unleashed state in Dragon Ball GT.

Potential Unleashed Super Saiyan[]

While rarely doing so, Gohan can utilize his Super Saiyan forms on top of his Potential Unleashed state. In the original release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Gohan transformed into Potential Unleashed Super Saiyan to fight Beerus, though this was removed from the final movie. In the anime, as Gohan noted to Goku, he made a conscious choice to avoid using Super Saiyan forms as he is aiming for a different ultimate form. In the manga, he notes that he chose not to use Super Saiyan forms as he has chosen to grow more from his human side.

Beast Gohan[]

Gohan Beast ( ・ビースト Son Gohan Bīsuto) is an evolution of the Potential Unleashed state unique to Gohan awakened through rage as a result of witnessing his teacher Piccolo's apparent death at Cell Max's hand. In this form, Gohan's eyebrows turn white, while his hair turns light gray and lengthens to resemble his old Super Saiyan 2 hairstyle as a boy. His eyes become fully red with black pupils. Gohan's power is such that he effortlessly withstood a full power punch from Cell Max and defeat him with ease.

Equipment[]
