Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime/manga series written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa. It is the story of the Elric Brothers, two boys who wish to restore their bodies to normal after a failed attempt at resurrecting their dead mother through alchemy.

Series Dictionary[]

  • Alchemy: The concept of manipulating and altering matter, which is done by breaking down an object to its basic molecules and reforming it as something else. However, the final object has to have the same molecules and ingredients as the original object.
  • Alkahestry: A slightly-different version of alchemy used by the eastern land of Xing.
  • Amestris: The country Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in for the most part.
  • Automail: Prosthetic metal limbs built to replace lost appendages.
  • Chimera: A creature created by the fusion of two different living things. While they usually appear as combinations of two different animals, there are human chimera that resemble perfectly normal humans, but can change into a humanoid animal form for combat.
  • Dragon's Pulse: A flow of life energy that travels through the earth. It is one of the basic principles of Alkahestry.
  • Homunculus: An artificial human created through alchemy.
  • Philosopher's Stone: A stone created from human souls, which allows someone to bypass the rules of alchemy, effectively letting them create anything they desire as long as the stone has power.
  • State Alchemist: An alchemist who's been employed by the Amestrian military.
  • The Gate: The entrance to God's domain. Alchemists who attempt to transmute human bodies will often end up getting a small glance inside the Gate, letting them use alchemy without Transmutation Circles. However, those who look inside the Gate must give up one of their body parts as penance.
  • Truth: The God of the Fullmetal Alchemist universe, which oversees every transmutation performed by alchemists. Seeing Human Transmutation as an unfair exchange, it will reveal itself to alchemists who attempt it and take away their most valued attribute as penance for trying it.
  • Transmutation Circles: Symbols and runes drawn by alchemists to perform transmutations. Those who have managed to look inside the Gate no longer have to draw these circles to perform alchemy.
  • Xing: An eastern country located on the other side of a desert, where they practice Alkahestry instead of alchemy.
