King Sombra is one of the secondary antagonists of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. He is a tyrannical unicorn and the former ruler of the Crystal Empire who is bent on reconquering the empire and later taking over all of Equestria.
Background[]
A thousand years ago, King Sombra took over the Crystal Empire but was banished into the frozen north. Before his banishment, King Sombra put a curse on the Crystal Empire which made it vanish into thin air. When the Empire returned, so did Sombra, who attempted to retake it, only to be defeated by Spike, Princess Cadance, and the Crystal Ponies' use of the Crystal Heart.
Eventually, he was resurrected by the demonic ram sorcerer Grogar (Who was in actually Discord in disguise) to join his team of villains so they can conquer Equestria together. However, Sombra refused to join the team and he went out to conquer Equestria on his own. He managed to destroy the Tree and Elements of Harmony and succeeded in conquering Ponyville and Canterlot. However, he was defeated once again by the Mane Six.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Mind Control: Sombra has two methods of putting others under his control. The first is to summon mind control helmets and send them flying at his foes to have them be placed on their heads. The second is to shoot magic and have it infect them through their eyes. His mind control is so strong, that not even Twilight was able to overcome it.
- Fear Manipulation: Sombra can cast a spell on his foes that leaves them trapped in their own mind, experiencing their greatest fear.
- Smoke Form: Sombra can turn into smoke, granting him intangibility, flight, and resistance to magic.
- Crystal Prison: Sombra can trap people in a cage of sorts made entirely out of crystals, which passively nullifies magic. He uses this to keep the Mane 6 subdued after he destroys the Tree of Harmony.
- Telekinesis: Sombra is capable of levitation magic, though he has not displayed the ability to lift heavy objects
- Kingdom Banishment: Upon his original defeat at the hands of Celestia and Luna, Sombra cursed the entire Crystal Empire to disappear for a thousand years.
- Anti-Magic Crystals: Sombra's dark magic is capable of planting small anti-magic crystals that block and repel magic.
- Survivability: His corporeal form exploded leaving nothing but his horn and he survived, though in a weaker state. After an application of healing magic, he was back to full power.
- Corruption Magic: Sombra can remotely spread darkness and dark crystals that weakened a city-wide force field in minutes.
- Dark Crystals: Sombra can produce razor sharp crystals from the ground half a city away and cancel out teleportation attempts.

- Manipulated Twilight and Spike's sight and senses in order to make them perceive their greatest fears;
- Knew how to properly hide the Crystal Heart from all in such a good way it took Twilight in order to figure it out.
- Was still able to outsmart Twilight and would've won if Spike did not step in on two separate occasions.
- Was restored by "Grogar" to join his team of villains to conquer Equestria.
- Destroyed the Tree and Elements of Harmony.

Weaknesses[]
- Highly overconfident and tends to underestimate his opponents.
- Has trouble thinking on the spot if his plans fail, not really having backup plans (threw a fit when the Mane 6 were still able to use the power of friendship even after he destroyed the Elements of Harmony).
- Can be destroyed with the Crystal Heart.
- Is weak to magic that is fueled by love, joy, and other such positive emotions.
- Was unable to penetrate Princess Cadance's magical love barrier and was destroyed by the Crystal Heart, an artifact powered by positive emotions.
- After his revival, his destruction came from magic powered by the six ponies' friendship, which he was unable to overpower either.
