Jean Grey (Earth-30847) from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Fate of Two Worlds 0001

Background[]

Jean Grey’s story is tragically similar to many mutants on earth. A normal childhood, loving parents, siblings and friends to play with, and then her powers awaken. In this instance, she was merely 10 years old and playing with her best friend, who was hit by a car. The stress of this accident awakened the latent telepathic powers supplied by her X-Gene, which caused Jean’s mind to link with her dying friend. The stress of this event caused Jean to essentially shut down, unable to control her powers and terrified of what she had become. Luckily, her parents called in Charles Xavier, who took her in under his wing, like a telepathic protégé of sorts. Xavier then blocked off her telepathic abilities temporarily until she matured enough to handle them, as he trained her to use her abilities telekinetically instead. Eventually her parents enlisted Jean into a small private school Xavier was running, and her life would never be the same.

Jean is an original X-Man, she showed up in the very first Uncanny X Men #1 and was a part of the original five-man team, alongside her future hubby Scott Summers. The team's resident mind-over-matter member, she quickly hit her stride and was a key player in their early adventures. Years passed, and eventually Xavier removed the psionic barriers he placed in her mind, Jean began dating Cyclops, graduated from the academy, and generally found life to be working out for her. But as always, all of this changed, when Jean and other mutants were captured by Steven Lang, the creator of the Sentinels, and imprisoned on his space station. A successful rescue was staged, but as the X-Men began their trip back to Earth, a solar flare assaulted the ship with cosmic rays. As the cockpit was unguarded from this radiation, someone had to make the sacrifice to pilot the ship safely back down to Earth. While her telekinetic abilities were able to protect her for some time, eventually the cosmic radiation became too great, and Jean began to die.

Except… she didn't. Because as she began to telepathically call for help, for anyone to come save her, Jean’s prayers were answered by the Phoenix. A cosmic entity representing life and rebirth in the Marvel omniverse. The Phoenix offered Jean a chance to live, one she gladly took, and the ship ultimately crashed safely in Jamaica Bay. And the X-Men and Marvel universe would never be the same again.

The Phoenix Force is the embodiment of all life and psionic energy in the Marvel multiverse, representing the idea of ‘rebirth’ and ‘resurrection’. During a spacefaring mission, the X-Men found themselves exposed to it, and it took up residence inside Jean, using her as a host. Acting like a symbiote of sorts at first, it drastically increased Jean’s power to cosmic levels, but slowly corrupted her and drove her mad.

This culminated when Jean/The Phoenix Force, now simply together as Phoenix, destroyed an entire star - one that had a civilized planet orbiting it. Realizing what she had done, Jean heroically sacrificed herself, pleading with her team to kill her before she could cause any more harm.

…except that wasn’t really Jean. It was the Phoenix Force pretending to be her. And then the real Jean came back and merged with the Force again. Comics, man. Fortunately, after extended time together and several convoluted plotlines, the inverse of the first time happened. Jean’s bubbly attitude actually rubbed off on the Phoenix Force, making it more… well, not quite docile, but cooperative perhaps. It was a lot less interested in destroying planets at least, and it and Jean bonded once more as a genuine force for good with Jean in control of both of their full powers. And while the Phoenix has hopped between a few different hosts, Jean Grey always has and always will rise from the ashes to become the Phoenix.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Empathy: On many occasions, Jean has shown to have incredibly strong empathic powers that enable her to control, manipulate and alter the feelings, sensations, and emotions of others. It is because of her empathic abilities that the almighty Phoenix Force had chosen her as its rightful human host. In other versions, she had not been shown possessing any types of empathic abilities except for telekinesis and telepathy.
  • Telepathy: Jean is able to read thoughts, project and broadcast her own thoughts, as well as interact with, affect and even manipulate the minds of humans and animals with higher order intelligence (such as dolphins, ravens or dogs). The range at which she can perform these feats is greatly increased while she is accessing the Phoenix Force. Since her resurrection, her range has naturally increased, having demonstrated the ability to link with every mutant mind on Krakoa, and reach out to all active members of the X-Men around the world. While in his mind, she was even able to force Nate Grey to experience all the suffering she caused while 'one with the Phoenix'. During her time in the future, she displayed advanced telepathic skills after being tutored by Kitty Pryde, such as cloaking herself and Scott Summers from even the most powerful of the future X-Mens' telepaths. She was also able to overpower Xorn (her future self), although the latter claimed that she was holding back during the altercation. However, the magnitude of this achievement is shown by the fact that even the combined might of the Stepford Cuckoos and Emma Frost was insufficient to defeat Xorn. She was also able to invade the mind of the primordial symbiote God Knull, and has bypassed the telepathic shielding of Juggernaut's helmet. Her telepathy is of such magnitude that she was also able to easily overpower Nightmare, a powerful psychic demon in his own right. After her absorption of Psylocke's specialized telepathy, Jean's own telepathic skill and power was increased to a level at which she could create psionic firebirds capable of inflicting mental and physical damage. However, this enhanced telepathy came at the temporary cost of her telekinesis. She has demonstrated the following specialized uses:
    • Telepathic Defense: She can manifest her telepathy in a number of defensive ways.
      • Telepathic Cloak: She can mask her presence and the use of her abilities from being detected by other psions and Cerebro-type devises. She can extend these defenses to others around her as well. Cloaking via telepathy is not perfect and powerful psis may notice and 'see' through this ability.
      • Cloak Mind: Ability to rearrange the "mental engrams" of mutants so their distinctive mutant thought patterns cannot be detected by Cerebro-type devises or by other telepaths.
      • Psychic Shield: Ability to erect a psychic shield for protection of herself and the minds of others.
      • Illusion Creation: She can create realistic telepathic illusions and cause people to experience events which are not actually occurring. Her illusions can also inflect pain on others, making them near flawless. This was later proven when Karnak took 3 days to find a flaw in one of her mindscapes.
      • Telepathic Camouflage: She can alter the apparent physical appearance of herself and other people by altering the perceptions of those around her. This can go so far as to make other people believe that the camouflaged people are not there (invisible). A limit, if one exists, is only imposed by the number of people she is trying to fool, not the number of people she is camouflaging.
    • Telepathic Manipulation: She can manipulate other people's minds easily, achieving a variety of effects.
      • Memory Manipulation: She can implant, restore or alter the memory of others.
        • Memory Erasure: She can erase any awareness of particular memories or cause total amnesia.
      • Mind Control: She can control the thoughts and actions of others.
        • Mind Possession: She can possess the mind of another and use that being's body as her own.
      • Personality Alteration: She can alter the minds of others by force of will, thus permanently changing their personality partially or entirely.
      • Mental Paralysis: She can induce temporary mental or physical paralysis.
      • Mind Transferal: She can transfer both her mind and powers into other host bodies if her own physical body was somehow killed.
      • Heal Trauma: She has the ability to erase a person's memories and to heal mental trauma through "psychic surgery", as well as the power to stimulate or deaden the pain and pleasure centers in a person's brain.
      • Mental Sedating: Can telepathically "sedate" her victims so that, if already rendered unconscious, they remain so for as long as she continues to "sedate" them.
      • Power Amplification: She can increase the speed of neural signals in the brain, which could increase another mutant's powers to incredible levels, but the effect was only temporary.
      • Power Negation: Ability to place "psychic inhibitors" in the minds of mutant adversaries to prevent them from using their powers.
      • Mind Link: She can bond others' minds allowing them to communicate telepathically between them.
      • Inter-Dimensional Telepathy: Jean was able to communicate with Cable while he was in the dimension of Otherworld, something Xavier thought was impossible to do.
    • Psychic Blasts: She can project psychic force bolts which have no physical effects, but which can affect a victim's mind, causing them pain, knocking them unconsciousness or turning the victim "brain-dead".
    • Astral Projection: She can project her astral form from her body onto the Astral Plane or the physical plane. In the physical plane she can travel in astral form over vast distances. In the astral plane, she can mentally create psionic objects and manipulate the aspects of her environment. She can communicate with others astrally through her own will, or through contact with the thoughts and memories of others through time.
    • Temporal Telepathy: Jean has been shown to be able to read, control and track minds through time, allowing her to affect events in the past, as well as sending her consciousness as well as Wolverine's through time.
    • Mental Detection: She can sense the presence of another superhuman mutant within a small but as yet undefined radius of herself by perceiving the distinctive mental radiations emitted by such a being.
  • Telekinesis: By projecting her psychokinetic energy outwards into the physical world, Jean Grey is able to levitate objects, propel or manipulate them however she wishes, lift herself and move through the air to simulate flight, stimulate individual molecules to create heat, generate concussive force as blasts or bursts, and create protective shields. While she has access to the Phoenix Force, she is able to manipulate matter and energy on a sub-atomic scale using her telekinesis. She can even change her Phoenix clothes into a set of street clothes and lift multiple heavy objects at once without having any difficulties. After her resurrection her telekinetic abilities have vastly expanded enabling her to achieve incredible feats such as, throwing the new Sword Station into upper orbit,, pull Arakko through the External Gate with the help of Exodus, and even drags and traps the Hex Phebe Reginax underwater, which was shown to be larger than the Empire State Building.
    • Intuitive Aptitude: Through years of honing her telekinetic talents, She has demonstrated the ability to disassemble complex devices explosively (separating every last component, such as screws, nuts, circuit boards, etc.) and, just as quickly, easily assemble complex devices. This also has enabled her to even attain awareness and control over objects as small as individual electrons in an atom. For instance, She was able to removes all the spores spread by Cordycep Jones, feel and manipulate air molecules, telekinetically control nanites  and blood within an individual's body.
    • Psychic Flames: Even without the Phoenix Force, Jean has been shown to psychokinetically control and influence flames composed of psychic energy to a certain extent. She can also use her telekinesis to manifest psychic firebird, whose claws could inflict both physical and mental damage.
    • Force Field: She can create a telekinetic field to either shield her and her teammates or use it to lift multiple heavy objects at her enemy. Her telekinetic force-fields are strong enough to defend herself against the flames of the Phoenix Force, holds apart the core of the Progenitor, and protect her from Captain Marvel's Binary Form.
      • Tactile Telekinesis: She has the power to utilize a personal force field of telekinetic energy.
    • Concussive Blasts: She is able to release her telekinetic energies as powerful blast beams directed from her brain that could apparently affect matter with concussive and destructive force.
    • Molecular Manipulation and Transmutation: She can manipulate and transmute matter on a molecular and sub-atomic level (e.g., turning wood into gold, plant into crystal, alter the clothing of herself and others, and cause physical bodies to disintegrate by altering their molecular structure, etc).
      • Disintegration: Jean Grey has been shown, on numerous occasions, to break down, tear apart, and disintegrate objects and matter on a molecular level. For example, when she easily disintegrates a group of Tele-floronic beings who possessed regenerative abilities.
    • Telekinetic Weapons: She can create psionic weapons and constructs out of psychic energy that damage a target either physically, mentally or both in some point. The versatility of this ability was greatly enhanced after training with Psylocke.
    • Temporal Telekinesis: Jean has been able to use her telekinetic abilities through time by projecting her astral form in different points in the timestream.
  • Psychic Siphoning: Jean is able to drain others' psychic energy to enhance her psionic powers. The boost she can provide to herself depends on the psychic energy within her enemies, explaining the fact that she is rarely seen using this power. The greatest feat she has performed after using this ability was when she knocked Galactus out with a blast of psychic energy stolen from him, the Phoenix, Terrax, and an unknown alien species. She also used this ability to reconstruct her body after being consumed by a Poison, and to kill the Poison Queen.
    • Telekinetic Aura: She can surround her body with psychic energy to protect herself from harm. She survived a high-speed collision from Gladiator, which would have normally resulted with her death.
    • Psychic Resistance: She can protect herself from other telepaths by draining the psychic energy that they normally use. This also prevents her psyche from complete erasure after the Poisons took her over.
    • Psychic Entity Physiology: Jean manages to ascend her physical body to become a being of pure psionic force, similar to Nate Grey from the age of Apocalypse. In this form she is a material energy being who could regain her physical form even after having been consumed by a Poison, using this feature to break free of her corporeal prison and reconstruct her physical body from scratch.
    • Cosmic-Level Telekinetic Blast: She can create a blast of psychic energy powerful enough to affect Cosmic Beings as Galactus.
    • Psionic Bolt Generation: She can transform psychic energy into bolts of energy.
    • Psychic Firebird: She can manifest her telekinesis and telepathy, in unison, as a firebird made of psychic energy.
  • Self-Resurrection: Jean has been able to resurrect herself by either using her psychic powers or through her sheer force of will. Jean has been able to resurrect herself by reconstructing her body out of psionic energy after it was vaporized. Jean was even able to fully resurrect herself after being clinically dead and independent of the Phoenix Force after encasing herself in a glacier of ice.
  • Phoenix Force: As the favored and true avatar of the powerful Phoenix Force, Jean may greatly increase her powers by tapping into the omniversal life energies of those yet unborn. The Phoenix Force also allows its avatars to manifest additional powers, especially in terms of Jean as its "host, house, and self". Jean Grey is the strongest and complete host of Phoenix Force and as such, she is even capable of forcibly ripping it out of another host and forcing its status upon herself. They became the White Phoenix of the Crown and ruled over the omniverse in the white hot room.
    • Interstellar Travel: A Phoenix Force avatar can fly unaided through the vacuum of space and can travel interstellar distances faster than the speed of light.
    • Nigh Omnipotence: The Phoenix Force is practically omnipotent, however it is limited in undetermined and undefined ways as seems to suit its current mission/purpose. As the White Phoenix of the Crown, it was able to warp reality on a universal scale. This was not the result of divergence, but rather the effect of reality manipulation which changed history.
    • Future Life-Force Tap: The Phoenix Force can tap into the energy provided by life-force reserved for future generations, thus denying them existence. The Phoenix Force possesses limitless cosmic energy. With or without a host, it is one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe, capable of existing in any plane, time-line or dimensional existence.
      • Concussive Force Blasts: It can wield this energy to project beams of immense concussive force powerful enough to destroy whole planetary bodies.
      • Quantum Singularity: It can transmigrate throughout time and space by folding its energy back into itself, causing it to collapse akin to a black hole. It then reforms itself upon reaching its destination, much like the Phoenix of ancient myths.
      • Energy Absorption: It can directly absorb, manipulate, and fully control any type of energy such as Cyclops' ruby-red-colored optic blasts or the entire energy of a star, black hole, or even a whole galaxy. Jean, as the "One-True Phoenix", was shown to be able to activate and deactivate the mutations of other's with just the use of her psychic abilities.
      • Life-Force Control: The Phoenix Force can control and manipulate life and death itself, as such, it can take the "life energy" from something, rendering it "dead" or vice versa.
      • Soul Manipulation: The Phoenix is able to use its flames to burn others souls.
      • Psionic Nexus: As the nexus or center of all psionic energy throughout the cosmos, the host attains nigh-infinitely powerful mental abilities, including telepathy, empathy, and telekinesis, and often seeks out hosts who have psionic abilities (i.e. Nate Grey, Jean Grey-Summers, The White Queen, and The Cuckoos). When bonded with a host, the Phoenix Force vastly strengthens and amplifies all of their superhuman mutant powers and abilities to immeasurable and innumerable power levels that have been shown to be near unlimited such as the Phoenix's one-true host.
      • Matter Transmutation: It can manipulate and transmute matter on a subatomic level (e.g., turning wood to gold, stone to crystal, cause physical bodies to disintegrate, convert Homo mermanus to Homo superior, etc).
      • Cosmic Teleportation: It can teleport others across vast distances such as another planet or galaxy, and the vast vacuum of space itself or even an entire timeline all-together.
      • Disintegration Waves: It can consume and remove a near infinite amount of molecules per second.
      • Resurrection Force: It can resurrect anyone it wishes with its near infinite powers, as it is the embodiment of life and death itself. It could also bring itself back as well as its host (it has done this many times over in the form of Jean).
      • Immortality: The Phoenix Force is immortal and indestructible. It cannot die or be destroyed. After its "death" in Avengers vs. X-Men it was said to be destroyed, but, as it has happened many times, the entity never truly died. It forms itself in a cosmic egg in the White Hot Room and stays in there until it is ready to come out. Some hosts get true immortality, but other get it from never aging or needing food, water, and oxygen to breath and, if they were killed, the Phoenix Force would bring him or her back to life.
      • Cosmic Pyrokinesis: It can create 'cosmic' flames under any conditions even the impossible ones such as vacuum space or underwater. These flames do not require oxygen to burn, and burn so intensely that matter is consumed without by-products such as ash. It has perfect control over these flames, and they only consume what it wills. These flames are shown to be able to burn even underwater . Typically they manifest as a raptor or part of a raptor such as a claw or wings, in the case of an avatar. It is unclear whether these flames are an extension of its powerful psionic abilities or a literal punctuation to its purpose to 'burn away what doesn't work.
      • Temporal Manipulation: The Phoenix Force can manipulate the past, present, and future across large temporal distances and with a profound knowledge of the causal effect her actions will have. It may be the case that time as a concept doesn't apply to the White Hot Room. it has only been shown when Jean Grey as the White Phoenix of The Crown held her universe in the palm of her hands, possessing the infinite power to write what she would as the "One True Phoenix" in any timeline, using to save her timeline from becoming a horrible future, altering the memories of everyone in reality itself in the process.
      • Atmokinesis: The Phoenix Force is capable of manipulating and creating cosmic weather. It can create cosmic storms, solar flares, geomagnetic storms, cosmic rays, coronal mass ejection and black holes.
      • Existence Mastery: It possesses total control over the entire existence as shown by The White Phoenix of the Crown (c.f. The White Hot Room). It can warp the reality, bring anything into existence, freely manipulate all existing things, and return them to nothingness when their purpose is extinguished.
    • Its immeasurable cosmic powers and abilities appear to be at their strongest and most powerful when bonded to Jean Grey ("the One-True Phoenix" who is completely compatible with the entity, possessing incredibly strong and powerful levels of telepathic, empathic, and telekinetic godhood status abilities, complete control and manipulation over the realms of matter, energy, space, time, existence and thought), as the two have a strange, profound connection to each other (Jean is the closest thing the Force has to physical form as “their souls were cut from the same cloth”). It has yet to explain how Jean is "the true phoenix" and why, however, it has been theorized that the Phoenix is the true manifestation of Jean Grey’s psychic abilities. Like Jean Grey, the Phoenix used telepathy and telekinesis, but at a much, much greater limitless power levels (unlimited as White Phoenix). She was able to rearrange the molecular structure of matter and fly at high hypersonic speeds while inside a planetary body. Using the Phoenix Force, she could travel through hyperspace and destroy Shi'ar battle cruisers with little effort.
  • Excellent Combatant: Jean excels at astral combat. She maintained a psychic link to Cyclops for a number of years. She possessed the memories of the Phoenix duplicate of her as well as those of Madelyne Pryor-Summers, her clone, and is thus an expert pilot. Jean has shown some proficiency in hand-to-hand and armed, non-psionic combat; the extent of this is unknown as she prefers to utilize her telekinesis and telepathy during battle. She was able to defeat a group of ninjas with the only use of telekinetic weapons. She has a college education from Metro College.

Alternate Forms[]

Dark Phoenix[]

Even though the Phoenix Force gives a lot of power to its host, if the host gives in to the Phoenix’s corruption, the Dark Phoenix will take shape. Once the host gives their mind to the Phoenix, they will become obsessed with nothing more than destruction and consumption and want to destroy everything. On top of obviously being far more violent and destructive compared to their normal state, it’s suggested that the Phoenix’s powers increase in this form, as they are not tempered by joy or love. Note that, rather infamously, the Phoenix who appeared in the Dark Phoenix saga was retconned to be the Phoenix Force entity itself taking on Jean’s form and memories. As said above, the Phoenix manifesting on its own is likely weaker than it is with a host, and this retcon has subsequently had tons of retcons on top of it as well, so any feat the Dark Phoenix performs in this saga should be applicable to Jean as well.

White Phoenix of The Crown[]

  • Nigh-Omnipotence (all powerful form of the Phoenix): No hosts can access the full powers of the Phoenix except Jean Grey. Only those who have a very strong connection can do so, with the strongest known level being the White Phoenix of the Crown, which thus far only Jean Grey have been shown to achieve, because she is completely compatible with the Phoenix Force.

Weaknesses[]

  • Phoenix Force:
    • Jean Grey: Jean Grey is one of the few weaknesses of the Phoenix. The Phoenix has been shown to be mentally and physically incapable of harming Jean Grey, and Jean has even been able to have full control of the Phoenix Force and The White Hot Room, without being the host, and she has even been able to forcibly rip the Phoenix out of Emma Frost against the Phoenix’s will.
    • Vulnerability of Host: While the Phoenix Force gives its host incredible strength and durability, neither is infinite. A long battle can potentially exhaust the host, leaving the host vulnerable to attack.
    • Chaos Magic: When Cyclops was possessed by the Phoenix, he was harmed when he touched Scarlet Witch. Emma Frost (also Phoenix-possessed) suffered when she telepathically detected Wanda's presence, but as the Phoenix Five gained more portions it becomes less effective, becoming ineffective when Wanda tried to hurt Cyclops by herself.
    • Iron Fist: The dragon, Shou-Lao was able to hurt Cyclops when he was possessed by Phoenix. It was claimed by the Watcher that the dragon once beat the Phoenix, but there is no evidence to show that. An Iron Fist named Fongji Wu used the powers of the dragon to help tame the Phoenix and master its powers. It is unknown if the power proves less effective as the Phoenix Five gained more portions of Phoenix.
    • Storms (Emotional Vulnerability): Jane Foster speculated that the Phoenix is afraid of the God Tempest inside Mjolnir, though the Phoenix denied this. It turned out that the Phoenix does have a weakness to storms, but an emotional one. Firehair was a Phoenix host from 1,000,000 BC who fell in love with Odin. Odin tried to forcibly marry her and she left him. For the sake of the Earth, she plotted with Gaea to conceive a child with Odin: Thor. However, right after Gaea gave birth to Thor, he was killed by Laufey. Phoenix saved him and brought him back to life, and she views him as her son. Whenever Thor cried, he made storms, and so from then on, the Phoenix avoided storms because the sound of thunder was too much to bear. However, the actual extent of this weakness is debatable, given the Phoenix has showed no such aversion to storms during its time impersonating Jean Grey, during fights with Thor, or while inhabiting any other hosts.
    • Despite these weaknesses the Phoenix Force itself has never really felt it or ever even said it hurts. It only affects it host and even if the Phoenix is in control only the host feels pain, but its weakness is its control over its host. Even if the host is destroyed, the Phoenix Force can resurrect it.

Fun Facts[]

  • Jean Grey appeared as Phoenix in the 10th season of the popular web series DEATH BATTLE! where she fought against Raven and lost.
