Gurren Lagann is main mecha of the anime series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Its main pilots are Simon the Digger, and Viral.
Backstory[]
In a world where humanity is forced to live underground by creatures called Beastmen, a young boy named Simon found two strange things while helping to expand his underground village; a small drill and a machine with a face on it. Before he could show anyone, Simon's friend and "bro", Kamina, tried one of his many schemes to escape the underground village and reach the surface world. However, during this escape, a Gunman, one of the mecha that Beastmen use to attack humans who reach the surface, and a girl with a sniper rifle crashed into the village. Using the machine he found, which turned out to be a smaller Gunman that Kamina christened Lagann, Simon, Kamina, and the girl, Yoko, destroyed the Gunman and escaped to the surface world. Yoko decided to bring Kamina and Simon to her village, which often had to deal with Gunmen attacks. This led to Kamina hijacking his own Gunmen, which he named Gurren.
During a battle with Viral, a much more experienced Gunmen pilot, Kamina decided to try and combine Lagann and Gurren. Somehow, this succeeded, and the machine known as Gurren Lagann came to be. With the formation of Gurren Lagann, Simon and Kamina decided to take down the tyrannical Spiral King, who created the Beastmen to subject the humans to life underground.

- Spiral Power: An energy source that humans and other animals use to evolve, which happens to be the power source of Gurren Lagann. Simon can produce unlimited amounts of Spiral Power, and his output increases with his fighting spirit and determination.
- Drill Manipulation: Gurren Lagann's main offensive ability is forming drills on its body using Simon's Spiral Power. These drills vary in shape and size, and can be used as melee weapons, shields, or even missiles.
- Giga Drill Break: Gurren Lagann's signature finishing move, which has it throw its sunglasses at the opponent, pinning them in the air, before combining several smaller drills into a single massive drill and ramming it into the opponent. This move is usually a one-hit kill attack, and causes whatever it hits to explode. The Giga Drill can also be used to reflect energy attacks back at the person who fired them.
- Giga Drill Maximum: By forming multiple Giga Drills all over its body, Gurren Lagann can pierce multiple enemies surrounding it, or deflect several blasts coming at it at once.
- Assimilation: By piercing something mechanical with its drills, Gurren Lagann can integrate it into its system and make it stronger. This is what allows Gurren Lagann to form in the first place, with Lagann piercing Gurren with a drill to combine with it. It's also done this to Enki's helmet, which it stole and now wears, and the flying Gunman that forms the wings on its back.
- Regeneration: Gurren Lagann can use Simon's Spiral Power to immediately heal most minor damage done to it.
- Energy Manipulation: Simon can use his Spiral Power to fire blasts of energy from Gurren Lagann's drills, or create durable energy shields.
- Perceptual Teleportation: By focusing hard enough on something, Simon can use his Spiral Power to rip wormholes in the air and instantly warp Gurren Lagann to it.
- Drill Manipulation: Gurren Lagann's main offensive ability is forming drills on its body using Simon's Spiral Power. These drills vary in shape and size, and can be used as melee weapons, shields, or even missiles.
- Blazing Chariot Kick: When Gurren Lagann is falling towards something at terminal velocity, it can burst into flames for a blazing drop kick.
Equipment[]
- Sunglasses: A giant pair of sunglasses worn on Gurren Lagann's chest, which can be removed and used as a sword or boomerang.
- Wings: A pair of mechanical wings which were once an enemy Gunman, before being pierced by Gurren Lagann's drills and attached to its back to allow jet-powered flight. Gurren Lagann can remove and reattach these wings at will, and can even used them as a boomerang if needed.
Alternate Forms[]
- Arc-Gurren Lagann: By combining with the ship Arc-Gurren, Gurren Lagann can transform into the much larger Arc-Gurren Lagann. This form is powerful enough to easily destroy the Anti-Spiral's warships, and has many new abilities gained from fusing with the Arc-Gurren.
- Space-Time Shattering Burst Spinning Punch: By charging raw Spiral Power into its fist, Arc-Gurren Lagann can punch hard enough to tear through the fabric of space and time, sending any struck target into the resulting void.
- Arc-Gurren Lagann Giga Drill Break: Arc-Gurren Lagann's version of Gurren Lagann's signature finishing move. Its version was powerful enough to destroy Cathedral Lazengann's arm.
- Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann: By combining with the battleship Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren, Gurren Lagann can transform into the Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann, a mech that's around the size of the moon. Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann has various cannons and other weapons built into its body, which it obtained from the Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren. In this stage, Simon's Spiral Power output was compared to the birth of a galaxy.
- Gurren Boomerang: After combining the sunglasses on its chest and face, Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann throws them at the opponent like a boomerang.
- Finger Drills: Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann can form drills from its fingers to use like claws.
- Cannons: Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann contains hundreds of hidden cannons and missile launchers on its body. Each of these cannons can shoot a beam right through the space-time continuum, hitting the target regardless of their location and temporality.
- Super Galaxy Giga Drill Break: Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann's version of the Giga Drill Break. After combining the drills on its shoulders into a single, massive drill over its hand, Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann strikes with enough force to plow through battleships big enough to throw planets like pebbles.
