I will be the most powerful Jedi ever.
~ Anakin Skywalker

Background[]

Anakin Skywalker's life was once that of a child slave on the harsh desert planet of Tatooine, before the Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn discovered him and determined that Anakin was the chosen one due to being conceived by the medichlorians. Under the training of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin became more in tune with the Force, and rose among the Jedi ranks. But as he grew older, he only felt more and more imperfect. With the tipping point being a dream about his wife dying at birth, Anakin turned to the dark side of the Force to fix himself, which resulted in him falling into lava during a battle against Obi-Wan. Even though he was severely damaged, the Emperor rescued him and supported him with new armor, turning him into Darth Vader. Years later, after discovering his son, Vader had a change of heart, and sacrificed himself to save him from the Emperor and the Dark Side. After life, Anakin would spend his afterlife as a spirit of the Force, guiding the next generations of Skywalkers to come.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • The Force: Anakin is very much in tune with the Force, being the chosen one and having the potential to be the strongest bearer of the Force in history.
    • Force Valor: Vader could use various different techniques to enhance his speed, reflexes, and strength.
    • Telekinesis: Vader's preferred Force ability, his powers allow him to easily move objects with his mind and the wave of a hand.
      • Force Push: Vader utilized Force Push to Force Push to send his opponents flying through the air, causing them serious injury or temporarily incapacitating them/knocked them unconscious. In the Lords of the Sith novel, Vader's was strong enough to send a large telekinetic pulse capable of ripping apart several Lyleks simultaneously, despite the fact that the creatures' carapaces were impervious to even heavy blaster fire.
        • Force Destruction: A lethal Force Push where Vader creates powerful energy wave that vaporizes or tears anything caught in its wake.
      • Force Wave: Vader utilized Force Wave to unleash a wave of pure force-energy that knocked back and repelled anything within the power's blast radius or push multiple opponents simultaneously. He unleashed a telekinetic tremor that destroyed the medical chamber where he was first encased with his armor, while multiple objects, and droids were simultaneously crushed, and Palpatine was blasted against a wall.
      • Force Repulse: Vader utilized Force Repulse to generate a telekinetic explosion that would blast away anything within the power's blast radius, allowing it to repel opponents and destroy obstacles.
      • Force Pull: Vader utilized Force Pull to pull his opponents or objects towards him.
      • Force Flight: Vader utilized Force Flight to levitate himself or to slow-down his fall to the ground.
      • Force Choke: Vader utilized Force Choke to constrict the organs of living organisms in order to suffocate or strangle them, which he could use to either incapacitate or kill. He could also do this from a great distance simply by knowing the targets location relative to himself, as he choked Admiral Ozzel from several kilometers away on another ship while looking at him through a view screen. This is also one of his favorite moves.
      • Force Grip: Vader utilized Force Grip to lift his opponents off the ground and into the air, sometimes by the neck, to immobilize them. His abilities also allowed him to influence the movements of individuals, as demonstrated when he forced Ezra Bridger to raise his lightsaber towards his own neck while also pinning him against a wall. Additionally, he was able to freeze two Inquisitors in place before forcing them to activate their lightsabers, and fatally stab the other, all as punishment for their romantic entanglements with each other.
      • Force Stasis: Vader utilized Force Stasis to slow down or completely halt the motion of a target, holding them in place with a paralyzing grip. In Darth Vader 4: Vader, Part II, he managed to momentarily freeze the explosion generated by a grenade thrown at him by clone troopers, which, while straining, allowed him time to get out of its blast radius safely before he released it.
      • Force Crush: Vader utilized Force Crush to crush objects or droids.
      • Force Wound:
      • Force Throw: Vader utilized Force Throw to cause objects and even individuals, to be hurled toward a target at an astounding velocity; Vader used this ability in his second confrontation against his son Luke Skywalker.
      • Force Jump: As the name suggests, Vader is capable of telekinetically lifting himself up to jump to greater heights.
      • Saber Throw: Vader utilized Saber Throw to telekinetically guide his lightsaber towards his opponent; similar to a boomerang or shuriken, where it spins like a buzz saw and chops up its victims before returning to the Dark Lord's hand.
      • Force Barrier: To protect himself from attacks, physical or telekinetic, Vader can create barriers and bubbles with the Force.
      • Force Maelstrom: Arguably Anakin's strongest Force ability, he creates a nigh-impenetrable bubble-shaped barrier, then he picks up all loose objects in the area and swirls them around in a storm of telekinesis, bombarding people with the debris as they fly around helplessly in the air.
    • Telepathy: Vader is capable of telepathically communicating with people and see victim's thoughts across the galaxy.
      • Drain Knowledge: Vader can use telepathy to look into the minds of others and pull out the information he needs. If he so chose, Vader could wipe certain memories from the minds of the victim.
        • Dun Möch: Another of Anakin's favorite abilities, he probes the minds of his opponents in battle to find their weaknesses and insecurities, then uses taunts and insults to break their concentration and install doubt/fear into his opponents.
      • Force Persuasion: Commonly known as the "Jedi Mind Trick," Anakin can use the Force to convince others to complete tasks they normally wouldn't. Most people can fall to its influence, but strong willed or practiced Force users can resist its effects.
      • Force Concealment: When the time for stealth arises, Vader can choose to hide his presence from all but the strongest Jedi and Sith.
    • Immovability:
    • Force Amplification:
    • Force Scream:
    • Force Channeling:
    • Force Heal: If he ever gets injured in battle, Vader can use the Force to heal minor wounds.
    • Force Illusion:
    • Force Corruption:
    • Force Rage: By reaching deep into his mind, Vader can draw on his fear, anger, and/or hate to become more powerful.
    • Force Sense: Vader can use the Force to sense major events in the galaxy ("great disturbances") or the presence of life forms nearby.
    • Force Precognition: By meditating and concentrating on the Force, Vader can see briefly into the future, essentially gaining a form of danger sense.
    • Tutaminis: Via focusing the Force in his palm, Vader is capable of absorbing and redirecting energy-based attacks, such as a Blaster Bolt.
    • Kinetite: Because Vader's suit makes the use of Force Lightning incredibly dangerous, Vader can shoot balls of pure kinetic energy as an alternative.
    • Force Cloak: Vader can render himself invisible to all but the strongest Jedi and Sith.
    • Sith Alchemy: Being a Sith Lord, Vader has been taught in the ways of ancient Sith Alchemy.
      • Transmutation: Vader has transformed a man into a terrible monster with alchemy.
    • Sleep Inducement:
    • Mind Control:
    • Beast Control:
    • Sith Spirit:
    • Force Spirit/Ghost: Upon death, Anakin has the ability to become one with the Force and manifest himself to communicate with the living. This state is temporary, only lasting a couple of years before he permanently fades off into the Force.
  • Cyborg Physiology/Cybernetic Body: As a cyborg, Vader was physically stronger than most other sentient beings, enough that he can hold the pressure of several tons to effortlessly lift the weight of a grown man or crush bone with his fist. His cybernetic enhancements also allow him additional strength to overpower other individuals with far greater ease. Vader uses this to his advantage in lightsaber combat; he uses his immense strength to easily subdue, restrain and overpower his opponents. With his cybernetic legs, he can leap great long distances. Despite his great strength, physically lighter opponents can still block him in a lightsaber duel, such as Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano, and even his son, Luke Skywalker. His cybernetic enhancements are enough to allow him to even stand against the might of a Wookiee and Trandoshan. Even with a missing hand, Vader was able to lift Palpatine with no strain and take on his Force Lightning.
  • Advanced Strength: Vader utilizes his Force powers to amplify his physical strength, making him physically stronger than most, if not all other sentient beings. His cybernetic enhancements also allow him additional strength to overpower other individuals with far greater ease.
  • Advanced Durability: Vader utilizes his Force powers to amplify his physical durability, making him physically immune than most, if not all damage. His cybernetic enhancements also allow him additional protection due to the durasteel alloy and Mandalorian iron-infused fabric, the armor is capable of withstanding plenty of punishment like tanked blaster bolts, point-blank explosions, fire, and even hits from lightsabers and left the battle with only minor scratches. Because of the constant pain killers fed by the suit as well as having his nerves' senses of touch dulled, Anakin can withstand monstrous levels of pain and keep fighting.
  • Master Lightsaber Duelist: Anakin is a highly skilled lightsaber duelist, with skills being rivaled by his son Luke Skywalker. Anakin utilizes his Force powers to amplify his physical speed and agility to make his lightsaber combat skills more lethal in combat, making him a formidable opponent in single combat. According to Kanan Jarrus, Anakin is the best lightsaber duelist in the entire Jedi Order. According to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin's lightsaber combat skills are superior to even that of Yoda and Sheev Palpatine's. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's lightsaber skills improved to the point of mastery in all 7 forms. He is one of the best sword fighters in fiction, utilizing all 7 styles under a hybrid focusing Form V's duelling variant, Djem So. Djem So is a strength-based form that focuses on holding one's ground while defending against attacks followed by powerful counterattacks, and Vader is arguably the greatest Djem So specialist of all time.
    • Form I: Shii-Cho: Like every Jedi, Anakin/Vader is highly skilled in Shii-Cho, the basic form of lightsaber combat. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Shii-Cho greatly improved to the point of mastery.
    • Form II: Makashi: After becoming a cyborg, Vader studied Makashi and became a master of the style. Taking advantage of his cybernetically augmented strength, Vader often incorporated many elements of Makashi into his personalized Djem So variant to overcome Makashi's prime weakness.
    • Form III: Soresu: After becoming a cyborg, Vader studied Soresu and became a master of the style. Vader became so skilled at it that he was able to overcome and best Obi-Wan Kenobi in their final confrontation, despite Obi-Wan being a master of the style in his own right.
    • Form IV: Ataru: Anakin/Vader is highly skilled in Ataru and studied Ataru as a Padawan. He would later use those same traits to become a true master of Form V. He first used this against Dooku on Geonosis when wielding two lightsabers. At some point during the Clone Wars, he made some adjustments to Ataru to make it far more effective in defending against incoming projectiles or range attackers. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Ataru greatly improved to the point of mastery. He trained even to best Yoda, the leader of the Jedi Order, in the case they ever faced each other directly in a duel.
    • Form V: Shien/Djem So: Anakin/Vader is a master of Shien/Djem So, considered by many to be the most proficient practitioner of the style. After losing one of the borrowed lightsabers, Anakin had to switch to Form V. During his final match against Dooku aboard the Separatist flagship ''Invisible Hand'', Skywalker deceived the Sith with a Shien opening stance and Ataru acrobatics, but during the duel he returned to his own preferred Djem So strokes. The Sith Lord was barely able to deflect the Jedi Knight’s blows and was eventually scorched when his own blade was forced back onto his shoulder. Using Form V, Skywalker pushed Dooku back with powerful blows, bolstered by use of rage in the fight, until he eventually disarmed and killed the Sith. After becoming a cyborg, he created a personal variant that included elements of all seven forms of lightsaber combat.
    • Form VI: Niman: Anakin/Vader is highly skilled in Niman. Anakin would occasionally applied Ataru-styled acrobatics and also incorporated Force attacks using his Form VI/Niman training during combat, but he preferred to rely on pure Djem So during lightsaber duels. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Niman greatly improved to the point of mastery. His mastery in Form VI is implied to be greater than Maul’s, a master of this style in his own right.
    • Form VII: Juyo/Vaapad: After becoming a cyborg, Vader studied Juyo/Vaapad and became a master of the style.
    • Jar'Kai: Anakin/Vader is highly skilled in Jar'Kai. Initially, Anakin only has some skills in Jar'Kai but was able to use it against Count Dooku in their first duel. However, as of "The Wrong Jedi", Anakin's skills in Jar'Kai have greatly improved to the point that he was able to defeat the recently turned Dark Jedi, Barriss Offee, relatively easily, becoming more proficient in the style. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Jar'Kai greatly improved to the point of mastery.
  • Master Pilot: Even before Vader's fall to the dark side, he was praised as the most skilled star-pilot in the history of the galaxy, a reputation he lived up to when he single-handedly almost destroyed Phoenix Squadron in his TIE Advanced, easily out-flying their entire fleet and forcing their command to abandon ship. Vader's piloting skills were rivaled only by his son, Luke Skywalker.
  • Expert Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Vader is an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant, although he normally uses his brute strength against others, allowing him to defeat others with less of a need for skill.
  • Expert Marksman: Although rarely seen, Vader is highly skilled in the use of blaster pistols.
  • Master Engineer: Even before Vader's fall to the dark side, he is amazingly skilled in engineering, he can personally repair starships to maintain his skill. Repairing such machinery and vehicles also act as a form of meditation for Vader, allowing him to focus and clear his mind.
  • Genius-Level Intellect/Master Tactician/Leader: Even before Vader's fall to the dark side, he was amazingly intelligent and wise. As the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Military and a member of the Imperial High Command, Vader is a highly skilled tactician and a very capable leader. Due to his experience from the Clone Wars, he has an excellent reputation of never being defeated, he can also use his opponents own tactics against them. Furthermore, Vader often uses his environment to his advantage, using the terrain against his opponents by using whatever is at his disposal, such as throwing shrapnel and wreckage at his foes. In Vader Down, he used shrapnel and wreckage from his own TIE Advanced to decimate his enemies on Vrogas Vas in conjunction with his Force skills and his lightsaber.
  • Intimidation: As an immensely powerful Force-user, Vader commends an intimidating presence to the point where many of his allies and enemies alike across the galaxy fear him, even exceptionally powerful Force-users, turning Vader in one of the most, if not the most feared Sith in the entire galaxy.
  • Multilingual: Mostly due to Vader's interactions as Anakin Skywalker, he is capable of fluently speaking Basic, Huttese, Bith, and Sith tongue.

Weapons & Equipment[]

  • Dual-Phase Lightsaber: Lightsabers are the main weapons of Jedis and Sith Lords. They are beam swords that are capable of cutting through even the strongest metals like butter. Vader's is a dual-phase lightsaber, allowing him to instantly change its length in battle with the flick of a switch. the length the switch can change between are adjustable, and Vader has his set two blade lengths at ≈1 meter and ≈1.5 meters respectively.
  • Armor: Darth Vader's armor, serial number: E-3778Q-1, doubles as a life support system, keeping him alive after his incident on Mustafar.
    • Enhanced Force Connection: To compensate for Vader's devastated tissues disrupting his connection to the Force and thus weakening his abilities, the armor is alchemically enchanted to increase the flow of the Force through Vader's body, thus making his abilities stronger overall.
    • Multi-Alloy Composition: Being primarily made of durasteel alloy, with obsidian material and Mandalorian iron-infused fabric, the armor is capable of withstanding plenty of punishment. It has effortlessly tanked blaster bolts, point-blank explosions, fire, and even hits from lightsabers and left the battle with only minor scratches.
      • Immense Pain Tolerance: Due to being on constant pain killers fed by the suit as well as having his nerves' senses of touch dulled, Anakin can withstand monstrous levels of pain and keep fighting.
    • Enhanced Strength: Through a combination of his robotic prosthetic and Sith alchemical enhancements to his armor, Vader's wields superhuman strength without use of the Force.
      • Enhanced Jump: His cybernetic legs are capable of sending him dozens of feet into the air without any use of Force Jump.
    • Enhanced Stamina: Via the Sith alchemy used to enhance the suit, Vader can fight for extended periods of time without rest.
    • Temperature Control Unit: His armor is equipped with a sensitive temperature regulation, which allows him to withstand extreme temperatures like the frigid ices of Hoth or the raging fires of Mustafar.
    • Enhanced Vision: The armor's eyepieces are capable of seeing in near infrared and ultraviolet, providing Vader with the ability to see in the dark.
    • Magnetic Boots: Vader's boots contain ferromagnetic cores that can generate a strong magnetic field as the Sith Lord desires, allowing him to stick to metallic surfaces like a starship hull.
  • TIE Advanced x1:
    • Reinforced Durasteel armor:
    • P-s5.6 Twin Ion Engines:
      • Class 4.0 Hyperdrive:
    • Deflector Shield Generator:
    • CRX-9 Targeting Computer:
    • Dual L-S9.3 Laser Cannons:
    • Cluster Missile Launcher:

    • Revan defeated Darth Malak, who had absorbed the force energies that were refueling the Star Forge (1.376 exatons of TNT).
    • While barely alive from poison, Darth Bane’s dark power was stated to be “like nothing [Darth Cognus] had seen or felt before”, despite witnessing the Devastation of Ambria not long prior. This event destroyed the landscape of the small planet Ambria and was the most powerful use of the Dark Side by that point.
      • Note: Some of us disagree with this feat, as Bane was still injured by the same source of power.
    • Frequently stated to be the strongest Jedi of his generation, and immensely more powerful than Jedi Council members during the Clone Wars. Yarael Poof, a deceased member, stopped a bomb that was going to destroy Coruscant (47.37 - 82.42 zettatons of TNT) (More in Q&A).

  • Became a Jedi Master
  • Kar Vastor, a Force sensitive human comparable to Mace Windu, is compared to a young Anakin Skywalker. Nick Rostu later states that Vader’s power in the Force exceeds Kar in every regard.

Faults[]

  • Armor: As much as Vader's armor protects him, it also hinders him. Parts of his armor were mismatched, snagging on his body, and his raspy breathing has kept him up at night. Because of this, he had to compensate for the armor in order to keep himself alive, making his fighting style slower and more predictable.
    • Hindered Mobility: Because of the awkward weight balancing of the armor, Vader is slower than he used to be as Anakin, though rigorous training has made this decrease marginal.
    • Force Lightning: Palpatine had configured Vader's suit to be extremely vulnerable to Force lightning to ensure that he could easily kill Vader if he tried to defy him. While Vader can endure Force lightning, his armor also makes him vulnerable to Sith/Force Lightning, and it will freeze up his suit and damage his life support systems grievously.
    • Armor Dependency: Because Vader is barely hanging on to the edge of life, he requires his armor to live, and will die if it stops working. However, Vader can channel his rage to survive without it for several hours, but even then the solution is temporary and Vader will still die without treatment.
  • Force-less Beings: Vader is at a disadvantage against anyone who is cut off from the Force, as they will be impervious to most of his Force abilities, including Force Sense.

Fun Facts[]

  • Interestingly enough, Vader hates sand.
  • Because Anakin had the potential to be twice as strong as Sidious but ended up being 60% his strength due to his injuries instead, Vader's power is officially 40% what it could have been if he had never lost at Mustafar.
  • Darth Vader has actually become such an icon in pop culture that his face has been carved onto Washington D.C.'s National Cathedral.
  • Throughout his lifetime, Vader has lost his right arm a total of 7 times, 2 of which happened in the movies.
  • Of all the Star Wars products that have ever been sold, the ones themed after Darth Vader are the best selling, even out matching the other iconic characters of the franchise.
  • Vader is known for his iconic helmet, but this did not feature in the early designs. George Lucas originally imagined the character as wearing a black silk scarf over his face. Ralph McQuarrie, who drew concept art for many of the beloved characters, designed the helmet as an alternative, imagining that Vader would wear the helmet when moving between ships, sort of like an astronaut suit. Eventually, it was decided that the character would wear the helmet all the time. A variety of inspirations contributed to how the helmet was designed. Lucas suggested a samurai influence in the shape of the back of the helmet. Costume designer John Mollo also took inspiration from Nazi uniforms.
  • It's hard to imagine now, but the fact that Vader was Luke Skywalker's father was a big secret that the filmmakers went to great lengths to protect from getting leaked. According to Mark Hamill, only George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, and himself knew when they were filming, in addition to James Earl Jones, who would later speak the famous lines. Hamill claimed that he needed to know so that his reaction would be believable, but was warned by Kershner that if he told anyone, including his co-stars Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, they would know that it was him who leaked the story. On set, David Prowse had been instructed to say "Obi-Wan killed your father," so a majority of the technicians, actors and crew members did not know the truth until the film debuted.
  • In the earlier script of The Empire Strikes Back that was written by Leigh Brackett, Darth Vader and Anakin were supposedly separate entities: Darth Vader was Anakin's murderer and when Luke confronted Vader, Anakin's spirit would guide him in their battle. George Lucas was disappointed with this as this likely wouldn't improve the saga, though unfortunately, Leigh had died before they could discuss this.
