Homelander is the central antagonist of the highly controversial adult comic-book series The Boys.

Background[]

Raised by scientists as an experiment in a laboratory, the infant simply referred to as "John" was molded from childhood to be the perfect American superhero, having been enhanced by a super serum known as Compound V and subjected to hours of viewing images of the American flag, Jesus Christ, and baseball. But the lack of affection in his life and Vought stripping him of individuality turned him into an arrogant, aggressive, and spiteful human with little regard for anyone but himself. Once grown up, John was given the identity of "Homelander" and was appointed as the leader of the superhero team, The Seven. While he puts on a friendly, approachable facade for the public eye, Homelander only cares about being the best, and stamping out competition of any kind, which includes the vigilante group determined to bring about his and Vought's downfall, The Boys.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Compound V: An special alchemical “super serum” designed to enhance the human body and mind to around 15-20 times stronger normally. Created by Jonah Vogelbaum during both World Wars, when injected into normal humans it gives them superpowers whilst also making their poop blue. When injected or inhaled by Supes, it increases their power even further, which Homelander has taken advantage of in the past.
    • Supe Physiology: Despite what you might’ve heard from Vought’s marketing team, the so-called “super-abled” individuals named “The Supes” are not God’s own handpicked Chosen Ones, but instead regular children medicated with Compound V that leads them to develop these superpowers as well as increasing their lifespan. The strength of the acquired superpower will depend on the dosage given, but even Supes far from Homelander’s level were able to shrug off high-caliber bullets and intense blunt force trauma without being worse for wear. As Vought’s most expensive investment, Homelander’s array of abilities, strength, speed and stamina is unmatched within the community.
    • Flight: Homelander’s favorite way of getting to (or sometimes escaping from) the crime scene is by flying. He can levitate or propel himself forward at high speeds, covering vast distances in a matter of seconds, fast enough to catch up to a plane or even a private jet.
    • Heat Vision: Not being too big a fan of putting effort or wasting energy, Homelander instead prefers to beam and burn his problems away with eye lasers. This has been his go-to ever since he was born. And who can blame him? They’re so very effective, they can melt or explode a gun right in the crook’s hand, slice a jet in two with a glance, give another high-tier Supe a third-degree burn, and effortlessly mow down any person who happens to be brave or stupid enough to stand in his way.
    • X-Ray Vision: Does exactly what it says on the tin and is precise enough for him to see a fuel line of a helicopter. Or, for example, being so infatuated with his boss to spy on her through the wall. Or to check on Queen Maeve.
    • Enhanced Senses: Homelander possesses tremendous auditory awareness, allowing him to detect sounds up to 200,000 Hz or from miles away, whether it be an explosion, or an uncomfortable conversation he wasn’t supposed to hear but wanted to. He is even capable of detecting a person’s heartbeat, blood pressure and even the neurons firing in their brain with medical precision. He’s even able to literally sniff out a liar by the smell of his sweat, or differentiate emotions by a person’s scent.
    • Superhuman Voice: Homelander loves hearing himself talk, and he can ensure that you will hear him as well no matter where you are. He’s able to produce screams loud enough to rupture the ear drums of a dozen people around him.
    • Resurrection/Healing Factor: As stated before, Supes specifically have Compound V inside their brains to bring them to life in case they do indeed die (it should be noted that if their brains are destroyed, the regeneration will not work). On top of that, Homelander seems to possess a minor healing factor, as seen when he healed from Maeve's attack in a relatively short time-frame.
  • Gifted Intelligence: Despite being an emotionally stunted manchild, Homelander is still surprisingly cunning and able to manipulate those around him.
  • Skilled Combatant: Homelander was able to put up a fight against both Butcher and Soldier Boy, despite both men being ex-military and having years of combat experience. In Homelander was able to put up a fight against both Butcher and Soldier Boy, despite both men being ex-military and having years of combat experience. In his childhood, Homelander once fought against a huge man, indicating that Vought gave him some combat training at some point in his life. However due to his superior strength always giving him the advantage, Homelander never actually needed it and therefore has never improved his combat skills. Consequently, he has been overpowered by the weaker foes, such as Billy Butcher, Hughie Campbell and Soldier Boy, who were able to subdue him by working together, forcing him to flee. Homelander was also able to fight Maeve on even terms, though Maeve's superior fighting skills allowed her to hold her own, with Homelander having to resort more to his strength than his combat skills to overpower her.

Weaknesses[]

  • Absence of fulcrum: Homelander is unable to utilize his full superhuman strength if he lacks a fulcrum, as he explained to Queen Maeve. The reason for this is because he needs a solid surface and leverage to take full advantage of his power and without it he does not have anything to push his body against it.
  • Zinc: Homelander cannot see through zinc. This is shown when he is unable to identify Translucent's remains in zinc-lined box until it was opened.
  • Blunt Force/Limited Durability: Homelander can be wounded and killed by someone who is as strong as or stronger than him, such as in the case of Black Noir.
  • Love/Affectation: Homelander has one major weakness: He desperately seeks love and affection from the people around him, such as with Queen Maeve, Black Noir, Stormfront, Ryan & Becca Butcher and Soldier Boy. As well as all his fans who follow him.
  • Arrogance: Homelander's cockiness often gets the better of him, resulting in fits of rage and uncontrollable behavior.
