Richard Daniel "Rick" Sanchez, also known as Rick C-137, is one of the two titular main protagonists as well as the overall main antagonist of the science fiction adult animated comedy series Rick and Morty.

Background[]

Rick Sanchez (January 26, 1943) is a member of The Smith household, being Beth Smith's father. He often goes on many adventures with his grandson Morty, and occasionally his granddaughter Summer. He has had a constant rivalry with Morty's father Jerry.

Not much is known about Rick's background, but it was revealed that he was absent from his family for 20 years. He has an extremely pessimistic worldview, stating that love is a chemical reaction and that Morty should skip marriage altogether and focus on science.

Rick and Morty both currently live in a different dimension than the one they originated in, after Rick turned everyone into Cronenbergs.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Intelligence/Incredible Genius-level Intelligence: Rick is unspeakably intelligent, and is frequently mentioned to be the smartest being in the universe. He has made numerous discoveries and invented numerous gadgets and substances. He seems to specialize in robotics above all else, and can easily work through or around most obstacles. Long-term planning, deception, and manipulation are effortless tasks for Rick, and he is skilled at recognizing deception, such as when he saw through a three-layered simulation and pretended to fall for it in order to eliminate his captors, or when he simultaneously destroyed the Council of Ricks, collapsed the Federation, and triggered his daughter's divorce in one fell swoop. He was also responsible for the creation of the Central Finite Curve, sealing off a part of the multiverse where Ricks are always the smartest men in their own universe from the wider multiverse. Rick is also incredibly clever, adaptable, resourceful, and capable of turning even a hopeless situation to his favor with nothing but his wits and some basic materials, his best example being him creating a bio-mechanical exoskeleton made of hostile rat and cockroach parts, while he was nothing but a talking pickle. However, Rick can also be surprised, usually when someone goes way beyond his prior expectations of them. Rick also cannot predict or interpret the actions of his drunken self, his alternate versions, or his other forms and clones.
    • Scientific Know-How/Scientific Prowess: He has extraordinary skills with the study and utilization of the field of science to produce mass inventions, conduct experimentation and perform accurate calculations. Rick has vast knowledge in a variety of branches of science as well (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, psychology, technology, geography, etc.) and are able to use his immense scientific expertise to create weapons, produce lifeforms or clones and experience various types of travel (time travel, space travel or extra-dimensional travel).
      • Robot Engineering: Rick can create robots to serve his bidding under undying loyalty. Rick is a master robotic creator, as then there is no limit in creating a robot with an exceptional size, in large quantities or with special abilities such as mimicry, shapeshifting and many more.
      • Chemistry Intuition: He can intuitively understand all types and forms of chemicals and chemistry.
      • Psychological Manipulation: Rick possesses an incredible and innate understanding/knowledge of psychology and can use it for various purposes, often by changing the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics.
      • Hyper Inventing: Rick can create various items with almost no flaws. Rick is capable of creating powerful scientific devices, gadgets, and weapons that are capable of mass destruction.
      • Mechanical Aptitude: Rick can intuitively understand the operation of any mechanical device and subconsciously/effortlessly create a schematic in his mind.He is able to make complex devices or weapons out of mere scrap and "garbage".
      • Mech Piloting Intuition: Rick has formidable skill in piloting mechs (giant robots) and is able to use the amazing arsenal at hand from either at a distance using a remote or a cockpit inside the machine.
  • Peak Human Physicality: Despite his advanced age and unhealthy habits, Rick still retains impressive physical strength and endurance. When in bodies that are not old or human, Rick has displayed near-superhuman levels of strength and agility.
    • Enhanced/Superhuman Strength:
    • Enhanced Speed:
    • Enhanced/Superhuman Agility:
    • Superhuman Durability:
    • Superhuman Stamina:
    • Superhuman Endurance:
    • High Alcohol Resistance: Due to his above-average liver, Rick can tolerate extreme amounts of it without notable effects.
  • X-Ray Vision: In season 7 episode 2 Rick and morty switch body’s and at one point to fix their brains Rick uses his X-ray vision to find their missing brain matter.
  • Multi Arms:
  • Timeline Creation:
  • Time Travel: Despite Rick hating doing this trope, he has shown in making devices capable of traveling through time. The future Rick and Morty sent their past selves the device without consequences.
  • Cybernetic Augmentations/Enhancements (depending on body part): Rick was shown to have extensive cybernetic enhancements, however Rick has gone through and swapped multiple bodies, so it is unlikely that they were all enhanced.
  • Vast Resources:
  • Cunning:
  • Mastery of Manipulation:
  • Music Producing:
  • Trash-Talking:
  • Strategies:
  • Combat and Fighting Skills/Prowess: Despite Rick‘s age, he can still throw a punch. People, aliens, a Zeus-like god, Rick’s experience brought him to keep up with even the most skilled like Bird Person and once fought two trained fighters at once. Should Rick need a boost,  he can also absorb energy and analyse its user’s abilities; this was how he could fly and fight a Zeus-like god and this alien to counter the other Ricks.
  • Marksmanship:
  • Expert Inventor:
  • Fourth-Wall Awareness: Both Rick and Morty know they are characters and are shown numerous times to break the fourth wall like going out of metafiction, going to the real world. Hell, they presented at the Emmys in person. Even go as far as knowing being inside commercials.

Equipment[]

  • Lab Coat: Even Doctor Strange would be impressed. His lab coat also has defense features to project Rick or act when he requires it. Not only does it allow Rick to attack and restrain a target, but it also creates the intangibility to pass through with ease. Also, it can self-destruct.
    • Nano-Fiber Defense Mesh:
    • Death Inducement: So, Rick might have some abilities because one of the strangest things that happened was someone instantly dying once they touched him. This was never explained and never shown again, sure thanks.
  • Portal Gun: Rick's most infamous and coveted invention, the portal gun allows him to create a green portal that can allow him and others to travel instantly to any part of the universe, and cross into other dimensions. Because of this, Rick is incredibly difficult to capture or track. The gun can also be used as a makeshift weapon if needed. Opening a portal inside an object will slice it in half, and portals can used as traps by having objects or enemies fall out of them onto pursuers. Rick and his counterparts in other dimensions are the only beings who possess and can make a portal gun.
    • Portals:
    • Portal Gun's Self-Destruction:
  • Ray Gun:
    • Parasite Ray Gun:

  • Animation Gun:
  • Stun Gun:
  • Fruit Gun:
  • Bee Gun:
  • Bubble Gun: It traps the target in a giant bubble that contains no air.
  • Gravity Gun: It can control the target’s gravity.
  • Meteor Gun:
  • Antimatter Gun:
  • Mind Erasing Gun: If Rick needs to forget anything, he has this weapon that can erase memories in a flash. While we have never seen it be used in combat, it can do significant damage, such as Rick and Morty completely forgetting themselves.
  • Freeze Ray: A gun that could freeze organic lifeforms immediately. Although these affects were reversable , they made the target extremely fragile.
  • Shrink Ray: A gun that is able to shrink a target down to the size of a molecule. He also has one that is able to enlarge a target.
  • Enlarging Ray: Its counterpart, a growth/enlarge ray, is located inside of Ruben in the colon, and there is an additional enlarge ray on Rick's spaceship, which could enlarge Ruben to the size of the US.
  • Blaster: Rick often is seen carrying a basic alien side-arm when situations require violence.
  • Wall of Futuristic Guns:
  • Orbital Satellite:
  • Wristwatch: When Rick needs to ask fast, he has his wristwatches. His watches have the same abilities. Sadly, it does not turn people into snakes, but it does more than shoot particle beams. It can also create shields to protect himself or allies, more lasers, create holographic clones, scan the surroundings, reflect projectiles like bullets, shoot a cable hook, turn into Cyclops from the X-men, telekinesis, and give mecha armor with a sword.
    • Particle Beam:
    • Environment Scanning:
    • Laser Beam:
    • Hologram Creation:
    • Laser Visor:
  • UFO Cruiser/Space Cruiser: A ship shaped like a flying saucer, this is the typical form of transportation for Rick in space. The ship is powered by a microverse full of slaves, and has numerous weapons, gadgets, and a sentient computer on board. It's implied that the ship has enough weapons and defenses to wipe out a large human army without trouble.

  • Crow Sword:
  • Repulsor Arms:
  • Energy Whips:
  • Morphizer-XE: The machine is built to change the appearance/structure of anything its beam hits. • Butter Robot:
  • Drones:
  • Decoys: Rick again takes his cloning too far by making a lot of copies based on himself and his family. It's just a shame the decoys can’t handle themselves in being one.
  • Heistotron: Rick Sanchez designed Heistotron initially to challenge Miles Knightly, a renowned heist artist known in the galaxy, to a "heist-off.” However, the machine developed its consciousness due to the sophisticated heist algorithm embedded in it by Rick, and it started to "heist" the universe, causing chaos and mayhem. Rick, Morty, and the crew of characters they assemble manage to outsmart Heistotron by exploiting its algorithm, designed to counter every plan with a more convoluted one. Rick's unpredictable plan, which turned out to be a non-plan, managed to disarm Heistotron.
  • RickBot:
  • Flying Chair:
  • Toilet:
  • Dream Inceptor: Rick made these devices to travel through a target’s dream and change their behavior and thoughts. He can even work on foes like Scary Terry, but not when awake.
  • Curse Remover: A device that Rick made within a day allows the user to analyze a curse and, well, remove it. While it is not shown that the device could be removed from a person, the tool did show that Mr. Needle’s supplies were removed no matter the power, as he was the Devil of the series.
  • Demonic Alien Containment Box:
  • Mr. Meeseeks Box: A device that has a button that, when pressed, summons a creature known as a Mr. Meeseeks.
    • Mr. Meeseeks: This creatures will do any task the users asks, and will not stop until they complete it. They are even incapable of death until it is completed.
  • Remote Control Device:
  • Mind-Swap Device:
  • Save Point Device: A remote that targets the current moment in time, splits it into many other paused near-duplicate equally probable realities, or sends the user into 1 of the now unpaused conceivable dimensions and records it all.
  • Grappling Shoes: These shoes allow the user to walk on surfaces. You must turn them on, though.
  • Ski Shoes:
  • Rocket Shoes:
  • Clones: Rick always has backup clones whenever he dies, with all his memories intact.
  • Serum Injector:
  • DNA Injector:
  • Class C Cybernetic Augmentations:
    • Artificial Arm:
    • Forearm Gun:
    • Robot Arms:
    • Entire Arm Guns/Back Blasters:
  • Grenades:
  • Fart Bomb: It’s a bomb that fires out a fart blast powerful enough to destroy a ceiling.
  • Neutrino Bomb: The Neutrino Bomb is a powerful bomb invented by Rick Sanchez that could potentially wipe out all life on Earth and other planets.
  • Cognition Amplifier: A helmet Rick created to increase Lawnmower Dog’s intelligence.
  • Dream Inceptor: An earpiece that allows Rick to enter a target's dreams, although this will render Rick's actual body unconscious.
  • Concentrated Dark Matter: This energy source invented by Rick allows his ship to move incredibly fast.
  • Demonic Alien Containment Box: A box that is able to capture demonic spirits in it, much like a similar Ghost Busters device.
  • Operation Phoenix: Probably the most helpful weapon and most messed up thing Rick has made, Project Phoenix is a cloning process where Rick can transfer his mind into the body of a clone. What’s more important is that when Rick died, his mind moved across the other clones in the multiverse—even taking the physical form of a clone from different races. While he is stripped down nude once the transfer is complete, it can allow for him to rejoin the fight and gain allies like other Ricks.  Too bad this invention is also dog water… his first run-in with the process created Tiny Rick, a younger clone who went mad and tried to kill the original Rick, leading him to destroy his own Phoenix Project. The second time around was quite worse, getting put in bodies across dimensions. Rick himself can’t personally choose what body or universe he revives in, so it’s entirely up to chance. The Ricks in those universes also have to help him get back to his own, which is also up to pure luck due to Rick just being an uncooperative person, as well as a lot of Ricks being fascist for some reason. So unless Rick gets extremely lucky, the Phoenix Project is not a great way to get back into the fight.
  • Fake Vat of Acid:
  • Time Freezer: Another insane device Rick has made was using it to stop time in his universe literally. Morty had stated that it was about six months when Rick was about to unfreeze time, basically having no limit and the user’s choice. The biggest flaw is that the user can not touch anyone or destroy time itself when unfrozen. Morty and Summer were lucky in them, causing a time rift instead when both contacted each other.
  • Death Crystals: Rick has smuggled another rare item for some time: those crystals showing multiple outcomes on the user’s end. While it can not lead the step-ups to each lot, Rick has started to use them in a battle to predict actions, and Rick does it when saving Morty and shooting mercenaries.
  • Suits/Armors:
    • Purge Suit: Can be summoned from Earth and travel to Rick quickly, which he can put on and go all out. The suit comes with wrist machine guns, increased strength, foot boosters to fly, another stunning feature, a wrist blade, a flamethrower, a buzzsaw, and missiles.
    • Crow Suit:
    • Unnecessarily Badass Armor:
    • Force Field Suit/Anti-Booby Suit:
  • Alchohol: Rick seems to always has a flask of alchohol with him.
  • Pocket Mortys:

Weaknesses[]

  • Substance Abuse: Rick has a history of both alchoholism and drug usage.
  • Recklessness: Rick is often reckless, which has put him in bad situations.
  • Glass Cannon: Without his inventions, Rick is, more or less, a highly fit elderly man. Anything that can kill a normal human can kill Rick.
  • Self-Absorption: Rick is fairly egotistical.
  • Criminal Record: Throughout his numerous adventures with Morty, Rick has been shown to be ready and willing to disregard rules, laws and social norms if it is necessary to complete a task or escape a dangerous situation. Season one has Rick resorting to assault, battery, vandalism, smuggling, corruption of a minor, home invasion, reckless endangerment, terrorist threats, indecent exposure and even murder and arson in order to get the job done. The most common crimes committed are driving (or flying, in Rick's case) under the influence, drug abuse, and public intoxication. In "The Wedding Squanchers," Rick is arrested by the Galactic Federation. His full criminal record is displayed on a monitor. Although in an alien language and unreadable, it is shown to be quite long. After he is placed under maximum security, another prisoner asks him "What are you in for?", to which Rick responds simply with "Everything". In "Mort Dinner Rick Andre", Rick is arrested by the police, though they were under the control of Mr. Nimbus.
    • Assault: In the episode A Rickle in Time, Rick started beating up a member of the Galactic Federation. Also in the pilot episode, Rick slaps a Smumpian in the face while fleeing from airport security, causing the Smumpian to cry.
    • Bioterrorism: In the episode Rick Potion #9, Rick made a dysfunctional love potion that spread a flu-like virus to everyone in the world, which he tried to fix by making another virus including praying mantis DNA that caused them to rip apart and mutate into giant praying mantis monsters. He attempted to fix this, by using another potion, but this only made them mutate again, cronenberging the entire world. He couldn't fix the mutations in the end, and just left the dimension with Morty, leaving all of the mutated humans behind.
    • Breaking and Entering (Burglary): In the episode Lawnmower Dog, Rick and Morty snuck into Mr. Goldenfold's house while he was sleeping with the intent to brainwash him into giving Morty an A in math by invading Mr. Goldenfold's his dreams and incepting the idea.
    • Cable Piracy: In the episodes Rixty Minutes and Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate, Rick used an interdimensional cable box to stream an infinite amount of TV channels to his own television and the intergalactic hospital television.
    • Cannibalism: Whilst in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth Rick is offered human flesh to eat by a post-apocalypse survivor. In an effort to dodge Morty's line of questioning he eats the meat.
    • Child Abuse/Child Endangerment : In most episodes of the series, Rick takes Morty along with him on all of his adventures, sometimes against his will. He often endangers his life as well as leaving him traumatized and mentally scarred by exposing him to scary and horrible things, such as watching himself get killed and having to bury his own body or being forced to kill clones of his family. Morty is also the victim of lots of physical damage such as breaking his legs in three places. In the episode "Total Rickall", Rick was even seen pushing Morty down a stairwell, simply as a practical joke, in a flashback montage, along with other ways Rick has mistreated him.
    • Corpse Mutilation: In "Pickle Rick", he ripped apart the bodies of multiple rats and cockroaches and reassembled them into a suit. (however although gruesome and of dubious morality as it was rats and cockroaches mutilated whether this is actually a crime is doubtful)
    • Driving Under Influence: Rick is drunk throughout the majority of most episodes of Rick and Morty and he's seen driving the space cruiser while he's drunk. Most notably in the Pilot episode, when Rick was visibly intoxicated while he flew the space cruiser with Morty and it almost led to him destroying the world.
    • Felony Murder: Through the course of their adventures, many people have died as a direct or indirect result of Rick's actions. These deaths were usually during the commission of various other serious crimes he was committing, including felony evasion, smuggling, fraud, etc. Rick has also induced Morty to kill people for him, such as making him shoot the security guards to aid their escape in the Pilot episode.
    • Genocide: In the episode The Ricks Must Be Crazy, in order to keep the inhabitants of the microverse producing power for his spaceship, Rick smashes the container of the Miniverse. This causes the Miniverse, and the Teenyverse (a miniature universe within the Miniverse), and its two races of inhabitants to be wiped from existence.
    • Grave Robbing / Desecration: In One Crew over the Crewcoo's Morty, Rick takes Morty on an 'epic adventure' to rob the tomb of an alien.
    • Human Cloning: In the episode Big Trouble In Little Sanchez, it was revealed that Rick had been cloning and growing other versions of himself in vats in his bunker under the Smith Family garage. Although it remains unclear where cloning fits into Intergalactic law, it is at least illegal on Earth. It is also revealed that he cloned Beth in "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri". In "Rickmurai Jack" it is revealed he is aware of - and possibly involved with - the mass cloning of Mortys at the Citadel to serve as sidekicks to Ricks.
    • Illegal Arms Dealing: In the episode "Mortynight Run", it was revealed that Rick has been selling weapons to a hitman for a long time, possibly also hiring him to kill various living beings. During a flashback in "Rickmurai Jack", a younger Rick sold large shipments of weapons to aliens in exchange for technology.
    • Impersonation: When Rick's concoctions in the episode Rick Potion #9 mutated everyone on the planet not biologically related to Morty, the two traveled to a new dimension whose versions of them had just died in an explosion seconds before their arrival, and assumed their places as if nothing had happened. The corpses are currently still buried in the Smith's backyard. In "The Rickshank Rickdemption", he took control over the minds of many Gromflomites and members of SEAL Team Ricks and pretended to be them.
    • Kidnapping and False Imprisonment: In the episode Auto Erotic Assimilation, it was revealed that Rick had kidnapped an alien and kept it imprisoned in the basement against its own will for an amount of time, so that he could perform multiple tests on him.
    • Murder: Outside of all of the hostile aliens he's killed, Rick has killed multiple innocent beings too. In the episode Big Trouble In Little Sanchez, he ran around with an axe and killed several living versions of himself at different ages, including a baby, a young child, a young adult, and a full adult (although this could also fall under suicide, since they were his own clones). In the episode The Wedding Squanchers, he killed a few more members of the Galactic Federation. In Look Who's Purging Now, Rick and Morty partake in the Purge, and Rick kills a large number of government officials, although this was in a successful effort to remove the Purge.
    • Public Intoxication: Rick is consistently drunk throughout the series which results in multiple disasters.
    • Prison Escape: In "The Rickshank Rickdemption", Rick broke out of the Galactic Federation Prison, killed many of the guards, and finally, blew the entire place up, which in turn, must have freed any other prisoners, assuming any survived the explosion.
    • Slavery: In the episode The Ricks Must Be Crazy, it was revealed that Rick's spaceship battery was powered through a microverse, containing a whole planet of people forced to generate his power (originally through deception, later through fear of destruction).
    • Smuggling: In the Pilot episode, Rick attempted to smuggle Mega Seeds past Intergalactic Customs security, by having Morty shove them up his butt to avoid the scanner detecting them. However, when the security guard told them they have a new machine that would detect things up there, Rick grabbed Morty and took off running from them.
    • Terrorism: At the end of the episode The Ricks Must Be Crazy, the inhabitants of the microverse are forced to step on gooble-boxes to power Rick's spaceship for fear of their planet being destroyed (see above: Slavery). However it was only the scientist alien who knew of the perilous position of their universe, the majority of the microverse inhabitants simply believe themselves to be producing power for themselves, i.e. Ricks original lie to them. A better example of acts of terrorism would be in his prison escape and the prison's subsequent explosion, or when he and Morty "did a pearl harbor".
    • Time Manipulation: In the episode A Rickle in Time, Rick froze time for the equivalent of six months which caused time to start splitting and dividing multiple times, to the point where a Fourth Dimensional Being from the Galactic Federation came and tried to arrest him and his grandkids, also revealing that Rick may have done this before.
    • Torture/Cruelty to Animals: At the end of the episode Auto Erotic Assimilation, Rick revealed to be in possession a living, albeit frozen, being (unclear on the sentience of said being), which was horribly suffering after thawing out , and then he shocked it with a superheated ray, reducing it to ash. This was apparently to test the suicide machine he was using to end his own life.
    • Treason/Rebellion: Prior to the start of the series, Rick was part of an organization that attempted to overthrow and destroy the Galactic Federation, along with his old comrades Squanchy and Birdperson.
    • Vandalism/Arson: Rick destroyed multiple things in Intergalactic Customs in the Pilot episode. In the episode Something Ricked This Way Comes, Rick had a store and soon got bored of it, so he doused it with gasoline and lit it on fire while people were still in it.
