~ Meliodas

Meliodas is the main protagonist of the manga Nanatsu no Taizai, also known as The Seven Deadly Sins, written by Nakaba Suzuki.

Background[]

Meliodas is a demon that has lived for thousands of years. Many years in the past, he lived in the Kingdom of Danafor, and was even a knight there. However, when his lover Liz was killed, Meliodas' wrath consumed him and he destroyed the entire kingdom in a rage. After that, Meliodas formed the Seven Deadly Sins, a group of seven criminals who would serve as knights under Meliodas' leadership. Unfortunately, the Sins were framed for the murder of the knights' grandmaster and were forced to go on the run, Meliodas going into hiding and opening up a bar. One day, the princess of the kingdom, Elizabeth, came into Meliodas' bar in hopes of finding the Seven Deadly Sins and stopping a plot by the knights to send the kingdom into war. Meliodas revealed himself to Elizabeth as the group's leader and agreed to help her find the other Sins.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Demon/Demonic Biology: Meliodas is a high-level demon and can access his demonic biology to give himself a boost in physical ability and various other advantages. Meliodas can activate and deactivate his demon mark at will. At night, his magic power increases.
    • Assault Mode: This state is reached when Meliodas unleashes his demon powers to the fullest, achieving immense powers. This form also allows Meliodas to access his full power. According to Melascula, back in the days when Meliodas was in command of the Ten Commandments, even they were in fear of him while in this mode. The drawback is that it temporarily robs Meliodas of all his feeling and emotions, causing him to revert to how he was before he betrayed the Demon Clan.
    • Power of Darkness: As part of his demon biology, Meliodas can generate solid darkness from his body which he can manipulate and shape as well as project outward from himself. He can use this black matter for a variety of offensive, defensive, and supplementary purposes. One of Meliodas' favored attacks is to create large pillars of darkness energy.
      • Enhanced Durability: Demons can use their black matter as a thin but powerful layer of armor to enhance their defensive capability.
      • Flight: When the substance covers his body, he can use it to manifest wings and fly.
      • Self Healing: Demons can use the dark substance to pull their bodies back together, mend burn injuries, etc. However, they cannot regenerate destroyed hearts, and damage stays with the demon despite the wound being healed. This has been shown to mean that powerful enough attacks cannot be regenerated by a weaker demon, and they will eventually run out of enough energy and not be able to continue regenerating. Demon blood has also shown to possess potent regenerative properties, demonstrated when Fraudrin (through Dreyfus) regenerates Gray Demon Hendrickson from just a head, half a torso, and an arm.
      • Weapon Creation: The black matter can be used to form various offensive constructs such as large claws or weapons. These constructs enhance melee attacks a considerable amount.
      • Sealing: By using his Darkness power, Meliodas is capable of sealing someone during a very long period of time.
    • Immortality Curse: Meliodas was cursed with a type of immortality by the Demon King. He doesn't age physically, and every time he dies his soul enters Purgatory, where the Demon King eats some of his emotions, resulting in an increase in power for Meliodas. His soul then returns to his body and he revives, more powerful than when he died. It is important to note, however, that the revival process takes about a month to complete and so is inapplicable in most combat scenarios.
    • Sensing: High-level demons can sense magic energy from considerable distances away, hundreds of miles.
    • Soul Extraction and Absorption: Demons can extract souls and absorb them to restore their magic power as well as gain the knowledge of their victim. Both lesser demons and high-level demons have been shown extracting many souls at once from a distance, although some seem to prefer using touch to extract souls. When a soul is eaten it is completely destroyed, removing the victim from the cycle of reincarnation. It is important to note that Meliodas, as the good protagonist, has not used this ability.
    • Telepathy: Like several other high-level demons, Meliodas has displayed basic telepathy. He spoke directly to Dreyfus, who was being possessed by Fraudrin, and momentarily helped him regain his senses, and he guarded his mind against Drole's Magical Eye.
  • Commandment: As the former leader of the Ten Commandments, Meliodas was the original wielder of the Commandment of Love, which was bestowed upon him by the Demon King. Those who would stand before him with hatred in their hearts will be rendered powerless to harm or inflict damage on anyone else. To ally himself with the Goddess Clan, he willingly abandoned his Commandment during his betrayal of the Demon Clan. Due to Gowther's forbidden spell, the Demon King gave the Commandment to his supposed second son: Estarossa, who was Mael turned into a Demon due to the Commandment given to him and thus making it look like the former killed the latter. After completing the ritual to become Demon King via absorption of all the Commandments, Meliodas held all ten Commandments but upon forcing the Demon King out of his body, the Commandments were also forced out. After returning to his Assault Mode, Meliodas absorbed five of the ten Commandments into himself in order to gain power in the same realm as the Demon King.
    • Pacifism: Anyone who kills in Meliodas' presence will have their remaining lifetime stolen from them, aging rapidly to death.
    • Patience: The effects of its curse are currently unknown.
    • Piety: Anyone who turns their back on Meliodas to flee will be treated as though they committed an act of "treachery" against him, forcing them into obedience to the Demon King and by extension Meliodas himself.
    • Repose: The effects of its curse are currently unknown.
    • Selflessness: Those with feelings of greed or selfishness lose their memories, emotions, and sense of self.
  • Admonition: Meliodas can extract the commandments of others, summon them at will, and absorb them into himself.
  • Full Counter: This ability allows Meliodas to reflect magic attacks aimed at him, back at the enemy, but with much greater power; therefore, the stronger the opponent's powers are, the rebound becomes. A prime drawback is that Meliodas cannot initiate attacks himself. He is also incapable of reflecting attacks if the opponent does not allow him to read the timing/nature of their attacks. Physical, indirect, and continuous attacks can also not be reflected. The Demon King stated that the technique is merely an imitation of Chandler's technique and that his original magic power is something different.
    • Counter Vanish: Rather than reflecting an attack, Meliodas can disperse it, nullifying it. He used his palm to do it rather than his sword, although there is no indication that he has to use his palm.
    • Revenge Counter: Meliodas lowers his magic power so that he can take as much damage as he can handle. After he has "charged" himself with enough damage he returns all of it in a single massive energy attack aimed directly at his opponent. It is shown to be his last resort.
  • Hellblaze: A mysterious ability displayed by Meliodas that allows him to generate black flames. The technique also has the additional effect of nullifying an immortal's regeneration, as shown when he used it against Ban.
    • Divine Slayer: One of Meliodas' more powerful techniques that requires him to heighten his senses and power to their limit. He coats his sword in black flames and unleashes a large slash of fire at his target.
    • Divine 1,000 Slices: A derivative technique of Divine Slayer (the two are written the same in Japanese) Meliodas releases an aura of purgatory fire around his entire body and charges his opponent, quickly slicing them repeatedly.
    • Trillion Dark: Meliodas launches a barrage of small spheres of high concentrated darkness at the opponent.
  • Kami Chigiri: Meliodas cuts his opponent with his sword a total of a thousand times in an instant.
  • Shiden Issen: Meliodas slashes mulitple opponents several times with his sword in an instant.
  • Dark Prominence: Meliodas infuses his sword with the power of darkness and performs a powerful slash.

Equipment[]

  • Giant Broad Sword: Meliodas used this sword in the Holy War 3,000 years ago, also used it when he was the leader of the Ten Commandments. The sword is at least twice the size of Meliodas. It was broken in the battle Meliodas and the goddess Elizabeth fought and lost against the Demon King and the Supreme Deity. The sword did not show any traits of being able to use an ability like a Sacred Treasure.
  • Dragon Handle: Meliodas used this broken sword in conjunction with Full Counter. The sword also appears to have abilities of its own and is one of the keys to the Coffin of Eternal Darkness.
  • Liz's Sword: Once Meliodas regained his lover's sword, Liz, Meliodas started using it after his Dragon Handle was stolen. It also works in conjunction with Full Counter. It was broken during Meliodas' fight with an Albion.
  • Lostvayne: As a member of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas possesses a Sacred Treasure. Lostvayne is a "demon-splitting sword" which he sold at a pawn shop in Camelot for money to fund the Boar Hat 10 years ago. It is later returned to him by Merlin who is revealed to have purchased the sword and kept it safe all this time. Its ability Jitsuzo Bunshin is compatible with Meliodas' Full Counter allowing him to use it as much more dangerous levels.
    • Physical Clone: Lostvayne allows Meliodas to make physical clones of himself. The number of clones determines the power level of each one. For instance, a single clone has half of Meliodas' power level, and that halved power level is divided evenly among each individual clone. For instance, four clones would each have one-eighth the power level of the original Meliodas. The clones can fight on Meliodas' behalf, serve as distractions, as well as use Full Counter. Note that Meliodas is not weakened at all by making clones.
  • Bone Sword: In Purgatory, Meliodas' emotions created a sword, made with the bones of the indigenous species, with a single-edged long blade. The blade is compatible with Meliodas' Full Counter.

Alternate Forms[]

Demon Marks/Demon Form[]

When Meliodas gets angry enough, he can tap into his demonic powers, forming a black mark on his forehead and giving him a boost to his strength, speed, and durability. As he gets angrier, the black mark spreads until it covers more and more of his body, his power increasing as the mark spreads. When the mark spreads, Meliodas can manipulate the markings to form weapons, wings for flight, use it as armour, reattach lost limbs, and even fire it as a ranged blast of dark matter that can obliterate a whole kingdom at full power. However, the more the mark spreads, the more Meliodas starts acting on instinct instead of rational thought.

Weaknesses[]

  • Full Counter has Flaws: Full Counter can't be used against ordinary punches and kicks, or indirect attacks, and Meliodas is unable to attack while using it.
  • Holds Back: Meliodas holds back a lot, mostly to avoid doing something like destroying Danafor again. He doesn't like to use his full demonic power, and will only use his demon powers in short bursts if he has to.
  • Demon Form Acts on Instinct: Meliodas' demon form has shown to act on instinct instead of strategy, but after regaining his full power, Meliodas seems to have overcome this.
  • Assault Mode causes him to lose his emotions and revert to the way he was before betraying the Demon Clan until after it wears off.

Fun Facts[]

  • Meliodas is named after the father of Tristan from Arthurian legend.
