Gipsy Danger is a Mark-3 American Jaeger from the 2013 science fiction monster action film Pacific Rim.

Background[]

In August of 2013, San Francisco was devastated by a giant creature known as Trespasser. After its eventual defeat, more kaiju continued to appear. Nuclear weapons were effective in killing the first kaiju that surfaced, however it was decided that a new, more efficient method of destroying kaiju was needed. This lead to the creation of the Jaeger program. Two or more Rangers (pilots) link minds together in a process called Drifting, allowing them to fight the kaiju directly within a giant robotic body. On July 10, 2017, Gipsy Danger began service, piloted by Yancy and Raleigh Becket, but when Yancy was killed in a battle with the kaiju Knifehead in 2020, Raleigh piloted Gipsy long enough to reach the shores of Anchorage where the machine collapsed.

Traumatized by the death of his brother, Raleigh quit the Jaeger program as humanity came to the horrifying realization that even the Jaegers weren't good enough against the Kaiju. Following its costly victory, Gipsy was presumably returned to the Anchorage Shatterdome. The following year, in 2021, it was transported to Oblivion Bay, a Jaeger graveyard in Oakland, California. In 2023, Gipsy was removed from Oblivion Bay and returned to the Anchorage Shatterdome to undergo repairs as sanctioned by the Pan Pacific Defense Corps.

Gipsy underwent major reconstruction and refurbishment under the supervision of Mako Mori and Tendo Choi. Gipsy was re-introduced with new technology, a solid iron hull with no alloys, retractable chain swords, new cockpit and updates to the control interfaces to match recent tech upgrades by the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. Gipsy Danger had returned, and with a new partner for Raleigh to boot. Gipsy would go on to kill more kaiju along with other Jaegers until 2025, when it self-destructed to permanently close off the Breath as Raleigh and Mako escaped death in an escape pod.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Enhanced Strength: The massive strength of this Jaeger enables it to rip off Kaiju organs with little effort and wield oil tanker ships like swords. While it wasn't specified what kind of oil tanker it was, it could be assumed that it was a General Purpose tanker, the weight of which ranges from 10,000 to 24,999 tons deadweight.
  • Enhanced Mobility: Despite its size, Gipsy is very mobile, and is fully capable of running at a formidable speed. It can jump high in the air as well, with the jet thrusters on its back to further aid its running speed.
  • Enhanced Durability: Gipsy could tank getting smashed through several buildings, survive atmospheric reentry and getting thrown into the Hong Kong port by Leatherback. And during the confrontation with Knifehead, Gipsy had lost its left arm, its armor took several tears and it lost nearly half its head.
  • Aquatic Fighting: Gipsy Danger has demonstrated the ability to travel and fight underwater effectively.

Equipment[]

  • I-19 Plasmacaster: A cannon capable of firing multiple high-temperature biology-aware plasma projectiles. Located in forearm and are retractable.
  • Elbow Rockets: Used to punch things really hard.
  • Rear jets: Increases forward moving speed.
  • Jaeger A.I.: Gipsy Danger contains an artificial intelligence designed to monitor the conditions of the Jaeger and its pilots.
  • Nuclear Vortex Turbine: Gipsy Danger’s power system. It can be used to fire a high temperature blast at close-range that completely tore through Slattern, who had previously survived an underwater thermonuclear explosion. The reactor can be purged with enough force to send 1,980 ton Gipsy Danger upwards despite having gained momentum from a 30,000 foot fall, and can also be used by Gipsy Danger to self-detonate as a last resort.
  • Coolant: Gipsy can release the coolants used with its reactor as an improvised weapon, freezing anything close enough.
  • GD6 Chain Sword: Blades made of a steel-obsidan alloy located in each Gipsy's arms. Acting like a chain upon release, the segments can lock together to form a sword.

Feats[]

Strength[]

  • Lifted and tossed Leatherback,
  • Can rip out kaiju organs easily.
  • Dragged the half of a dead kaiju with one arm missing and a leg damaged.
  • Picked up a pacific cargo ship and used it as a bat.
  • Can cut through kaiju with its chain swords.
  • Its nuclear vortex tore through Slattern, while its self-destruction completely destroyed the Breach.
  • Smashed Otachi's tail to pieces after freezing it.
  • Dragged Slattern into the Breach with it.

Speed[]

  • Dodged Otachi's acid.
  • Ducked under Leatherback's arm.

Durability[]

  • Despite being amputated, getting impaled through the chest, and having the dominant pilot killed, Gipsy Danger was still capable of killing Knifehead, and operated until Raleigh could move it to shore.
  • Got thrown by Leatherback and got back up.
  • Got smashed through a building by Otachi.
  • Withstood the blast of an underwater nuclear explosion that killed a Category 4 kaiju and created a pocket of air easily over a thousand meters across.
  • Withstood the heat of reentry from 50,000 ft to 20,000ft.
  • After loosening shock absorbers and purging its reactor, it falls for around 20,000 ft (around 11 more seconds) before hitting the ground and survived.
  • Due to being powered by a nuclear reactor powering, Gipsy was not affected by an EMP attack strong enough to disable the only Mark-V Jaeger ever made and shut down power in the Shatterdome.
  • Is able to withstand underwater pressure when traversing below the Pacific Ocean.
  • Despite the heavy damage done to Gipsy during Operation Pitfall, managed to last long enough to drag and kill Slattern into the Breach with it.
  • Lost its right arm when it was suddenly ambushed by Raiju when fighting the triple Kaiju ambush.

Skill[]

  • Killed 9 kaiju before its destruction.
  • Fought off a three-Kaiju ambush with Striker Eureka during Operation Pitfall.
  • Saved Striker Eureka from Leatherback.
  • Fought and killed two Category 4 Kaiju, which together had defeated three Jaegers.
  • Managed to kill Knifehead despite taking horrific damage and losing one of its pilots.
  • Killed Raiju, and then finished off Slattern in Operation Pitfall.
  • When it entered the Breach, activated its self destruct sequence to destroy the Kaiju home world, which would close off the Breach permanently
  • Saved the inhabitants of Hong Kong from the double Kaiju attack.
  • One of the four remaining Jeagers when the Jeager program stopped receiving support from the United Nations.

Weaknesses[]

  • Almost unusable by a single pilot, unless highly skilled or extremely determined.
  • Use of its nuclear vortex leaves it almost entirely drained of power.
  • Can't handle multi-armed kaiju.
  • Prefers close-range fighting.
  • Fighting skills will be affected if one pilot latches onto a memory.
  • Gipsy will be rendered useless if its Conn-Pod is either destroyed or detached from its body.
  • Pilots will feel any damage inflicted on the Jaeger.
  • Solo piloting can be fatal for pilots.
  • Took heavy damage from Knifehead and was retired for a time.
  • Plasmacasters can't be fired underwater.
  • Being a pre-Mark IV Jaeger, the nuclear reactor was not initially designed with sufficient shielding to fully protect the pilots. The Rangers who are deployed in Gipsy are required to take Metharocin daily.
  • Kaiju blood is toxic, and although many Jaegers can cauterize wounds using heated blades, the GD6 Chain Sword cannot be used in such a way. This makes it’s use more of a last resort against kaiju.

Fun Facts[]

  • Gipsy Danger's "body language" was inspired by prized UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre.
  • According to Guillermo del Toro, the design team wanted Gipsy Danger to "feel like a classic, old gunslinger" (John Wayne) and designed its anatomy after that of a cowboy. del Toro also referenced tanker ships and art deco as an influence in Gipsy Danger's design. In particular, there were large flat areas with a lot of plating, with spots in between showing the intricacies of its inner workings.
