Giovanni is the ex-gym leader of Viridian City and the ex-leader of Team Rocket.

Giovanni is a Ground-type specialist who became the leader of Viridian City and he founded the underground crime group Team Rocket.

Giovanni's main source of power is through his Pokémon and they may vary through different versions of him, so this section is divided to four different parts: the Video games part, the Anime part, the Origins part and the Adventures part.

Giovanni uses many types of Pokémon through the times you meet him in the games and it can be hard to know if they are the same Pokémon or not. So to make this page as comprehensive as possible it will it be presumed that Giovanni used the same Pokémon unless it has a different ability or gender or if the levels doesn't make sense chronologically.

  • Onix: A male level 25 Onix with the ability Rock Head (nullifies the recoil from attack where the user receives recoil damaged). Giovanni used this Onix against red in Rocket Hideout. His moveset is:

    • Bind: A weak Normal-type attack that makes it unable for the target to escape and it continues to damaged the target some turns after.
    • Rage: A very weak physical Normal-type attack that raises the user's physical attack when it's attacked.
    • Harden: A move that raises the user's physical defense by 50%.
  • Rhyhorn: A level 37 male Rhyhorn with the ability Rock Head. Giovanni used this Pokémon against Red in Rocket hideout and ones again in Silph Co.. His moveset is:
    • Fury Attack: A weak Normal-type attack that attacks 2-5 per use.
    • Scary Face: A move that half the target's speed.
    • Stomp: A physical Normal-type attack that has a 30% chance to flinch the target.
    • Rock Blast: A weak rock-type attack that attacks 2-5 per use.
  • Kangaskhan: A level 35 Kangaskhan with the ability Early Bird (Pokémon with this ability wakes up faster from being put to sleep by an opponent). Giovanni used this Pokémon against Red in Rocket hideout and ones again in Silph Co.. Her moveset is:
    • Fake Out: A weak physical Normal-type attack that flinches the target and takes priority over normal moves. This move can only be used as the first move the user use.

    • Mega Punch: A physical Normal-type attack with no secondary effects.
    • Tail Whip: A move that lowers the target physical defense.
  • Rhyhorn: A level 45 male Rhyhorn with the ability Lighting Rod (redirects any Electric-type moves to the Pokémon with this ability and then recreates the energy to strengthen its special attack.). This is one of the Pokémon Giovanni use exclusively as a gym Pokémon. His moveset is:

  • Rhyhorn: This Rhyhorn has the same attributes expect it is level 50, and not 45.
  • Dugtrio: A level 42 male Dugtrio with the ability Sand Veil (Pokémon with this ability gets more evasive in sandstorm). This one of the Pokémon that he use exclusively in the Gym. His moveset is:
    • Slash: A physical Normal-type attack with a high chance of a critical hit
    • Sand Tomb: A weak Ground-type attack that makes it unable for the target to escape and it continues to damaged the target some turns after.
    • Mud-Slap: A weak special Ground-type attack lowers the target accuracy.

  • Kangaskhan: A level 40 Kangaskhan with the ability Scrappy (Pokémon with this ability can hit Ghost-type Pokémon with Normal-type and fighting-type attacks.) Her moveset is:

  • Rhyperior: A Rhyperior that hold a Liechi berry (raise the holders physical attack by 50% when it's low on HP). Giovanni used this Rhyperior in the Kanto leaders tournament. Its moveset is:
    • Hammer Arm: A strong Fighting-type attack that lowers the user's speed.
    • Stone Edge: A very strong physical Rock-type attack that has a bigger chance make a critical hit. It has a 1 in 5 chance miss.
    • Megahorn: A very strong physical Bug-type attack.
