Character Profile Wikia
Plastic Man render

Background[]

Real Name: Patrick "Eel" O'Brian

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Malleable Physiology: Plastic Man's powers are derived from an accident in which his body was bathed in an unknown industrial chemical mixture that also entered into his bloodstream through a gunshot wound. This caused a body-wide mutagenic process that transformed his physiology. Eel exists in a fluid state, neither entirely liquid or solid. Plastic Man has complete control over his entire molecular structure. According to Batman, O'Brian is the only person on Earth who can stop Martian Manhunter.
    • Elasticity: After being exposed to unknown chemicals Plastic Man gained the ability to manipulate his own body on a molecular level, meaning he has complete control over its shape, size, and density. The most recognizable aspect of his powers is his ability to stretch his body and his limbs over long distances without effort. There is no limit as to how far and long he can stretch his body and limbs, as his maximum stretch limit is unlimited. He retains his elasticity even when unconscious.
      • Metamorphosis: Plastic Man can assume any shape he desires regardless of whether it is a person or an object. When transforming into something else he maintains his red and gold color scheme.
        • Flight: Plastic Man can fly by turning in a flying object or vehicle.
        • Fangs: Plastic Man can grow strong teeth capable of biting off a Durlan's arms.
      • Size Alteration: As an extension of his shape-shifting powers Plastic Man can increase or decrease his size at will. He could shrink to the point where he could hide inside Doctor Psycho's ear. He can also grow as big as a skyscraper or a mountain. There is no limit to how big and giant he can grow and no limit to how small he can shrink.
      • Body Inflation: Plastic Man can also inflate his body and his body parts like a big giant balloon without exploding. There is no limit to how big he inflates his body and his body parts, as his maximum inflation limit is unlimited.
      • Regeneration: Plastic Man can heal from any injury at an extremely rapid speed. After being brutally beaten and having multiple teeth and both his legs broken Plastic Man recovered in seconds and with no sign of pain.
      • Shape-Shifting: He can contort his entire body into various positions, shapes, forms and sizes impossible for ordinary humans, such as being entirely flat so that he can slip under a door or using his fingers to pick conventional locks. He can also use it for disguise by changing the shape of his face, hands, feet and body. In addition, he can alter his bodily mass and physical constitution at will, there is no limit to the sizes and shapes he can contort himself into. With great concentration, he can change his color.
      • Superhuman Agility: These stretching powers grant Plastic Man heightened agility enabling him flexibility and coordination that is extraordinarily beyond the natural limits of the human body.
      • Superhuman Strength: Plastic Man can increase his strength by adopting larger and combat-oriented forms. He also retains some degrees of superhuman strength while in his base human form.
      • Invulnerability: Plastic Man's powers extraordinarily augment his durability. He is able to withstand corrosives, punctures and concussions without sustaining any injury (although he can be momentarily stunned). He is resistant to high velocity impacts that would kill an ordinary person, resistant to blasts from energy weapons, and is completely bullet proof. His bodily mass can be dispersed, but for all intents and purposes it is invulnerable.
      • Immortality: Plastic Man does not appear to age; if he does, it is at a rate far slower than that of normal human beings. He did not visibly age, mentally or physically, from World War II to the 1990s. In the aftermath of the JLA story Arc "Obsidian Age", Plastic Man was discovered to have survived for 3000 years as little more than crumbs on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. He is now over 3000 years old and is still active as a superhero.
      • Self-Duplication: After merging with one of Disposable Man's clones by swallowing him, Plastic Man gained a new ability to create an living duplicate of himself. He can also absorb them back into himself at will.
      • Color Change: The only limitation he has is color, which he cannot change without strong and intense concentration. He generally does not use this ability and sticks to his red, black and yellow colored uniform and his body's flesh tone.
    • Telepathic Immunity: As stated by Batman (in JLA #88), "Plastic Man's mind is no longer organic. It's untouchable by telepathy." (Mostly immune to mind control. It's unknown if Batman meant that Plas is immune to just mind control or to telepathy altogether from that point on...considering Plas's history with mind scans, mind wipes, and the use of J'onn's telepathic link.)
    • Ultrasonic Detection: His body will start to "ripple" when an ultrasonic frequency is triggered.
    • Rubber Organs: Plastic Man's organs are rubber as he is; he also shifts them around in his body to prevent harm. He doesn't keep his brain in his head, which has allowed him to survive decapitation.
  • Lock Picking:
  • Contortionism: Plastic Man's physiology allows him to squish, squash, twist and bend in ways impossible for a normal human being.
  • Voice-shifting: Plastic Man can also use his voice-changing ability to disguise and mimic other people's voices, including super heroes and super villains.
  • Throwing:
  • Thievery: As a former criminal Plastic Man is an expert thief.
  • Intimidation: Plastic Man could intimidate the Cabal into leaving his loved ones alone.
  • Master Detective: Although no longer a criminal, he has insight into their mindset, enabling him to be an effective sleuth. He is also considered to be a lateral thinker and much smarter than he lets on.
  • Expert Combatant: O'Brian beat up an ill-trained Bruce Wayne, when they were all had their identities split from their superhero counterparts. Also due to him being a member of the Justice League of America, he has participated in training sessions, learning how to fight

Equipment[]

  • Uniform: Plastic Man's unitard can like its owner stretch, inflate, morph, and change size; it is fluid like and unbreakable (material like this is most likely rare and probably why Pat's costume is so small).
  • Goggles: The groovy goggles are Pat's trademark. They can stretch, inflate, morph and change size.

Weaknesses[]

  • Dark Energy Bonding (Formerly): After being exposed to the Dark Multiverse energy, the Terrifics members became tethered to each other, which causes an explosion if they are separated more than a mile from each other.
  • Vulnerability to Electricity: Despite his rubber-like consistency Plastic Man's body can still conduct electricity and strong electric attacks can cause him great pain.
  • Vulnerability to Heat: His semi-liquid form remains stable at relatively high and low temperatures...provided that the temperature change is gradual. A sudden change, induces a complete change of phase, creating a truly solid or truly liquid form. Plastic Man was incapacitated in the JLA story arc, "Tower of Babel", when mercenaries froze and shattered his body. Once thawed and reassembled, he was physically unharmed (though emotionally traumatized). In the JLA story arc "Divided We Fall", Plastic Man is shown to have some weakness to extreme heat (intense heat vision attack from a Martian) and was temporarily melted. Plastic Man's molecules can also be scrambled using ultrasonic wave distortions.
  • Vulnerability to Chemical Solvents: Plastic Man loses his integrity when exposed to solvents such as acetone.
