The ultimate evil requires that everyone alive, everywhere in the universe, should bend to its whim. That is my aim.
~ Darkseid

The skies will rain fire, the oceans will boil, the streets will run red with the blood of billions. Only then, after your last pitiful hope is extinguished, will I end your life.
~ Darkseid to Superman

I. Am. The. New. God. All is one in Darkseid. This mighty body is my church. When I command your surrender, I speak with three billion voices. When I make a fist to crush your resistance. It is with three billion hands. When I stare into your eyes and shatter your dreams. And break your heart. It is with six billion eyes. Nothing like Darkseid has ever come among you; nothing will again. I will take you to a hell without exit or end. And there I will murder your souls! And make you crawl and beg! And die! Die! DIE FOR DARKSEID!
~ Darkseid

I have turned one hundred thousand worlds to dust looking for Anti-Life. Looking for those who robbed me of my glory. I will stride across their bones and bask in the glow of Anti-Life. And all of existence shall be mine.
~ Darkseid in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Darkseid is an antagonist from DC Comics, making his first appearance in Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134 (December 1970). He is the ruler of the planet Apokolips and is intent on conquering the universe and eliminating free will of the universe.

Background

Main Origin:

Ten billion years ago, the Old Gods clashed in a cosmic civil war called Ragnarok, in which the battle was so great that the result tore the gods asunder and birthed the New Gods, who lived in the Fourth World, a separate dimension from the DC Universe. Half of the New Gods lived on a beautiful planet called New Genesis, while the other half of the New Gods lived on a giant fireball called Apokolips, in which the New Gods of Apokolips command an army of Parademons. Among the damned souls known as the New Gods of Apokolips was Prince Uxas, second in line to the throne behind his brother, Drax, not Dave Bautista Drax, but DC Drax. To rule Apokolips, Drax was to enter the Omega Pit and absorb the Omega Effect, a cataclysmic entropy bound within Apokolips. But Uxas actually tricked Drax into getting killed by the Omega Effect, in which Uxas then absorbed the Omega Effect for himself. And then, when Uxas emerged from the Omega Pit, he was now known as the manifestation of tyranny: Darkseid.

First New 52 Origin:

Uxas was once an Old God as he is given the name Darkseid since he was sadistic, cunning and evil. Wanting greater power, he told lies that made the Old Gods distrust each other and corrupted them inside only because Uxas wanted greater power. However, the lies Uxas told were causing the Old Gods to war with each other. This was when Uxas decided to play a very big gamble. When the Old Gods died, Uxas gain their god-like power, but Uxas' father, Yuga, didn't approve of his greed and decided to kill him along with Izaya for their actions.

Yuga Khan then used Anti-life equation to revive the gods that were slayed by Darkseid. Yuga then met a violent end, leaving Darkseid to take over and end all existence before creating a planet known as Apokolips, soon after that he found a worthy opponent in Superman to fight against.

Powers & Abilities

  • New God Physiology: As a New God, Darkseid exists outside of normal time and space. The New Gods have evolved into beings of genetic stability and evolutionary perfection, due to taking up the powers of other gods and their close proximity to the Source. Darkseid's "True Form" or "Godhead" (which is the Multiversal Entity of pure evil that all versions and forms of Darkseid embody) however, was fragmented into a lesser form after Final Crisis, until he eventually reconstituted into his "True Form", which consisted of all of Darkseid's lesser forms, making all of his past aspects become one. In this True Form, Darkseid states his power exceeds what it was before the first Crisis.
    • High Intelligence: With his incredible intellect, he is responsible for the Source to lose sanity and even outsmart him who is considered omniscient. He is also an incredible strategist and planner that sets in motion for thousands of years in advance. He is also smart enough to have the entire people on Earth to go against the heroes without even setting on foot on it.
    • Superhuman Speed: Darkseid is able to move at speeds far greater than any human. Even when not at full power, Darkseid was still fast enough to match Zeus' combat speed. During this fight, Wonder Woman stated she had never seen a battle happen at the speed they were fighting at. Despite this ability rarely displayed, Darkseid can react and maneuver faster than the healthiest and strongest human athlete who partakes in daily exercise. However, Darkseid cannot run or move nearly as fast as speedsters like Superman or the Flash. In some cases, however, he would often surprise Superman by appearing right behind him.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Darkseid fought against Highfather Izaya for seven days straight, showing only minor signs of fatigue.
    • Superhuman Strength: Darkseid possesses colossal super-strength. His full strength potential varies depending on the incarnation but overall, because he is a high-tier cosmic being, Darkseid can easily overpower and kill humans and most galactic beings, he can bend and break through virtually any man-made material, can lift extremely heavy objects, and decimate full-sized buildings and other structures with his might. He possesses enough strength to match beings such as Superman and Wonder Woman in combat. Depending on the incarnation, he could overpower Superman with nothing but brute strength, or vice versa. As a god of Apokolips, he is able to break even the strongest of metals, once breaking a Green Lantern Ring with his bare hands.
    • Immortality: As a god of Apokolips, Darkseid can live almost indefinitely, as he cannot age, wither, or degrade. However, though it is nearly impossible for him to die, other high-tier beings like Kryptonians or the Spectre could kill him.
    • Nigh-Invulnerability: Darkseid is extremely resistant to most forms of physical and mental harm. Darkseid's full durability capacity varies depending on the incarnation. Overall, because he is a high-tier cosmic being, humans could not even begin to harm him, bullets bounce off him, rockets, bombs and lasers will not even leave a mark on him, and high-voltage energy emissions cannot penetrate through him. He is completely immune to all earthly diseases and viruses. Despite his resistance, other high-tier cosmic beings like Superman or the Martian Manhunter can cause him great distress and pain. Also, materials forged from his home world can hurt him as well.
      • Energy Resistance: Darkseid is highly resistant to most energy based attacks. Even while in a weakened state, he was unfazed by both Cyborg's arm cannon and Azrael's flaming Murasame sword.
    • Regeneration: Darkseid was able to regenerate his eyesight after both his eyes were impaled by Wonder Woman and Aquaman.
  • Omega Effect: Darkseid wields a cosmic energy field called the "Omega Effect," which proves integral, as it is the core from which his other abilities manifest from. This effect allows him to transverse through time and space, also enabling him to break barriers and force-fields.
    • Omega Beams: Darkseid's main power. He focuses this power as a form of energy that he fires from his eyes. This effect is not only a relentless attack, but it is capable of teleporting the target to any location Darkseid chooses and recall them later or erase the target from the universe and similarly reform them. Darkseid has pinpoint control over his Omega Beams, and his unerring aim allows it to travel in straight lines or bend, twist or curve around corners. It has been shown that the Omega Beams are ineffective against the bracelets of Wonder Woman, as they were created from the Olympian Aegis. He has claimed that no being had yet withstood the full force of the Omega Beam, but Yuga Khan, Doomsday and Superman nonetheless survived the attack.
      • Molecular Dispersion: He is also able to dissipate and disperse the molecules of an object or organism, effectively erasing them from existence.
      • Disintegration
    • Cosmic Awareness: Darkseid can perceive and understand the workings of the universe on a cosmic level. He is able to perceive others even in different dimensions. Darkseid can use the Omega Effect to manipulate and transverse through time at will. He has also used his Omega Beams to send people back through time.
    • Darkness Manipulation: In his True Form, Darkseid is able to generate and manipulate a powerful dark energy that was capable of seemingly killing the entire Quintessence.
    • Dimensional Travel: Darkseid's Omega Effect allows him to transverse through time and space at will, allowing him to cross between dimensions.
      • Boomtubes Projection: Darkseid is able to create and project Boomtubes at will, either for his own use or to send others to desired destinations without requiring the use of a Mother Box.
    • Erosion Blasts: Darkseid is able to project energy from his hands as well as his eyes. To this effect the blasts can sustain damages from eradication to withering in effect, using both aspects to a devastating degree.
    • Flight: Darkseid is capable of levitating and flying at will.
    • Gravity Manipulation: When Darkseid reached between universes, his hand created an immense gravitational pull that twisted time and space in his surrounding area.
      • Chronokinesis: Darkseid can use the Omega Effect to manipulate and transverse through time at will. He has also used his Omega Beams to send people back through time. Darkseid's gravitational pull was so strong that it warped time itself in the surrounding area. When John Constantine was trapped within it, he stated he lived days between each second from his perception.
    • Power Distribution: Darkseid could endow his lesser subjects with enormous powers, either granting them new abilities, increasing old ones they already possess or restoring lost powers to others at higher levels. He has done so with Mantis, Dr. Bedlam, Mary Marvel and his son; Kalibak.
      • Power Absorption: Darkseid can absorb the life-force of Old Gods to regain strength. He was able to absorb the power of Zeus in order to get back to full strength. He was also able to feed on the energy of Zeus' children to regain power.
    • Molecular Reconstruction: Darkseid can transmute and manipulate matter, and in extension atoms, at will; he can destroy humans with a mere thought, and as such, he can even create his own creature complexions by design out of nothing, as he did when he created the being known as Strayne. Also, Darkseid can cause organisms to degrade and de-evolve.
    • Necromancy: Darkseid is able to manipulate the dead and the souls of others in various ways. He was able to pull Martin Stein's essence out of the Firestorm Matrix, and was also capable of using his Omega Beams to trap Cyborg's soul into a sphere.
      • Resurrection: Darkseid can seemingly revitalize those who've been dead for some time as seen by his having been able to resurrect a long since deceased Steppenwolf, last seen within his personal chambers.
    • Matter Manipulation: One of his stronger abilities, Darkseid can manipulate matter and in extension atoms. His matter manipulation is so strong with just a mere thought, he can destroy humans. He can create a  spaceship larger than New York with a mere fraction and De-Evolve organic beings. He can also successfully erase things from existence by dissipating objects. He can also manipulate the matrix.
    • Size Manipulation: Darkseid is able to manipulate his size in order to adapt to different situations. He can grow giant to combat larger opponents. His most impressive size changing feat is when his hands grew to almost be the size of a planet. He can also shrink his body in order to fight microscopic enemies such Ray Palmer.
    • Summoning: Darkseid has the unique ability to summon the Black Racer to aid him in battle. He also has complete control over the entity.
    • Telekinesis: Darkseid can mentally influence the movement of objects and people with his mind; he often makes things float with simple gestures of his hand.
    • Telepathy: Darkseid can easily read and access the minds of others. He can also attack or invade someone's mind with images.
      • Mind Control: Darkseid can control the actions, thoughts and speech of others, just by thinking it. In the scope of this ability, he can control and take over millions of individuals at once, indicating the capacity potential his brain can achieve.
      • Psionic Possession: Darkseid's psychic abilities allow him to possess an individual and negate any superhuman abilities they may have.
    • Teleportation: Darkseid can teleport himself and other beings anywhere in the entire Universe even through other dimensions at a mere thought.
    • Soul Manipulation: Can manipulate souls to the point where he put Cyborg Superman's soul into a sphere.
    • Time Travelling: Darkseid is able to travel through time as well as able to send people in different time periods if he wishes to. He can also send hid younger self to the present. He can travel through time periods like the year 1502.
    • Avatars Creation: A simple thought allows Darkseid to create liable avatars if when the need arises. These avatars are projected wherever Darkseid chooses, from the true location of his physical form. He has used this ability when it is necessary that his focus is divided, however it is something he prefers not to do, as the avatars are much weaker than Darkseid's true form.
    • Entity Creation:  Darkseid can create living entities like Brimstone, an entity who humbled Cosmic Boy, who can pull giant iron meteors and satellites down from space effortlessly, or Firestorm, who traded blows with Kaliback and even the Justice League, out of thin air. He can create an entity capable enough to match Takion who is Highfather's champion and create Omega Superman who easily defeated Dr. Fate.
    • Omega Sanction: His ultimate Omega power, Darkseid can cause people to live through multiple lifespans in an instant, forcing them to suffer as their lives become twisted and dark to the unfortunate target. Once under effect, they are completely cut out of the source and said to be impossible to escape.
  • Anti-life Equations: The Anti-Life Equation is the dark half of the source. It gives Darkseid the power to dominate the will of any sentient race having only fragments of it gives Darkseid to warp reality itself becoming twisted and distorting freedom. The Anti-Life Equation is strong enough to break down walls around the Source, can turn the forever people into homeless people, destroyed the Highfather and caused mass panic for the New Gods when cutting off the Source Wall with 1/6th of its power and at full power can force his will into every single sentient race in the universe as well as superheroes and super villains, as all is Darkseid and Darkseid is all.  However, it seems that beings of tremendous willpower, like Superman, are resistant to the Equation, since Darkseid only took over the Kryptonian's mind after the death of Lois Lane.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Darkseid is a highly-trained Apokoliptian warrior with literally thousands of years of experience. He has held his own against powerful opponents, such as Superman. His skills in battle are even capable of rivaling his son Orion. Despite his impressive fighting skills, however, Darkseid rarely resorts to personal combat to defeat his foes. Instead, he uses his servants to defeat his enemies for him. Apparently, Darkseid only fights opponents he deems worthy, such as Superman, Batman or Orion.
  • Intimidation: With his frightening visage and ruthless nature, Darkseid instills fear in friend and foe alike, something he no doubt enjoys.
  • Indomitable Will: Darkseid possesses an extraordinary control over his emotions, despite his reputation of anger and hatred towards all living things. His son Orion lacks such willpower.

Alternate Forms

Soul Fire

This form is powered by the souls of deceased gods. Darkseid is coated in fire and was gifted with the power of the Anti-life Entity. This makes Darkseid powerful enough to take on the Source on ground, as the source is the source of the existence of the entire DC Continuity which is basically written under DC Comics. He is able to keep up with the Source and match the combat of the Source.

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerability to Radion: Darkseid and all of the New Gods are vulnerable to a substance called Radion. Its source is unknown and its effects are toxic only in sustained amounts or after explosive exposure. The average New God can be slain by an application of Radion from a Radion blaster or bomb. More advanced beings such as Darkseid, protected by their power, armor and sheer toughness, have been known to take two hits and survive. Perhaps it requires the mysterious Element X to create it.
  • Dependency: Darkseid must have X-Element absorbed into his body for his Omega Effect to works. Without it, he relies on his other powers.
  • Phobia: Incredible as it may seem, Darkseid fears his father, Yuga Khan, more than anything else; Yuga Khan is the one being in the universe far more powerful and evil and was worse of a tyrant than even Darkseid. He is also much more brutal and cruel towards Darkseid than Darkseid himself is to his own children, Indeed, Darkseid would appeal even for Desaad to save him in his presence.
  • Cockiness
  • The Avatars he makes are kind useless when used for Scouting purposes and are much weaker than him.
  • Subway Employees
  • Beaten to near-death by Doomsday.
  • At his best, Superman is capable of defeating him, and has done so on multiple occasions.
  • Omega Beams have been proved ineffective against the following:
    • Superman
    • Doomsday
    • Wonder Woman's bracelets
    • Mxyzptlk
    • Yuga Khan
  • Though it is nearly impossible for him to die, other high-tier beings like Kryptonians or the Spectre could kill him.
  • Was once mugged by normal people.
  • Failed to defeat High Father; agreeing to a peace treaty instead of finishing the war.
  • Can be pushed into his own Boom Tubes; temporarily banishing him.
  • Seems to be vulnerable to a degree to mystical attacks and weaponry.

Fun Facts

  • He was created by the late Jack Kirby.
  • Darkseid is actually much more powerful than he appears, as his kind are stated to exist beyond the DC multiverse and are unaffected by retcons or similar: during Morrison's run on the comics the concept of a "true" Darkseid was explored, which suggests that every version of Darkseid we have seen so far is just a tiny fragment of a larger entity that has not been fully revealed (and quite possibly may never be revealed, due to its sheer scale).
  • Darkseid is mentioned in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League as an impending threat. He is implied to become the main antagonist of the DC Extended Universe. Going by storyboards for Zack Snyder's original vision for Justice League, Darkseid was originally meant to appear in the film but ended up being cut when Snyder stepped down during production for personal reasons, and the film was overhauled.
  • Darkseid is the inspiration for Thanos of Marvel Comics, as stated several times by Thanos' original creators. However, there are significant differences regarding the two in terms of goals. Although Thanos is interested in enslaving the universe like Darkseid, he is mostly motivated by his desire of being loved by Lady Death, and he was never intended to be a metaphor of tyranny like Darkseid.
    • Darkseid fought Thanos in an episode of ScrewAttack!'s popular internet series DEATH BATTLE and won.
  • Although Darkseid is known today as irredeemable evil, it wasn't always going to be the plan: back when Jack Kirby was plotting the ending of his New Gods saga, he actually intended for Darkseid to see the error of his ways and save Orion at the cost of his own life. However, after Kirby saw Darth Vader's heroic sacrifice in Return of the Jedi, he felt that the idea was too similar and nixed it.
