Background[]
Mihawk became famous even before the beginning of the Great Age of Pirates 24 years ago. He challenged increasingly powerful opponents until no one could challenge him, thus earning the title "World's Strongest Swordsman". Mihawk once saw a strong rival in Shanks. Mihawk often sought out Shanks for duels. After Shanks lost his arm 12 years ago, Mihawk stopped looking for him for duels. Later, Mihawk was responsible for single-handedly destroying Don Krieg's entire fleet, excluding Krieg's flagship, during Krieg's failed attempt to enter and conquer the Grand Line.
When the Krieg Pirates docked their flagship on the Baratie, Mihawk soon caught them and cut their main ship into three pieces, which ended up drawing Zoro's attention, who challenged him to a duel. Mihawk didn't think much about Zoro and said he could show the difference in strength between them without crossing blades, where, after the pirate hunter's insistence, Mihawk pulled a Kogatana to duel with Zoro. Zoro and Mihawk began to duel, where, the best swordsman in the world without any difficulties, pierced Zoro's chest, but he was surprised that he didn't even take a step back. Mihawk asked why Zoro didn't step back, and Zoro replied that he wanted to fulfill an oath he had taken, and wanted to die otherwise. Out of respect for Zoro's passion, Mihawk decided to end the battle with Yoru. Zoro attacked Mihawk and performed his strongest attack, and Mihawk responded by breaking two of his swords and slicing him in the chest. Zoro turned to face Mihawk's next blow, impressing Mihawk, stating that a back wound is a swordsman's shame, and Mihawk ended the duel by slashing him diagonally across the chest, holding on just enough to allow Zoro live. After Zoro's defeat, Don Krieg went to confront Mihawk, but he just ignored Krieg and left. After Luffy received his first reward, Mihawk came to the island of Shanks to tell him about it.
When Portgas D. Ace's execution began, Mihawk stood alongside Bartholomew Kuma, Donquixote Doflamingo, Gecko Moria, and Boa Hancock, ready for the battle ahead. When Aokiji froze the two tsunamis that Whitebeard had caused, Mihawk was one of the first warlords to attack, wanting to measure his strength against Whitebeard. He unleashed what was called "the strongest cut in the world", but his attack was stopped by Jozu. Luffy ended up getting in Mihaw's path and had managed to get away from Mihawk, but the swordsman could continue the fight, however, he was suddenly greeted by the Vista of the Whitebeard Pirates, and when he looked at Luffy, he reflected that the Straw Hat's ability to gain allies was its most dangerous force. When Shanks arrived on the battlefield after Whitebeard's death, Mihawk refused to fight Shanks and said the deal was only to face the Whitebeard pirates and thus withdrew from the war.
Mihawk returned to his home on Kuraigana Island, where he found Zoro and Perona, who had arrived on the island in his absence. After demonstrating his potential, Zoro managed to convince Mihawk to train the same for the next two years. When Zoro left his island, Mihawk was left with Perona just watching the news happening in the world. After the World Government voted to dissolve the Shichibukai, Mihawk found himself under siege by a Navy fleet, and he was excited to become a wanted criminal again.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Haki
- Busōshoku "Armament Haki": It is the ability to cover the body or weapons it wears in invisible armor to increase defense and also affect users of Akuam no Mi Logia. Mihawk's full level of application with this type of Haki is unknown, but he must be at least proficient due to the fact that he holds the title of best swordsman in the world, as well as having taught to Zoro.
- Kenbunshoku "Observation Haki": It is the ability to predict or even locate enemy presences. Mihawk's application with this type of haki is advanced, having taught Roronoa Zoro how to use it and showing vast knowledge in its application.
- Kokuto Kogetsu: Mihawk swings are capable of generating compressed air blades that cut across the landscape even if the target dodges, unbalancing them.
- Kokuto Saku: Mihawk lures his opponent by holding Yoru with both hands behind his back. If your opponent approaches, he meets your attack with a downward swipe in hopes of slicing his arms.
- Kokuto Issen: Mihawk shakes Yoru once, separating everything in his path. This technique is powerful enough to accidentally break Aokiji's iceberg after losing Luffy.
- Kokuto Arahoshi:Mihawk leaps into the air while holding his sword in a downward position, coming down to impale his target with great force.
- Chu wo Hau Zangeki:Mihawk swings Yoru down, causing a wave of compressed air to crawl across the ground towards his target in order to split him in half. This attack decreases the size of Whitebeard's Moby Dick, forcing Jozu to repel it with her own body.
Equipment[]
- Yoru: It's name lit. meaning "Night", the Black Blade is a oversized kriegsmesser. The blade is angled with "Chouji" wire with irregular double pattern. Its monumental size and dark blade and long studded hilt give it the appearance of a cross. It is featured in the series, being shown splitting a huge galleon ship in half, and previously being noted as sinking an entire fleet of ships. It is also has a permament coating of Armament Haki that is what made it a Black Blade, thus rendering it to be nigh-invulnerable to damage.
- Kogatana: The Kogatana is one of Dracule Mihawk's weapons. It is a cross-shaped knife pendant that is worn around your neck.
